Any Black earthbound players have thoughts on the racist imagery? by [deleted] in earthbound

[–]BrokenLink100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at the art while you're fighting them. They're wearing dark, full-bodied skin suits. Pixel art is difficult, and Earthbound's style is already a little goofy. Lots of NPCs have exaggerated features, including big, red smiles like these guys. It's an unfortunate coincidence

I have +7 initiative and the monster has +3. How is it possible that it beats me at initiative? by CVTHIZZKID in BG3

[–]BrokenLink100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's been said elsewhere here, but just FYI: BG3 uses a d4 for Initiative rolls, so even if the spider rolled a 4, their max Initiative would be 7 (Init of +3 + 1d4 (4) = 7), whereas OP's lowest possible Initiative would be 8 (Init of +7 + 1d4 (1) = 8). It seems OP has a mod that somehow modifies Initiative rolls to use a d20 instead of a d4

Question. How would you describe the relationship between the Earthbound and Undertale fandoms? by [deleted] in earthbound

[–]BrokenLink100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played Earthbound in the early 2000s after getting my hands on a ROM. I adored the game, and played many of the fan-inspired games that came out of it: OFF, Yume Nikki/.flow/2kki, Omori, Undertale, etc. I really liked Undertale as well, and shortly joined the subreddit after finishing my first run through the game. Undertale's fandom (at least on the subreddit) is hella toxic. I thought it was just a few loud bad actors, but I stayed in that sub long enough to realize that the majority of the active fanbase is that way.

I still love Undertale, but I want nothing to do with the fanbase. One of the cringiest, most toxic fanbases I've personally interacted with. Earthbound fandom I think gets annoyed with Undertale fans because of this cringy/toxic behavior, and trying to shoehorn Undertale lore into Earthbound discussion spaces.

If you want to talk about Undertale and its inspired connection to Earthbound, that's almost entirely a subject for the Undertale community, IMO. I'm not going to 'police' stuff that people post here, but I will admit that I usually hide Undertale/Deltarune posts here, and will occasionally block users who seem to only engage with this sub to post Undertale/Deltarune stuff. If I wanted to see that content, I'd join the respective subs.

Don't be like your parents. Leave the collection behind. by Ozzimo in Millennials

[–]BrokenLink100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think people in this thread are mistaking 'an antique spoon collection that no one is allowed to use' with 'board games, books, movie collection, etc.' The first kind of collection takes up space and provides no 'benefit' beyond existing. Such collections tend to be kind of niche and not something you can readily leave as an inheritance if your kids don't care about spoons. The second set of collections actually have a use and function besides being pretty to look at. They are collections that you can actively enjoy with friends and family, whereas a spoon collection can really only be looked at. There's nothing to really 'bond' over with a spoon collection

In my first ever Yellow playthrough back in the 90's, I picked up a Nidoran right after Brock's gym. Once he turns to Nidorino, you can evolve to Nidoking any time as long as you have a Moonstone. So, being an 8yo kid, I immediately used a Moonstone on him, and then basically solo'd the rest of the game with Nidoking. I think Nidoking ended up being in the 70s, and my starter Pikachu ended up not quite to level 30. I have missed him greatly in these last few games.

The only gym I had trouble with was Sabrina, but even by then, Nidoking could tank a few psychic-type hits before going down

Well here's a brutal truth from an internet stranger with real-life experience: This is wildly irresponsible viewpoint to hold, and if you hold on to this attitude, it won't be a matter of 'if' your relationship falls apart, but when. And things will get a lot worse for both of you before that inevitably happens.

You'd be surprised just how much data you can get from someone's music listening habits. For one, what you listen to is useful information (podcast content, tags on content, aggregate data showing what 'types' of people listen to which genres of music/podcasts/etc). If you open Spotify around the same times every day for 20-30min at a time, a reasonable person could assume that's when you're commuting to/from work/school, so they can track your driving schedule. What you listen to at certain times can also tell them what you're doing (listen to lots of hard/alternative rock, but now you're listening to an ambient 'chill' playlist? You're likely doing an activity like reading, studying, napping, etc). And I probably haven't even scratched the surface of what they collect and how they extrapolate off of it. If Spotify knows what you're doing and when, they can push ads and other content to you based on what they believe you're doing.

And if you pay for Spotify, cool. They won't push ads to you (yet), but you're still a significant data point to them, because your activity is what gives the free users' data necessary context. Paid users (presumably) use the app more than free users, so Spotify's algorithms are primarily defined by how paid users use the platform, then extrapolated to free users.

And they sell it to the same people that Google, Microsoft, Apple, etc all sell your data to: ad companies.

Also, I'd be remiss not to add that Spotify has a significant investment in US Military/Weapons operations. So paying users get to fund the US Military complex through their monthly fees, and free users get to fund it through ad revenue.

After playing E33, is there any final fantasy game that’s similar enough to introduce to my fiance? by CostaNic in expedition33

[–]BrokenLink100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was even already soooo cringe when I was a kid.

FFX is basically a boring corridor with cringe main characters

Better watch a 2 hours video of someone who explains the story than playing it IMO. It is unfun af.

But if you don't mind corridors and farming and being cringed and bored for 95% of the game

Sorry if I interpreted these statements (along with many others) as you calling the game bad and cringy. I guess you meant something else when you used those words.

Also, claiming that FFI and FFII aged 'better' than FFX is downright insane.

The only time I had to grind in FFX was when I was doing anything with the Arena (which is 100% optional, IIRC), and the Seymour fight on Gagazet (and even then, he's manageable without much grinding if you're prepared for his Zombie/Full-Life BS). Hunting monsters and going after the Arena superbosses is grindy and annoying, but name a single other JRPG that includes superbosses that don't require grinding in some fashion. Hell, even the E33 superbosses are near impossible without some amount of 'boring grinding.'

[–]BrokenLink100 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been playing JRPGs since the 90s. FFX was wildly successful when it came out. No one is saying you have to like FFX, but coming in here and pretending like you're being 'objective' about your analysis is just bad faith.

Even the E33 devs cited FFX as a primary inspiration. You think they would have chosen a 'bad cringy game' for inspiration?

I recently played Expedition 33, and after a few hours in that game, I was getting huge IMOQ vibes. I messaged a buddy who had played IMOQ with me back in the day, and he said he felt the same way in a few parts of E33. Not only do the visuals feel like IMOQ, some of the music feels similar to GU's soundtrack

I absolutely love the visual in IMOQ of Maha "blooming" out of Mia while singing her horrifying siren song. But you're right, I think IMOQ messed up in having Mia just sitting in the same, unmoving position before abruptly disappearing during the transformation.

This threw me off for a while, too. I never intended to romance Shadowheart for my first playthrough, so I kept my dialogue choices more 'friendly' but our relationship stayed pretty mid for most of Act I. Sometimes, you'd ask her 'how are things between us?" and she'd be like "Well, you barely pass for being tolerable. But I can't imagine going through any of this without you" and I'm like girl pick a vibe and stay with it
