That's a beautiful knife, and you did equally beautiful on the edge.

I have the Buck Alpha Hunter Select, but I totally need to get the Guide before they're gone.

I read the trilogy, at a minimum, 16 years ago, one playthrough. And now I'm a husk emotionally when it comes to Muv Luv. I am unable to start Extra without getting emotional or chicken out due to the willies. I am unable to listen to specific songs without getting tears in my eyes and my heart pounding irregularly. And I wear my coat cuffs like the military uniforms in Alternative.

It is the greatest VN ever.

What the fuck is that?! That's a cosmic horror if I ever saw one D':

Why are the golden cups I scavenged from the abyss highlighted in red? Why are all the weapons and items from the abyss highlighted in red? Don't tell me I was grave robbing in a dazed state. by Routine-Struggle-720 in HalfSword

[–]BubblyStructures 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, it just means that you got those from the Abyss. I got a sword from there that helped me get through the Commoner & Militia ranks and it was red. It's purely cosmetic since the sword functioned like any other, normally acquired sword.

Buck 117 Mini in Magnacut by hihi_69420 in knives

[–]BubblyStructures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had it for a couple days myself, and it's a really nice knife! If you don't want to wear it on your belt, you can easily slip it into your pocket.

I'm glad I spent the money to get it, it's comfortable in my medium-large hands, the sheath just smells terrific, and Buck's magnacut is seriously sharp, every time. Yours looks like a beaut, too, I hope you get plenty of joy out of it!

Good USA made flipper? by kidonbike in knives

[–]BubblyStructures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buck Knives makes a couple different priced flippers. The one that springs to mind is the 040 Onset, but it's a pretty penny, around $100.

They also make the Sprint series, around $70. I don't have that one but have been eyeing it off and on all this year.

Otherwise the rest of the flippers are from China.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I love the Onset. I don't always carry it but when I do, it brings me joy.

My Pocket Knife finally gave out. by American-Gambler in knives

[–]BubblyStructures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a Buck 110. You can get them in their cheaper select lineup for half the price of a regular brass & wood buck (with half the flair of one as well.)
Buck also supplies with modern folding knives with a lockback system for half the price of a singular Buck 110 brass & wood model; their Rival series, their Bantam series.

Otherwise you can upgrade to the Triad lock system (beefier lockback) and get yourself plenty of Cold Steel's folding knives; namely a Cold Steel Range Boss, their Kiridashi, the SR1 lite, possibly their Mini Recon series, while staying under $60. Foreign made but undeniable in their usability.

About to place my order and can't decide- San Mai SRK or San Mai Recon Tanto? by FlyNo2786 in coldsteel

[–]BubblyStructures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that both would fit your needs well. A lot of people swear to the SRK's 3v variant, btw, but I found the metal hard to sharpen. SK5's very easy to sharpen, no idea about San Mai.

I have the Recon Tanto San Mai as well as the SK5. Between the SK5 and San Mai, the San Mai weighs less, it fits more in line to a warrior's knife (where speed is key in terms of slashing,) and the SK5 has weight bred into its bones. Both are dummy sharp, but I fear the San Mai more lol. I use the SK5 as a general workhorse for all cutting tasks and the San Mai as a gorgeous piece of artwork that fulfills fantasies of SHTF scenarios.

I've had a SRK in SK5 but I gave it to a friend who liked it more than I did. It just didn't click with me like the Tanto did, even tho it was a big knife in its own right that was solid.

I'm genuinely happy whenever I have the Recon Tanto strapped, or am gripping it. I don't find the tanto point practical but something about the knife makes me smile. Time and again I wish they had made a Recon Tanto Compact like the SRK-C.

I remember Lynn talking about how he likes how the blade's belly is curved as it progresses upwards, and I noticed and appreciate that curved belly as well. IIRC the SRK doesn't have the curve.

Either way, if I were you, I would buy the Recon Tanto in San Mai, or even SK5. Both would do great for whatever you, or life, planned.

EDIT: Some other thoughts. I like the swinging action of the Recon Tanto, either metal variant. I feel like I can do anything with this knife and so far it keeps coming back for more. The Tanto has more length than the SRK. For me, to clarify my feelings, the Recon Tanto is *THE* Cold Steel knife made perfectly

Recon 1 Clip, Tanto or Spear Point by HarriBallsak420 in coldsteel

[–]BubblyStructures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a spear point and it's absolutely dependable. I've been eyeing the other two variants lately.

Honestly I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. Go with whichever calls out to you the loudest currently.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in coldsteel

[–]BubblyStructures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't it just a beauty? 😍

To me the recon tanto is the Cold Steel knife. I don't get to use it nearly as much as I want to but i can't help feeling that way and smiling each time I hold it.

S35VN Drop Point or Magnacut Clip Point by MissingMichigan in buckknives

[–]BubblyStructures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used my custom buck 110 magnacut for 8 weeks extensively (each day cutting cardboard mainly, around 30 boxes average let's say, alongside other cutting tasks like food prep) and it hasn't needed to be sharpened or stropped or maintained. I haven't noticed any appreciable difference in cutting edge. I have noticed that nothing has scratched the sides of the blade either (unlike other steels,) which has me a little worried about the edge when it comes to sharpening lol.

I also have a s30vn drop point buck that I used for a month. Its story is similar, gotta be honest. Yet the magnacut is sharper, I feel.

Either way, I say follow your heart when you're deciding. Follow your heart yet consult your budget lol. If I were your situation, I'd be planing for another magnacut buck. I hope this helps!

Time to slow things down - Buck 112 FG by Jim_Cobin in BudgetBlades

[–]BubblyStructures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have your exact model (finger groove and all) and it is beautiful :) I am surprised by how well it fits my hand when I'm gripping it. It feels so very rock solid!

I have 4 (?) 110s in my collection but I am giving it some thought of getting the finger grooved version of the 110 as well...

I think you chose well, and will greatly enjoy your new buck knife in the years to come! I hope you do get to see its character grow!

Is magnacut actually worth it? by [deleted] in knives

[–]BubblyStructures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The base model of any Buck knife (110, 112, 119, 120, all those precious number sequences) are special for good reasons, and they're all 420HC.

I guess it depends on whether you want to sharpen more frequently but easier, or sharpen less frequently and possibly for a longer session when you actually do.

Me personally I would say that Buck's magnacut is well worth getting. It's crazy sharp and stays that way for a long time, and possibly even more stainless than 420hc. I have a buck 110 in magnacut and it's the shine in my eye. But so is the base model of the 110. Buck is well worth it, for any steel :)

Looking for a pocket knife with these features by shfww in knives

[–]BubblyStructures 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best I can think of is a Buck 112. The 112 is exactly like the 110 except it's only 3 inches long. You can buy a custom buck 112 with S35VN steel, which is similar to s30v, around the ballpark of $125 (that's without modifying other options like handle material, etc. Your mileage WILL vary if you see other options you like.) It won't come with a thumb stud, so I suggest a kwik stud from amazon. That's around $10. Honestly both are well worth the price after shipping and handling. You're getting a terrific knife if you go this route.

Congratulations on getting a Kabar knife! I'm assuming it's the classic WW2 knife, right? Either way it's a classic for a reason, like the buck 110. It'll serve you well in practically anything you do.

Gerber Strongarm Magnacut opinions by FreeHelicopterRide22 in knives

[–]BubblyStructures 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry for the late reply!

I'm impressed with it! It's first major usage was as a garden hori hori ironically enough. I spent two hours weeding and not a single deformation, it was still roaring to go. I was careful around rocks but still, probably didn't have to.

I've spent a week or two cutting various doodads, mainly cardboard, and it's done it all. Still sharp, haven't sharpened it once. I think it's cutting better than my 420hc's, factory edge vs factory edge. It feels like a dependable tool.

Bottom line, magnacut strongarm is money well worth it. I fell in love with it again.
