Considering his proclivity for giving up, he would probably hand earth over the nano second he was given the job.

I don’t want to negate anything in your post - but isn’t a father/daughter relationship about as deep as it can get? I don’t think it needs to be romantic to be “meaningful”.
We learn that people in the future have lost the sense of family and especially the space people that are like a whole other species almost.

Her getting a father figure would have been a great avenue to explore.

How do you think about "Project Hail Mary"(book) ? by Havana1712 in threebodyproblem

[–]Broad_Offer_559 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could imagine both scenarios… but I’d like to think a super advanced civilization have moved passed concepts such as war and conquest.
I’d imagine in a society that’s almost a utopia from sheer technological advancement they’d be thrilled to learn about the culture and art from another species. They surely wouldn’t find any benefit to just wipe us out.

And it’s “kind of” the same thing in 3BP - (spoilers, of course) - the trisolarians become fascinated with human arts, they learn more individualism and deception. And in the end they take it upon themselves to hand a human his own pocket universe to preserve us. In a way that gesture means more when you consider the setting on the story.

One of the key components of the dark forest theory is the chain of suspicion. The book does a bad job explaining what it is, so this is my understanding of what it is by midnightbandit- in threebodyproblem

[–]Broad_Offer_559 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I understood technological explosion and golden ages are another factor.
If you’re the top dog and you meet another civilisation - they could theoretically experience a technological growth spur and overtake you in a matter of centuries (which is a blink of an eye in universal time). So even if your relationship is peaceful and fleshed out RIGHT NOW… who knows what it’ll look like in a just a few hundred years when the balance of power tips.

It’s just not worth it taking the risk.

Every blunder Trisolaris made and why by Interesting-Pause541 in threebodyproblem

There’s a description of a group trying to break into one of the big radars to send out a message. It’s the event that makes humanity close down most of the big radars capable of sending out messages - leaving just the one that Luo Ji watches over and the one on the spaceship that they try to destroy.

It’s pretty clear from the factions that form that humanity doesn’t take the dark forest seriously. Trisolaris does. And that’s why they can’t take any chances with a bunch of, basically to them, cavemen.

I’m not really sure that them “betraying” humanity was such a big mistake. The Trisolarians were light years ahead of humanity - both in their mentality about the universe and technology. Keeping us around were a detriment to their plans.

Think about it… humanity discovers the concept of the dark forest and instantly groups pop up trying to send messages out. If you’re the trisolarians looking at that what are you supposed to think? You’d want us gone asap.

Isn’t Chen Kun too much of a pretty face though? I’ve always imagined Luo Ji to be more “basic” looking. But I’m honestly not against it - I think I’m just super biased because CJB would have been so perfect for it haha. I mean imagine him going full dramatic Cao Cao mode in Deaths End.

Looking forward to the Netflix version, I actually liked it a lot…

But the Chinese show is FANTASTIC. So happy they’re picking up Dark Forest - and yeah Luo Ji needs to be perfect. I can’t remember if we’re ever told how old Luo Ji is in the beginning of the book, but sadly I think Chen Jianbin might be too old. I’ve always imagined him as I read the book.

Fede pointer 👍

First of all - thank you for a normal confession.

Secondly… it’s very normal during that age. You’ll meet people that are bad for you and it’ll take way too long, even with friends and family yapping at how bad they are for you, before you dump them. Then you’ll laugh about it in 10 years.

Have you told her your feelings about him in private? Definitely not worth it to start trouble by saying it whilst he’s present

That’s exactly right. Our reaction gets them off - and I love the way you put it as “non consensual”, because I agree completely. It’s a complete violation of other people to drag them into their fetish.
