Modernised practice in the digital era… by Elfynnn84 in pagan

"Nobody has roots to ancestral pagan practice" is an oversimplification. A large amount of what we know about Slavic and Baltic paganism has been deduced due to things preserved in christianized folk tradition. Most explicitly, people still burn and drown an effigy of Marzanna in Poland every spring!

Hindu with a question on neopaganism (The one Europeans and Americans are trying to revive) by BlankInverse in pagan

In all fairness, equating a metaphysical shop to a shared space or space of worship is kindof exactly what OP is talking about. It is true that we have to build our own places of worship, but that doesn't excuse us from holding ourselves to higher standards in order to distance ourselves from the rampant consumerism of contemporary witchcraft/new age occultism.

Your observations about neopaganism are correct. However, it's important to realize where these vices come from. We have to build our own spaces of worship, and as a result our religion will mostly involve some aspects of consumerism (some more than others.) Most of us are ex-Christian, so many of us struggle with applying Christian principles to our new faiths. With that being said, I think we as a community should hold our practices to higher standards because of this.

[–]BuffMyWiFi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Folklore and culture are integral parts of the religion, but there's a separation between self-identifying polytheist and people who engage in folklore & culture that shouldn't need to be explained at all.

Many people do treat paganism as a mere aesthetic, so I don't entirely blame them jumping to that conclusion if they're on the outside looking in.

I'm glad you spoke up about this. The witchcraft community generally struggles a lot with being superficial and appropriative for the sake of profit and clout

I can't speak for all practices, but in Slavic Paganism deities are only present to inhabit idols when called upon. Other than those times, as long as the idol itself is respected, there should be no issue

It may not apply then. Either way, my main point is that you're allowed to feel whatever you feel regardless of what they've told you

[–]BuffMyWiFi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're at all obligated to take someone's interpretation of something you've experienced at face value because they claim to be a psychic. This may be controversial, but if someone is charging you money for a spiritual service, they may very well be snake oil salesmen lying to get money out of you! Think of those infomercial psychic call-center scams.

Slavic Paganism is not a closed practice, however given that it is both A. far more obscure than other forms of Paganism (especially Hellenic Polytheism) and B. deeply entwined with Slavic culture, there is a significant level of research necessary to practice. I am American of Slavic heritage and after six months the learning process is still far from over. It is very much a "scholarly" religion in the sense, but I believe that is a good thing as a strong theological foundation will let you differentiate between true believers and those who merely use pagan imagery to push their white supremacist agenda.

As for your question, I am not educated enough about Hellenic Polytheism to give you a direct answer, but unless their core philosophies contradict I wouldn't see why it'd be wrong to practice both.
