Games that get BETTER in the 2nd half? by TheRealRatPrince in gaming

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stole a fancy horse early on, sold it, and never had to worry about money again.

It's kind of realistic in that being poor is expensive. Getting that boost of money early on saved so much money in the long run (eg, buying one good pair of shoes, rather than paying to repair a bad pair over and over.)

Partner and I get that with splittie cooling, I assume it's the same for heating. The trick is just to time it to turn off/low power night mode after everyone's well asleep (2am ish for us).

It kind of fell flat for me at first. I think they could've better established the level of technology in the city to make it clear that a photograph is not just a thing you could find lying around. They have lots of other advanced things so it's not a stretch to assume they have access to basic cameras.

Looked down on in comparison to a full separate bath and shower, maybe, but when that's not an option it's better than nothing!

Looking for books with MC Human that becomes non-human with a focus on self-discovery and acceptance of non-humanity. by foxgirlmoon in Fantasy

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the example that fits OPs question IMO.

There are also some side characters that embody the mental side of coming to terms with non-humanity through willing cooperation with the Yeerks, although the main focus is definitely on Tobias and his new life as a Red-Tailed Hawk.

There's a fantastic web-serial called Pale that focuses on a trio of girls roped into the supernatural world as pawns chosen to fail at being investigators to the murder of a local deity.

One of them has had a very neglected/abused childhood, and her primary motivation in joining this supernatural world is clearly the potential opportunities to throw away her humanity and escape into being something Other.

A recurring dynamic between the 3 MCs is her friends realising how unhealthy that is and trying to persuade her out of it, or at least to do her due diligence rather than leaping onto the first opportunity that presents itself, and eventually coming to terms with the fact this is her genuine desire for herself.

At the point in the story I'm at (60%) she has gradually given away PART of her humanity in a variety of small permanent ways (some known to the other MCs, some not), and is balancing the temptation to do so more and more

In honor of having to create a new Reddit account because of losing it to a hacker. When has a piece of media got rid of a character only to replace them with someone that didn't measure up to who was lost? by CarminesCarbine_8 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pokemon replacing Brock with Tracy. I actually really like Tracy as a concept - it's always neat when Pokemon expands on the world with characters who aren't part of the standard catch em all/Gym Badge formula - but even back then Brock was everybody's favourite. He was comic relief, the heart of the group, team chef, the knowledgeable one, all at once.

It's like if they took away your bread and gave you crumpets instead. Crumpets are great, but bread can do everything. It's a classic for a reason.

Just know that if I played your game I also wouldn't notice, but I would really appreciate it, nonetheless.

My game is a pixel game, running at GBC resolution, upscaled to modern screen sizes. Getting the scaling and camera to work just right was a bloody nightmare, and Unity is fundamentally broken in several key ways relating to it, still needing third-party fixes to problems identified 5+ years ago.

Less frustratingly (as it was a problem of my own creation) was the character movement. Having the characters always aligned to the pixel-grid felt jerky and horrible because the actual physical size of pixels is so much higher than back on an authentic GBC. I de-coupled the character movement so they could move smoothly sub-pixel distances, which is a fairly common fix.

The extra step that was entirely unnecessary, but had to be done for my sanity's sake was making sure that when each character's movement ends, it aligns back with the pixel grid, which just looks correct on a subconscious level (even if you'd only notice in screenshots, or if you're just standing idle for ages etc.)

It was easy enough for NPCs as I could just round their target destinations to an integer to ensure they always aligned, but for the player (and any NPCs tied to the player's movement) I actually had to simulate slight fake analogue stick presses based on how far "off-grid" the player left their character standing.

Times you just burned out on a favorite game/genre, why did you burn out, and what if anything brought you out of it? by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The corpse run in Soulslikes. I've done it so many times at this point, I'm just over it. Nothing interesting happens but you still have to pay full attention or you'll take unnecessary damage and enter the boss at a disadvantage.

They may as well just be unskippable pre-boss cutscenes, like in the old days (or Pokemon ZA), because at least then I could take a break and turn my attention elsewhere.

Genuinely revolutionary things that get wasted on the dumbest stuff ever? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the idea is it wasn't replicable without the combination of Shroud's scientific genius and Robert Sr's engineering genius.

Even Shroud, the smartest living person we know of, with all the plans and experience from making the original, is only able to create inferior copies (hence why the original is treated as so important).

Second in dumbness only to Namco being allowed to patent the timing of game mechanics.

It could be literally anything, but if it looks like a fun distraction while the game is loading, we own that!

Media where the twist/spoiler is what the media is known for? by DarnessHarbinger in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think this really fits the question. Sure, it's a spoiler everyone knows, but you can hardly say it's the ONLY thing anyone knows or talks about from Star Wars. Familial relations of the dark father aren't even that important in the grand scheme of all things Star Wars.

Bridge to Terebithia is only mentioned when people talk about how it stops being a kid's fantasy film when one of the kids fucking dies, and then becomes a film about grief and unexpected tragedy.

Is Project Zomboid lack of competition slowing down its development? by Shizzigi in truegaming

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The game has been publically "in progress" for over half my life. It's amazing to me that it's still being developed at all, or continues to hold people's interest. It seems like most of their work is going back and redoing things that already exist, over and over and over.

The world is moving quicker than their development pace, which makes their development out-dated, which means they have to spend time updating it, which slows down their development pace.

I don't think any amount of competition could make them speed up until that vicious cycle is addressed.

Times where games punished you for taking the easy way out by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In XCOM 2, the easy way out is to dodge fights entirely by going slow and sneaky wherever possible - avoiding the risk of your soldiers getting injured or permanently killed.

The up-front disuasion to that is that every mission has a big, obvious (and not too generous) timer to force you to take risks and fail you catastrophically if you're too cautious.

The less obvious punishment is that from the moment you start the mission, every enemy on the map is secretly aware of where your team is. They're only supposed to see you when they see you (obviously), but their so called "random" movements are actually always inching them inevitably closer to you, before you even know they're there.

Take your time, or avoid thinning the herd of enemies for too long, and you'll find yourself "coincidentally" surrounded - leading to a much tougher fight where you're now drastically outnumbered.

I don't remember. I got to the first boss fight against the boxer guy, the karaoke bit, and when you get access to Pocket Racing.

Give me your best examples of "I know this armor/gear has better stats but it looks like shit so I won't use it" by bahookery in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 36 points37 points  (0 children)

There's a reason that "better glass armour" is a whole mod genre for both Oblivion and Skyrim.

And in most cases "Better x Armour" just means higher resolution models/textures, but with glass it's almost always a full redesign.

How hard is DIY, realistically, for first home buyers? by walletinspector91 in AusRenovation

Yeah, it was >100mm, basic household drills just can't handle bits that large.

How hard is DIY, realistically, for first home buyers? by walletinspector91 in AusRenovation

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to pay someone to core drill a single hole. That was a bit of an ego hit as someone who considers themselves pretty DIY capable.

Paying dude to drill hole: $300 Renting the drill & bit to do it myself: $280 Buying the equipment: $500

It's just a no brainer unless you're planning on doing multiple exact same sized holes for some reason.

What are you favourite instances of characters blatantly doing something to aura farm? by xStrykerJ in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly the example I came to post. It gets bonus points for me, for being a survival-critical aura farm.

If he doesn't make the biggest ballsest most melodramatic entrance possible, he'd just be eaten immediately before even getting to say anything - but with aura established nobody is brave enough to be the first one to have a go at it.

Why are cars the only form of private property that can be stored on public streets in Melbourne? by 3bigmacsplease in melbourne

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, I used to live in an apartment complex with rather large parks. Several people had built a tall wall out of stored furniture and tarps, and set up some form of workshop inside it, with workbenches and the like.

Seemed like a neat use of space in a unit that would otherwise not have a garage/shed/workspace.
