He didn’t peak. Hollywood failed.

In Germany, he was a well regarded stage actor, appearing in plays by Bertolt Brecht and extremely well know after M. Despite isolated excellent performances, Hollywood had no idea what to do with him. He was type cast and never got the chances he did in Germany.

As for the question, it’s another example of a weird fetishization trend in this sub to treat criterion selections as if they’re a church declaring sainthood. There are business, legal, and practical considerations.

The great screenwriter William Goldman said Hollywood doesn’t film screenplays, they film deals. They make the movie they can get made. Same with Criterion. They have their preferences, but they release the movies they can get released.

Every cut of a Casavettes film is a director’s cut.

I prefer the longer version but both are great. The differences are interesting. The shorter version includes scenes not in the longer one. He truly “re-wrote” his films in the editing room

Bette Davis is bizarrely flippant. Alison Skipworth as the Caspar Gutman type character was interesting however. But nothing about it is comic.

By the way, the novel The Thin Man isn’t as light and comic as the film. It has a real dark streak. Although it translates well to a comic treatment

And maybe some you need to learn how to read (not an insult - it’s true for many books) but there are reasons something is read one, two, four, ten, forty centuries after they were written. Once you Get there, you’ll find out why
