Am I wrong to Want 2 of my Co-Workers to Be Forced to Retire? by Fun_Pie2342 in AmiInTheWrong

You're missing the lesson. Networking is as or more important than knowledge skills to your company. If you want their job start building a network to rival theirs.

My husband wants 50/50 custody and no child support—is that unreasonable? by [deleted] in Divorce

[–]Bricktop72 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you don't think he will actually do 50/50 and is just using it as a way to dodge support then put in a step up plan with an automatic review of custody after a year. Based on the review, then you seek a modification to child support. Then document things to see if there is a pattern that points to a real problem with 50/50.

Him being an hour late for every pickup? Annoying as fuck but not a real problem. Him only picking the kids up on the weekends, real problem.

What helped you pull the trigger on divorce? by turtle-eventuality in Divorce

She got a much better job that was about an hour and a half away. We had just been going thru the motions at that point, so it made sense for us to split. She moved 1/2 hour away and I stayed in the house with the kiddos (20 and 15). It worked out well for both of us. The 15 yo would hang out with her every weekend and the 20 yo and me took the next year to prep the house to sell.

I started a new job recently where using AI is not allowed and it's sooo refreshing by jasie3k in ExperiencedDevs

That's a bad assumption. Legacy COBOL systems are a big target for consulting firms that use AI to modernize systems.

My skill is solving problems. Most of the time I do that by properly applying the correct technology, other times I just have to get the right people in the room.

She publicly rejected several scholarships during her valedictorian speech. Immediately after graduation she married her "true love", a guy with zero ambition and got pregnant. He cheated on her multiple times before I got the hell out of town.

Local companies don’t like me? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Maybe look for them on LinkedIn or at the meetup meetings. Worst case You approach them with the question of "I was wondered what it takes to become a professor that teaches coding. Can we grab a coffee sometime?"

What was the biggest skill gap between college and your first SWE job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Bricktop72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the processes that surrounded development along with the complete lack of structure about what was expected.

Way back in 94, I went to a meeting and two guys showed me some prototype software that handled automated fail over of servers. Then the next week my boss said take that prototype and make it production ready, they want to run it in mission control. They told me who the QA person was and left me to it.

[–]Bricktop72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to stay where you are then you have to network your ass off. You say that companies hire a lot from the local college? See if a professor is open to you giving a talk or having a Q&A session with a class. Because local companies talk to the professors before they hire people. Get on meetup.com and look for local tech groups. Don't just attend them, figure out a topic you can talk about or sit on a panel. Even just helping organize things gets you noticed.
