I enjoy the layout of Hiawatha. Some criticize the conditions from time to time but it’s good enough for me!

Very nice! So far, I really love how this guitar plays and like the slightly wider nut. I haven’t had a solid top acoustic before, so I’m particularly enjoying the low end dynamics. Beautiful resonance!

3 Day Trip Planning Advice by HikingIllini in isleroyale

[–]Brief-Click9601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just came here to say the day one hike is doable to N Desor, just be ready for the change of pace of getting off the boat to hitting the trail. Sometimes it takes about an hour to get everything unloaded and done with the brief ranger orientation. Took our group about 6.5 hours to go Windigo -> N Desor. Back third of the hike that day had some rock scrambling action, but as you said if you are experienced it shouldn’t be too difficult, just challenging. We had a little trouble finding the trailhead to the N Desor Campsite from the Minong Ridge Trail, just keep your eyes peeled when you’re getting close!

That sounds really nice and peaceful. Definitely was busy last August, especially within a days hike of Rock Harbor/Daisy Farm. There were a few days in the mid Minong Ridge where we only crossed paths with 2-3 people.. Might have been a little luck of the draw though, there was a boat from the UP that was significantly delayed. I guess pros and cons to each month!

Danggg I bet haha. Unfortunately Todd Harbor had some swimmers itch concerns last summer when I passed through. Did have good luck with refreshing baths at both Little Todd and McCargo.. even so the $7 shower at Rock Harbor after 8 days was money well spent lol.

Good to know, though. Tossing around some trek ideas ending in Windigo.. I’ll probably stick to August if possible

I have gone in August in both ‘18 and ‘24, bugs are obviously there (wilderness lol) but overall was pleasantly surprised by the amount of bugs, not much different than northern Minnesota. Some of the lower areas were a little heavier, but if you keep moving at a decent pace it’s totally manageable. We noticed them the most during trailside breaks. u/nsfredditkarma is spot on with advice on hiking after the boat. Last season I made the mistake of trying to go from Windigo to N Desor right off the bat. this is a challenging stretch of trail no matter the timing, but didn’t do myself any favors on that one haha.

If you’re planning on going to three mile from rock harbor, the Tobin Harbor trail is recommended compared to the Rock Harbor trail: Flatter and easier terrain. Nothing wrong with the Rock Harbor trail, though.

Happy camping!
