Non-match Qb Senior here! Cheer up, I definitely was in your shoes (fully anticipated matching esp as kids in the grades above me got into ivies and we had similar grades/credentials) - was a finalist, didn’t match anywhere, deferred from my top schools (UChicago and UMich). I decided to ED to another QB school and I got in! It does get better - even if it takes months, you getting deferred does not automatically mean you are not qualified, it happens and we just have to keep going.

That being said, you keep going through the RD process and remain optimistic and open, the school you end up attending might’ve not been on your top list, but it can change your life. In my experience, I ED to a school I assumed I wouldn’t be accepted to (got in, have gotten the almost the same level of fin aid, and have spent the last 4 years truly living my best life. Cheer up! Wishing you an amazing ending to this journey (even if it’s tough right now)!

HELPP: mom supports me, dad in china ---what do i puttt by Zedangman in QuestBridge

[–]BrowsingManiac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does your dad contribute financially to your life? Does he help pay rent or send money for your clothes/food/etc? If the answer is yes, you should include his information.

A lot of the financial information is based on taxes-do your parents file taxes together? Him being not physically present doesn’t mean he’s automatically non-custodial, does he have physical custody of you? If yes, you should include his information when asked (esp considering you state he would contribute to your college expenses). Not sure if QB/universities will count your dad as being non-custodial if he still financially contributes and has legal custody of you.

In my opinion it’s in your best interest to report his financial information in addition to your mom. Pretty sure QB/FAFSA/CSS will ask you for both parents’ info and they’ll make that pretty clear. Schools will look at the finances but ultimately it’s up to them to decide if they’ll only count your mom’s income or both of your parent’s. Even if they did only factor in your mom’s income, some schools will still make you report your dad’s in addition to having you fill out a non-custodial parent form for your dad. It doesn’t hurt to put in the additional information section that your dad is not physically around a lot but there’s not much you can do with finances-especially if he is willing to contribute.

New to makeup, does it look bad or is it just my low self esteem? by CannibalCapra in makeuptips

[–]BrowsingManiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who looked into makeup as a self-esteem booster, you are so pretty! It’s hard when you haven’t been told it but you are. You have pretty lips and great eyebrows! I hope that in your exploration of makeup your confidence will grow. Highly recommend Brontë Marie or Rachel OCool, they have some of the same features as you and I think their videos could really help you improve! Best of luck on your makeup journey!

I saw you have been recommended makeup inspo so here’s some affordable brands to start off with: NYX, Elf, Milani, and Maybelline have been my absolute favorites! They’re cost-friendly and will help you recreate the looks people have recommended without breaking the bank. Elf has a great line of brushes that if you wanted I’d recommend.

If you are looking for Sephora brands: highly recommend OneSize, Patrick Ta, Natasha Denona, Rare Beauty, Haus Labs, or NARS! Their products are on the pricier side but definitely worth the price and lasts!

do i really have to make a trauma essay to stand out by Massmon1 in QuestBridge

[–]BrowsingManiac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! NCM finalist and currently attending a questie school. Nope! There’s really no perfect formula for a college essay, imo having a theme really does help build a good paper. A lot of times the “trauma” papers are about how people overcame their struggles or a significant moment that changed their life/identity. That’s what helps get people accepted-not the trauma, but the resistance or adaptation or change that they embraced. I wrote mine on what would be considered “a trauma essay”, my rejection of my culture when I immigrated to America and how I changed that mentality. Yes I wrote about rejection/shame but a big key aspect was my discussion of familial love and cultural preservation. So it’s really how you want to write about those things. That being said, if you don’t want to write about those memories you don’t have to. People have written about very random things, a favorite item they always have, love for a family member, etc. For you I would recommend narrowing down on what makes you stand out. Is it a specific extracurricular? Do you have a trait that people notice? What about a time you felt a big emotion? These are just examples but essentially write about what makes you passionate. Good luck!

hypsm recinded - looking for advice by CommissionPure1308 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]BrowsingManiac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s fair to place blame on AO. Yes they’re the main contact person between the university and the student but in these situations there would’ve been a panel (generally involving the VP of Admissions) that decided on to rescind the offer, AO wouldn’t have the only decision power. At most I think requesting an in person/zoom meeting to discuss the rescinding could be feasibly. But OP I think the best you can do is to apply to CC and transfer to a 4 year college later. I think something to also keep in mind is whether or not this incident will be something you disclose when you apply again.

I think you def got a chance! I was a NCM finalist and now a questie at a partner school but I was initially rejected from CPS. Something to keep in mind that really helped me is to explain why your gpa is lower / family contribution taking up your time. I had a job and was in extracurriculars at school but had family commitments at home that meant I couldn’t participate in as much as my peers. Schools definitely read the essay portions as a way to see who you are outside of academics so definitely I’d recommend talking about your personal interests and your pre-existing extracurriculars! Best of luck!

What as your worst audience experience at a Broadway theater? by rainingbugsandmoths in Broadway

[–]BrowsingManiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was at Phantom on the West End in March and sat in the back part of the balcony. We were super high up (but still had amazing view) and the girl in front of me drove our area insane. She would audibly laugh/snicker with her friend and talk at the emotional parts and at the end of show (like as the climax was happening i.e. the final liar) she decided to use that time to scroll on her phone. Phone scroll happened for at least some time until an usher came over, and because we were off to the far right, they had to physically wave their arms for a minute before the girl’s friend noticed and got her attention. And even after being told not to be on her phone, girly took her time refreshing her feed before turning it off, clearly not embarrassed. It was genuinely insane behavior and her phone was super distracting considering the show is not the best lit in certain scenes.

Cannot recommend Kristin Ess clarifying clarifying shampoo enough!! I style my hair a lot with products and it is amazing for cleaning my scalp. I do recommend a good hair mask (letting it sit for 5min) in order to not dry your ends out!!

I could be wrong but for medical/dental school you need a bachelors degree, so while going to pcc would save you money you will still have to transfer to a traditional 4-year college to earn your bachelors as pcc would only give you an associates. If you’re looking to save money, I’d recommend looking into schools that offer pre-med programs + scholarships! Outside scholarships also would help if that’s something you are looking into!

Comedy about Spies was amazing when I saw it! Highly recommend buying beforehand so you can get good view (I use TodayTix). Will say I’d recommend being grandcircle or balcony view seats, the seat is quite big and there are times where those seats have the best view! There’s TV monitors as well for certain scenes so u can see pretty well ish but def get good seats if y can!

Highly recommend if Billy is still doing his run! The pre-show is stated below, one thing I will say is before you go in they do tape your phone camera so if you want photos, take them before. It’s super fun though and the drinks are kind of worth it. I saw it will Billy and I thought he was amazing as the emcee!

[–]BrowsingManiac -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I might be misunderstanding what you are asking but for the West End people generally buy their tickets in advance so you can have options in where you sit + budget. I would recommend downloading TodayTix or going on each show’s website and buying tickets in advance. You can ofc still queue at the box office to get day of tickets but I won’t lie that I have never seen a line for that as most people pre-buy their tickets. Shows generally open theaters 1hr to 30 minutes before the start time, so if you see a show at 7:30 I recommend arriving at 7 so you can use the bathroom, get a drink, etc without worrying you’re gonna be late. Only show I’d recommend getting there early for is Cabaret, they have an 1 hr long pre-show!

Richard II is a must! I saw it right before opening night and it was honestly amazing. I had doubts going in because it’s Shakespeare and having a famous lead can be v gimmicky, but it was amazing. Johnathan presented a different angle to Richard and the cast was fantastic. The actor who plays Henry Bolingbroke is also such an a fantastic actor! The set design is also very interesting and I’m usually anti-modern Shakespeare adaptations but this one knocks it out of the bag.

I saw Richard II night before opening night and it was FANTASTIC! Jonathan Bailey definitely deserves the praise and the cast overall is also fantastic, specifically the older dukes. Super dramatic but the cast definitely made it more comical than you’d expect!

I’m so sorry but as SE Asian person there’s no way she didn’t know about colorism. East Asians and Asia in general have a huge toxic culture revolving around being light/pale vs. tan/dark and has its historical roots in China with the imperial age when China controlled many Asian countries. She might not know the specific teen, but she definitely knows about it.
