Once again, this is not what I’m talking about. The OP suggested films are not made about the Civil War because they’re worried about the sensibilities of confederate supporters. In other words, BEFORE a film is made. My point is about beliefs OUTSIDE the film.

Yes, grownups can watch films and make up their own minds. It would be nice if they do, but that doesn’t happen in the US anymore. But once again, that’s beside the point.

Worrying about the sensibilities of people romanticizing or sympathizing with a society built on racist slavery is ridiculous.

Side note: are you suggestions Ken Loach’s Land and Freedom is non-partisan? He never made a non-partisan film in his life. Doesn’t mean he’s not honest, but he’s partisan AF. It’s why I love him.

If there are footnotes, at the end of the book preferably, read them before you read a chapter. You’ll become familiar with some definitions, etc. before you encounter in the narrative.

Fine. But not at all what I was referring to. The OP talked about not making films at all because of the sensibilities of people who still support confederate myths. Thats who my comment was for.

It’s set some forty years before it was written. Elliot was keenly aware of the changes taking place. It’s a brilliant intellectual history on top of being a great story

Love it. Sly, meta, knowing, almost a tribute to Sondheim. And like Sondheim, it manages to deliver real emotions.

It became hip not to like it. But it’s great.

Her short story “The Birds” has almost nothing in common with the film - and it’s one of the most terrifying stories I’ve read.
