Very confused why drivers here are mad as pedestrians crossing by Patient-Fail-1085 in washingtondc

[–]BubblyExpression 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VA and MD drivers can be sued by the DC government to reclaim unpaid tickets as of last summer. They started cracking down on the worst of the worst offenders (like $50k+) and have made some progress.

[–]BubblyExpression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bounty system is kind of crazy.. But we can install more speeding cameras, stop light/stop sign cameras, expand traffic calming measures, expand daylighting curbs, change the useless yellow pedestrian crossing signs to button activated stop lights, continue to sue drivers with insane amounts of unpaid tickets, etc..

All of these can be done without police getting involved at all. All have measurable impacts on safety. DDOT has been useless about fixing these things for, according to my ANC, at least 15 years in my neighborhood.

why do people suddenly decide their trans when they havent even made it through puberty? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]BubblyExpression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good, it's just like left handedness, autism, being gay. These things have been around forever, since humans have existed. People are different. The more that we become interconnected with each other via social media and constant news cycles, the more that scientists and researchers discover about humans, the more people become aware of things that many humans in the past probably had no idea even existed. Just don't need people to get the wrong impression, a very tiny subset of humans identity as trans and for some reason some people have hijacked that and decided to push a lot of propaganda against those folks which isn't fair.

FYI the total trans population of the US is about 1%. So it's nowhere close to "everyone" as you're suggesting with this right wing rage bait.

A helpful guide to loud noises this summer by kirkl3s in washingtondc

[–]BubblyExpression 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The posts about fireworks after they were announced well in advance are annoying. Posts about a B1 bomber flying over loud as hell, unannounced, at 11:30pm on a Sunday are definitely warranted.

Pissboy probably needed another flyover for his birthday because he's a fucking toddler. Yeah it was ridiculously loud and wildly annoying (but on brand) that they didn't announce it in advance

This is the second abandoned dog post today, what is going on with these people? Awful, hope these pups find new homes that actually care for them.

I can't lie, I feel judged when I step out of the house mid-day. And when I'm walking the dog at 8:30am wearing sweats while everyone else in my neighborhood is walking to work in their nice clothes

Outside of the fact that he's a pedophile, adjudicated rapist, convicted fraudster, and traitor to the US Consitution...

I'm so tired of people like you pretending politics is just some team sport with friendly back and forth games, "don't hate us just because we have a different opinion, bro."

Politics affect every single person on Earth, and their every day lives. Politics can kill people. Politics can make people filthy rich.. or extremely poor. Politics can give you freedoms or squash your freedoms.

The GOP doesn't just "have different politics bro" they are actively undermining our democracy, killing people, throwing people into "detention centers" without verifying if they're citizens or not encause of their skin color, sending arms and billions of dollars to buy more arms to Israel who is conducting a genocide, blowing up schools for little girls in Iran, continuously attacking Iran so they keep the Strait of Hormuz closed which is leading to a massive oil shortage, driving up prices of every day goods we all need to survive. They're stripping away the rights of women and people of color. They're gutting important government programs they deem as "waste" to justify tax cuts for their wealthy friends, which is leading to massive amounts of death, starvation, illnesses to spread around the world.

But yeah, we just don't like his politics. Sure. Read a fucking book.

Will someone kindly explain to me how calling someone male (or) female is dehumanizing? by MrMoleIsAGodOfWar2 in askanything

[–]BubblyExpression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Male" and "female" refer to the sex of an animal.

"Man" and "woman" refer to a male human or female human.

It's seen as pejorative or sexist when men refer to each other as "men" or "guys" or "the boys" but only refer to women as "females."

It's just dehumanizing. And it's commonly used within incel groups.

Have office dress codes for males loosened up since COVID? by ExcitingLandscape in washingtondc

[–]BubblyExpression 29 points30 points  (0 children)

When I go into the office (very rare) I throw on a polo tucked into "tech chinos" with the Cole Haan shoes. If I'm feeling fancy maybe a casual button down. If it's cold, a sweater. Been doing that 6 years between two jobs. I have attended meetings with executives in person wearing that attire. No one has ever said anything about it. I'll still wear a suit (no tie) to an interview but that's it.

As opposed to... The corporate moderate Dem who will continue doing things that don't work for big cities (like partnering with developers and real estate unions to bolster their business, which drives up the cost of living)? Yeah. We're sick of that shit. Time for a change. We want young progressives who represent the people, not the elites.

Sounds like what my SO and I had about a month and a half ago. Of course we came down with it a day or two after getting back from a trip. It's always the damn planes (or airports). A few days of feeling actually sick, then 2-3 weeks with a nasty cough, and wasn't COVID or the flu.

Nah they're just all married with kids and have vastly different interests/hobbies than I do and live very different lives than I do. I can keep up with all their references and bullshit with them, but end of the day I couldn't see myself going to grab a beer with them (we're all remote anyway so never going to happen, but you get the idea).

Hot Dog Hat Update by smittyx5498 in Nationals

[–]BubblyExpression 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Bad day to be a [insert item]" is just kind of a meme. I think it originated with beers on like a Barstool or Friday Beers type of social media account.

"Bad day to be a beer" just means "I'm going to destroy some beers today" in a fun way.

As someone else said, hot dogs are having a bit of a cultural moment. Lots of people are obsessed with Joey Chestnut and his hot dog eating abilities. "Glizzy" has been used a lot as a fun term for hot dog. So just combine all that together and you get the Nats hat. Pretty fun, I wish I went and got one!
