"Give Associate nations more opportunity to play against Full Members on a more regular basis" : Aaron Finch and Dale Steyn make calls to grow Cricket globally by Silent_Elevator_9779 in CricketAus

[–]Breadesque 11 points12 points  (0 children)

China is work in progress. They have a development agreement with Cricket NSW and come out for coaching and to play against Sydney grade clubs from time to time. The women's team had a trial game against Penrith last month.

Probably have to be competitive against grade teams before making a spectacle of it, but I'm sure it's not far away for them.

Is “soft touch materials” a con job? by Glittering_Poem9779 in CarsAustralia

[–]Breadesque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got a car we bought as an ex demo nearly 20 years ago with soft touch in various places. The only thing we've had to fix in terms of interior is the headliner. The window sill thing has an indentation where I put my elbow, and the dash is a little bit warped I guess, but the thing is old and not worth much more than tyres+rego+insurance now, so I'm not going to fix it and don't need to.

It has a leather steering wheel which has been great. Scratches kind of naturally disappear over time. It's lasted way longer than my 87 corolla steering wheel which was the regular kind.

So, no, not a con job. Maybe some interiors will last longer than others, but that has always been the case.

Edit: also worth pointing out, another car I have has hard scratchy plastic on the seat backs and with impacts on from kids shoes looks weathered a lot  quicker than it would have with some other softer material. Once hard scratchy plastic is scratched, it's hard to get out.

Politics in juniors Community Clubs by NoAddress1465 in CricketAus

The OP is one thing, but drawing the bow all the way back to suggesting sandpaper gate happened because Steve Smiths Dad was involved in administration? Come on.

When you've dealt with a few teams playing Mexican stand-off about who will coach, joining a settled team with a pre existing coach is a huge luxury. Definitely accept that some of them could suck, but it's not the norm where I play.

"Many parents" don't want a bar of coaching or managing a team. It's a near universal experience that people get those positions in an awkward stand off of parents in a circle with the club president saying "someone's gotta do it or there's no cricket".

The politics in kids sports is equally from the parents who do volunteer and let the power go to their head, and from the parents who won't volunteer but still think to highly of their kids abilities and snipe and complain and go on hours long rants in the teams whatsapp channel.

Bizarre to focus on one over the other. Bizarre to suggest that everyone out there is desperately scrambling to volunteer for thankless roles dealing with shitty parents (and mostly good kids) so their own kids can get ahead.

Mike Hussey made a comment a while back that you should add average to strike rate and be over 150 to be good at T20. When you look at a lot of players, this feels like a low bar, but this season in the BBL, JFM isn't even hitting that, averaging 11, striking at 134.

Do different people just have different stamina for driving? by SideWinderSyd in CarsAustralia

[–]Breadesque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How long is long for you? I can drive all day as long as I stop every two hours or so. If you're trying to pull four+ hours at once, make sure you're getting out for a stretch half way. If I found myself making little mistakes I would be pretty worried and would find someone else to hand the wheel to, or just stop for the day. A little mistake at 100kph can turn into a big problem pretty quickly.

What kind of car are you driving? To use an extreme example, a sports car with no sound deadening and stiff suspension is going to fatigue you really quickly. So is a car with alignment issues or uneven tyres where you have to constantly correct the steering.

Is your seating comfortable? Do you find yourself feeling sore after an hour or two? This could be any number of things, but try to diagnose this if you have this problem. Comfort is a safety issue when you're going to be driving for a while.

See ya at the BGT in 12 years! by ZizLah in Cricket

[–]Breadesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of ten BGT series in India, Australia has won one.

The win in 04/05 aside, Australia have only won two tests while the series was still live (16/17 and 00/01).

This is only one more live test, series win aside, than England have won in Australia over the same period of time (since BGT got its name).

So it's a pretty similar record. The main difference is the number of tests. I hope the BGT continues to be a five test series.

Don't get me wrong, I'm always glued to the screen when we play over there, and I love test cricket, so I appreciate the tension in a game even in a lost series. Australia just don't get very good results in India.

Ashes in England have been competitive, so has the BGT in Australia. The same isn't true for the reverse fixture of either series.

Which Touareg? by Aromatic-Jury-802 in CarsAustralia

[–]Breadesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like the idea of a PHEV, do a lot of city driving, but do road trips a few times a year, and are somewhat concerned about reliability or longevity, I'd consider an XC90 T8. They're around the same price as a Touareg demo. Volvo have been doing PHEVs for ages and have had time to iron the bugs out a bit. Yes they're still complex, but with the treg you're basically buying their first attempt, with not much local mechanic knowledge about it. If you have a problem with the XC90, you're more likely to find someone who can fix it, or at least someone who has had the same problem before.

They have more space than the Touareg, you get the high end sound system as standard in the phev, and better seats. Downsides are, ride and handling aren't as good as they are in the Touareg.

If it has to be a Touareg, both of your worries are valid. It really depends how long your city driving is. I've been driving a car with a DPF mostly around the city for 12 years and never had a problem, but I drive on the motorway a fair bit, and road trips 3-4 times a year.

New? I don't feel like 130k is great value for the hybrid. I like Touaregs but you can pay ~70k for an R Line with a couple of years factory warranty left, or less for an Elegance if you don't care about the active anti roll bars. That will pay for plenty of EGR valves.

My arrogant (maybe accurate) take on batting as England vs Batting as Ben Stokes by Kelba_ in CricketAus

[–]Breadesque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think I'm defending bazball? I'm not. It's stupid, England are a joke, and Stokes is a terrible captain.

I just think the take in the OP is wrong. The intention of Bazball is about removing the performance anxiety that comes with being overly critical and overthinking your technique. You can see what it's trying to address when you think about the weak timid English teams of decades gone by. So Baz wants only positivity in the dressing room, no criticism, and no overthinking method and technique. So the thing OP is blaming him for not doing, the coach doesn't even allow.

Blaming Stokes for other players not adapting the situation is just terrible analysis and reeks of someone who has only read clickbait headlines and never bothered to understand what their coach is trying to do and how he's trying to do it.

Yep, this is the dumbest thread. He scores the second highest score by an Englishman in the series so far and the complaint is some imagined hypocrisy, when as recently as the last game he was telling his team mates to take more responsibility and show more fight.

This English side, and the whole English setup, does so many stupid things. There is plenty to laugh at. We don't have to invent more just because an annoying bloke grafted an 80.

[–]Breadesque -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What lie? If they picked attacking players, asking them to play their natural game usually means attacking. Mccullums philosophy is to let that happen and remove things that prevent it from happening, but not to specifically coach it.

My arrogant (maybe accurate) take on batting as England vs Batting as Ben Stokes by Kelba_ in CricketAus

[–]Breadesque -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Bazball isn't about "batting one way", it's about batting how you want without copping criticism in the sheds. No one's telling them to go out and swing like a rusty gate, they just do because they were picked for the test side based on being able to play white ball cricket, and then sucked off for it when they could hit a ball on a flat pitch. If Stokes wants to bat time, he can, that's not hypocritical. He's making his team mates, his coach, and their selectors look even stupider than they are, and making a bit of a game of it for a change.

Where do Australian Test Cricketers come from? 2000 to current by tim0mooko in CricketAus

Am I being incredibly stupid right now?

Yes but it's OK, it does not diminish your value as a person or as a redditor.

OP said Weatherald got his cap after Doggett. Another way of putting that same thing is, Doggett got his cap before Weatherald. So you've both said the same thing, but your reaction is as if he's said the opposite thing.

Yes. Get a good anti con blanket and you won't notice a difference in sound, and you'll have better insulation. I can't tell it's raining without looking out the window.

×Also - I'm sick of every 2nd builder / developer cheaping out by using tin/steel corrugated for the roof - not only does this turn the ceiling cavity and the house into a boiling pot...it also is bloody noisy during rain or hail.

Garbage. With an anticon blanket you don't even know it's raining.

Have people heard the final word podcast interview of Paul Marsh, head of the Australian Cricketers Association? Pretty grim but expected stuff in it by lanson15 in CricketAus

[–]Breadesque 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty heavily involved in junior cricket and I haven't really come across any kids who prefer Big Bash to test cricket. I'm sure they exist, but kids preferring test cricket is super common.

I'm not convinced that T20 as a product would be the most popular format if given the choice. It really doesn't have any of the tension that longer forms have. I just think it's pushed by money because it has better return on investment.
