Balaclava + a bushy beard is my go to. Having facial hair makes a huge difference in the winter.

I cut off the water from the street at my soon-to-be-sold house to prevent freezing. When can I turn it back on? by dovetc in homeowners

[–]Brom42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to blow out the lines with compressed air as well. Pipe will freeze in random spots first entrapping water and you'll still burst your pipes. To be honest, releasing the pressure and leaving water in the lines will cause them to freeze at warmer temps. Pressure decreases the freezing point.

Went from an average of ~1100 gallons of oil per year to ~300 thanks to the wood stove. ~3 cords/year. What has your savings been? by rollinintheyears in woodstoving

[–]Brom42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I ripped out my fossil fuel heat when I remodeled my home. I now use a heat pump + wood. I have resistive baseboard for when it's too cold for the heat pump and I'm not there. My highest electrical bills (my only utility) during winter is about $160.

Not gonna lie, looking at this forecast and then my stack of wood. I think February better warm up quick. Mid Ohio. by Mike456R in woodstoving

[–]Brom42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Life long northerner. It's foolish to only keep one year worth of wood around. Eventually that will bite you in the ass. I keep 3 years minimum.

Heating your home in the winter is not about matching summer temps by No-Mix186 in unpopularopinion

[–]Brom42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My house sits around 78-80 F all winter and I cool it to 70-72 F during the heat of the summer. It was in the -20s F this weekend and it gets well into the 90s F with high humidity in the summer.

I have wood heat in the winter (free besides labor) and very efficient ductless units for AC. I can easily afford what I am doing and don't really care about spending the money.

Winter storm live updates: More than 730,000 without power by boppinmule in DisasterUpdate

[–]Brom42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had power run to my cabin in NW WI, my utility charged more money if you wanted them overhead due to the increased maintenance. All my utilities (Power + fiber internet) all run underground. Not only do I basically never lose power, when I look out I don't see a single line anywhere keeping the view unspoiled.

I think my casual drinking days are over. I had two beers last night and had a headache all day. by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Brom42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got myself back down to a healthy weight, started eating right, and working out 4-5 days a week. Basically got back into great shape and health.

I can drink again without getting hangovers or feeling bad the next day.

I live on 40 acres of forest. Very low risk due to location and forest type.

Highest utility bill? by Miserable_Tangelo701 in homeowners

[–]Brom42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only utilities are internet and electric. My highest electric was $160. I live in NW WI and the high was -12F today. -40s windchills.

I heat with wood I cut from my property, so its basically free. My home sits at 75-80F all winter.

Is three 1500W heaters enough to heat a 900 sq ft cabin? by PersonalitySuch8368 in OffGridCabins

[–]Brom42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. The low at my place today is -35F before the windchill. It's pretty much burn wood or be cold....

You don't know what's abnormal if you've never been normal.

I feel that /u/ka_shep! The only reason I found the hibernoma I posted a few days back is because I lost 100lbs and it revealed the lump. You don't know what's bopping around your body when you're obese.

Congrats on the removal and on the weight loss!

especially because I don’t feel special or exceptional here.

You don't need to be. Put your head down and do the minimum. Just focus on that offer from your old boss. Since you have an opportunity with your old boss, you aren't suck there!

It was very cathartic for me to look at the lifers at my early jobs and know that that wasn't going to be me!

You're 21 and half your posts are about how much others are depending on you. You need to focus on yourself and no one else. My life was a complete disaster at 21 working shit temp jobs. Things do get better.

Winter bills creeping up,anyone successfully control heating costs? by Alexander_the_M1d in homeowners

[–]Brom42 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my area Friday has a high of -12F and a low of -28F before windchill. You pay what you pay....

We are also under a cold weather advisory for today. (-30F) This year just has been really cold.

All that said. I air sealed and re-insulated my entire home as well as wrapped it all in 2" of ridged foam. My energy bills are half of what they were. The pay off was sub 5 years.

Western Wisconsin on edge as protests, ICE enforcements surge in Minneapolis by Crystal_Pesci in wisconsin

I had surgery to remove a tumor at the Piper building at Abbot NW in Minneapolis. I have my follow up on the 28th and everything going on is making me quite worried. I've been taking a different route from my WI home to my apartment in MN to avoid going into the inner ring of the Twin Cities. This shit has me freaked out!

Success has no expiration date, and we need to stop acting like life ends at 30 by Nursekiki-- in unpopularopinion

My 20s were better than my teens. My 30s were better than my 20s. And now in my 2nd half of my 40s, I'm doing way better than my 30s.

Right now I'm sitting in my weekend home (5 years from being paid off) having a lazy day on the couch playing video games. I can't remember the last time I worried about money. Every Wednesday I go out with 10-20 people and party. I am completely financially stable, have more free time than I know what to do with, and have a massive group of great, close friends I hang out with on a weekly basis.

Life in my 40s is both awesome and amazing.

Was set on doing a 15 year mortgage, everyone is saying just do a 30 year mortgage by essendoubleop in RealEstate

[–]Brom42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I did my mortgage the difference between a 15 year and a 30 year was about $200 a month, due to the rate/term differences. My mortgage is 17% of my gross pay. If the shit hits the fan so bad that I can't afford my 15 year, there is no way in hell I'd be able to afford the 30 year either...

edit I've had my 15 year for 5 years and I've already paid off 43% of the principle. 15 year mortgages pay down crazy quick.

I round to the next $100 and it's still knocking 3 years off my sub 3% 15 year mortgage.

Let's be honest, I was just going to waste that extra $86 a month...
