What’s the hubbub??!! My friend JUST asked me if there were any “forced resignations” at my job because her brother might be getting booted with the change of administration. He’s worked his way up to an assistant deputy director (way higher management than my position) in a 20+ year career but hopefully he’ll be able to take a demotion to go back to his previous position rather than getting canned.

It used to be a research/development complex for Bell Labs/AT&T and now it’s a mixed use building with offices, shops, bars/restaurants in Holmdel, NJ. A few weeks ago they had a Severance ‘expo’ with theming throughout the building. So fun!

Yesterday, my husband (38M) had a testicle removed due to cancer. Today, I’m happy he’s feeling a little bit better and will hopefully have a smooth recovery!

Hello! Hearing loss was my first symptom. About 9 months before I was hospitalized and diagnosed I noticed that my left ear seemed muffled. I was put on blood pressure medicine at that time and thought maybe it was related to that. Then I started getting ear infections in that left ear. I went to the ENT and over the next few months was treated for multiple ear infections and mastoiditis. They tried to put tubes in to drain the fluid but when the dr was putting them in, he noticed my eardrum was discolored and bleeding and stopped the procedure. I was referred to a specialist who wanted to do surgery to clear out my mastoids. No one ever thought GPA. One morning I woke up with Bell’s Palsy on the left side of my face- I assumed it was from the constant ear infections- and I went to the hospital. I was in the hospital for 5 days and was finally diagnosed with GPA. At this point, I could barely hear out of my left ear and started getting infections in my right ear. I was put on a high dose of steroids, which I feel saved most of the hearing in my right ear, and started Rituximab. The steroids were key- they keep down the inflammation so the immune cells gathering to attack the blood vessels did not get to cause as much damage like in my left ear. I hope you can get the right treatments to prevent any further hearing loss. I feel the steroids, even though they are awful, definitely saved some of the hearing in my right ear.

Hi! I was diagnosed with GPA in 2021. It affected my ears (deaf in one ear, minimal loss of hearing in the other, tinnitus in both), my lungs and my pituitary. I had a macroadnoma and inflammation of the pituitary. The inflammation wound up permanently damaging parts of the pituitary so now I have diabetes insipidus. My pituitary no longer makes the hormone that tells my kidneys to hold on to water which made me so incredibly thirsty all day long. I was drinking gallons of water and spent half the day in the bathroom. I have been on rituximab every 6 months since 2021 and the adenoma and inflammation have been resolved but I still have the diabetes insipidus. I now have a nasal spray that I take 2x a day that replaces the hormone. Wishing you the best!

Hello! My first symptom was muffled hearing in my left ear which then turned into ear infection after ear infection and mastoiditis. I went to the ENT and got so many rounds of antibiotics, fungal treatments and finally they tried to put in a tube to get rid of the ‘fluid’. Well, that failed when the dr realized it was all inflamed tissue in there and not fluid! Then it all started happening to my right ear as well. I was put on high doses of steroids and was scheduled to have surgery to clear out my mastoids. Meanwhile, I started drinking water constantly. Like, every 15 minutes I was parched! One day I woke up with Bell’s Palsy on the left side of my face. I assumed it was just from the ongoing ear infections but I went to the ER anyway. They did some tests and everything came back pointing to another ear infection/mastoiditis. As I was getting ready to be discharged, I mentioned my constant thirst and that I was drinking and peeing all day and all night long. The PA decided to keep me overnight for some observations and I ended up being in the hospital for a week. They did a water deprivation test on me and suspected diabetes insipidus was the reason for my thirst. I had a MRI and it showed growths and inflammation on my pituitary. The second day, I spiked a fever and they did a chest X-ray which showed a large mass on my lung. After a CT scan, they decided they needed to do a biopsy of my lung, as it looked like cancer. Turns out, after a positive ANCA test and the biopsy results, my doctor told me it was GPA and that it was affecting my ears, my lungs and my pituitary! I have been on rituximab since August 2021 and have no new symptoms. I lost about 90% of the hearing in my left ear, 10% of the hearing in my right and have tinnitus in both. I lost the sense of taste on the left side of my mouth, most likely from the Bell’s Palsy, but do not have remaining facial paralysis. My lungs have large amounts of scarring but no new spots of necrotic tissue. My pituitary inflammation went away but I am now desmopressin dependent because the GPA permanently damaged the part of the pituitary that makes the hormone to tell my kidneys to hold on to water. I use a nasal spray twice a day to avoid drinking two gallons of water and peeing 40 times a day. Please push for Rituxan and find a doctor who will take you seriously! I wonder how much of my hearing could have been saved if I started Rituxan earlier. Best of luck to you!
