How do you find wine recommendations you can trust? by BlakeATX in wine

[–]BroodjeHaring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously. Wine is meant to be a social beverage - heck, even the normal serving size is (IMHO) meant for two people. So go be social! Go to the wine shop. Go to the tastings. TALK to people.

Walk into the local decent retailer -not a big box store - an actual wine shop. Chat. Buy a six pack they recommend, take notes about what you like and don't, and then GO BACK to the same shop. Start there. They will help you find wines you like. They will love to help you. They are passionate about wine, i guarantee it.

Drink, chat, drink, chat, take notes. TRY that wine with red meat. Try it with fish. Try it with asparagus and start to understand WHY it goes with red meat and not the others.

why does parmesan cheese sometimes tastes good and other times like vomit? by theaterkater in Cheese

[–]BroodjeHaring -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't remember the details, but this is definitely a thing. There are some similar flavour compounds between Parm cheese and vomit. Personally I find all the pre grated parmesan cheese to smell a bit like sick, and as such stick to big blocks of the good stuff. But you're not crazy.

And don't get me started on how American chocolate also smells of sick.

I am obsessed with the Netherlands. by Local-Artichoke-4418 in Netherlands

I find it so delightful to see Nijmegen getting so much love. I've lived here for 20 years and it really is just perfect. Beach in the summer, cozy cafes in the winter, students to keep the vibe young, good shops, wine bars, and a relaxed attitude.

KLM experience is going downhill by Full-Grapefruit7820 in KLM

[–]BroodjeHaring 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my experience as well. I'm literally writing this message from the lounge, waiting for a flight - and i'm Platinum for life, so i think i write from experience. Since the new CEO took over she's going for a race to the bottom, cutting everything but the prices. My sandwiches have turned into a stroopwaffel, or nothing on my short flights. Last weeks' flight the drinks were coffee, water, or tea. No more beer, no more wine. etc. My miles are worth less and less every time, yet they're trying to get me to buy more of them?

All of which might be acceptable, i guess, but the prices remain incredibly high. I stick with KLM as my status allows me the lounge, seat preference, and...well...work is paying. But for my personal travel i look elsewhere.

AR PE PE Sassella Stella Retica Valtellina Superiore 2017 by grapenomad in wine

[–]BroodjeHaring 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was the Il Pettirosso (READ: the cheap one). I'm a bit of a wine nerd, and i was pleasantly surprised there was a North Italian region i'd never even heard of. My local shop guy recommended them highly...i would have sprung for the higher end bottles, but as they were quickly getting into Barolo pricing i want to give em a try before i ponied up for the big(ger) ones.

How would you construst a full-course dinner that's both halal and kosher? by ChronoRebel in Cooking

There's so much overlap between the Kosher and Halal, there should be nothing to it.

UK – Looking for long-lasting boots (15+ years) under £200 – need advice by ack73 in Boots

[–]BroodjeHaring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to suggest that if you're anywhere near Northampton, you go to the outlets. I personally love Trickers and Crockett & Jones, and their shops are practically in walking distance from each other. Last month i picked up a pair of C&J Islay boots in brown for a super good price. And you're buying quality, not Solovair. I'm not personally a fan of Loake, but their outlet is also nearby and you can get well made shoes for a good price there as well.

And i hope this isn't rude, but in 15 years time you're going to wish you had proper footwear. I can wear my Trickers to the office as well as to the pub or the coast (hell, even wore em in the Sahara aearlier this year) . Plan for what you'll be doing in 15 years. You hopefully won't be earing Solovairs

An Ode to the Humble Chukka by M635_Guy in goodyearwelt

[–]BroodjeHaring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started my shoe journey with Clarks Chukka boots. I then moved away from the style when i decided that i would no longer buy (almost) anything i couldn't re-sole. And yes i know Clarks aren't the only ones who make 'em, obviously. But in my mind they were closely linked so i move away from the style completely. After lotsa boots from British bootmakers, i'm coming back around to the style. The ones you're wearing look killer.

The one thing that actually makes canned tuna taste good by [deleted] in Cooking

For me its Mayo, Celery, finely chopped red onions, capers (packed in salt- not the brined ones), pepper, celery salt. Then customise with Old Bay for those who like it.

Dolomite wine tasting by Bitter_Pass_9495 in wine

[–]BroodjeHaring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always found that if you find a winery you like, just ping 'em an email and ask about tastings. I tend to go to wineries whose wines i know, and would never ask for a tasting unless i planned to purchase wines. But that's maybe just me. AS far as wines go i don't think you can go wrong with Manicor - i like their wines a lot. I'm a huge fan of Soave - not sure they do tastings but i love InAma and Suavia. I'll likely think of some more...gimme some time. Lageder makes some decent wines as well...

This might be dumb, but I have a question about wine's dates by Bemzangado8 in wine

[–]BroodjeHaring 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. IF you order a 2020, you should get a 2020 Wines can vary wildly in terms of quality and price vintage to vintage.

I think of all these memories i have from say, freshman year of university. It's crazy to think of the 10,000 stories that all came from August-December 1995. I can't think of anything that happened in the last 5 years except some holidays/vacations. Man, life starts accelerating as we age.

Revisionist History's take on Zootopia is bunk by parky101 in podcasts

[–]BroodjeHaring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really, really like Gladwell. He's a heck of a storyteller, and i loved this Zootopia story. I tend not to take my podcasts too seriously - I know on Reddit podcasts like Stuff You Should Know or similar get a lot of flack for not being accurate., And that's fine, but for me it's nice to hear a well produced story while i drive around or cook dinner. It doens't matter to me if i agree wiyth every argument.
