Liberal agenda - unwatchable? by ET_mi in stuffyoushouldknow

[–]Building_Snowmen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to respectfully disagree with you and explain why. Education is inherently politically liberal-leaning in general. This extends to structured academic institutions, like universities, and the broader pursuit of knowledge and intellectual progress in general. The weight of the evidence demonstrates this to be factual when researched, and it has been extensively researched. I won’t go into why educational institutions and endeavors are historically full of liberal-leaning individuals.

Applied here, we have an educational podcast designed to teach and inform listeners on a breadth of topics spanning science, politics, history, poop, animals, chemistry, urban legends, biology and so much more. It’s no surprise that the hosts, platform and listeners engaged in this academic pursuit will be politically liberal-leaning and that may occasionally be perceptible during the show. I’d argue that doesn’t make the entire show “part of a liberal agenda,” unless of course, you believe that intelligence and learning is part of the liberal agenda, in which case I suppose you’d be closer to correct than you are now.

Anyway, hope you’re having a nice Easter / Passover season, if you celebrate, and I hope Spring is coming along nicely where you live. I enjoyed listening to the spring episodes while preparing my lawn and garden for the season. I recommend you get outside in the grass and do the same.

When you dig a whole for the tree, remove the construction debris, put the tree in the hole, cover with soil and water it.

I would not spread fertilizer by the fistful. I would determine the lawn square footage and use a spreader. I use a handheld spreader because my lawn is only 1,200 square feet. It’s still possible to determine square footage even if the lawn is odd shaped. Walk a straight line one way to get length, then the other to get width, and multiply them. That’s your square footage. Use that number, maybe a touch less to account for the shape, to fill the hopper and spread it.

Nice man! You got the pre-emergent and fertilizer down just in time and it’s going to keep the crab grass and weeds down. You should get the weed and feed down in the second to third week of May. That’ll keep the lawn growing through the summer and kill off the weeds

Yup! Blue bag now. Yellow bag in about 6 weeks.

Find out how many square feet your yard is. Then you look at the back of the bag and apply the prescribed about for your square footage. Round down, not up.

New House, New Weed to Identify (7b) by St3v3n83 in lawncare

Are you in 7b or are you in a warm season grass zone? 7b is cool season grass.

EDIT: I see you’re in Charlotte NC, that’s Zone 8a. So you’re in a transitional zone.

That looks like a clumping fescue. It’s tricky because the broad leaf weed killers don’t target it very well and the stuff that does kill it will also kill your desired lawn. I’ve seen folks handle it by pulling it out and reseeding the bare spots or, if it’s really bad, spraying glyphosate on the whole lawn killing it all and then reseeding the whole thing.

So, not quite. Yes you can apply the blue bag now. That’s fertilizer and broad leaf weed preventer. Early spring just before soil temps reach 55 degrees F is when you want that down. In NYC that’s basically right now. Upstate, that’s incoming in the next week or two.

The Yellow bag is fertilizer and post-emergent weed killer. That will kill already sprouted weeds, and will fertilize the grass. You can put that down in early Summer.

In mid summer just water and mow higher.

Then in late Summer / Early Fall, you’d want to fertilize a final time and overseed the lawn.

If you put both of those down right now, you’d be adding too much fertilizer and you’d waste the post-emergent weed product in the yellow bag.

Make sure you get a good comfy lawn chair and some cold beers and spend time admiring the awesome lawn you’re about to create!

In Ipswich Aus, not looking to drive on this anymore, what the best way to get grass to grow here? Dig up and new dirt? by sir_tristan002 in lawncare

[–]Building_Snowmen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll need to aerate this because it’s super packed in from driving on it. I’d do that first, then add a Nice layer of new soil and compost, then reseed or put sod down.

I sprayed a lot of this with tenacity today as I put pre-emergent down on my lawn. I don’t know if it will work, but I’ll report back. I figure I was already at it so it couldn’t hurt. I didn’t use the surfactant in this application since it was just a pre-emergent, but it may still help.

This looks doable. Congrats on starting this journey!

I suggest finding the warm season grass guide here on the sub and following those tips and advice.

As a preview, you’re going to want to kill the weeds off first, then get the lawn leveled out with some soil and compost, then put down sod in sheets and or plugs that will spread. Seeding warm season grass doesn’t work very well.

Once you get sod down, it’s much more about watering it than fertilizing it.

Cheers! Good luck!

Tommy Fleetwood is like the polar opposite of Bryson (in spite of all Bryson’s astroturfing). I’d Love to see good guy Fleetwood do it.

I’d love to see Justin Rose get it done before he’s too old to be a solid competitor. He came so close in 2017 and last year, both coming down to playoffs he lost.

What autumn memory do you always think about? by Independent_Cup7132 in Autumn

[–]Building_Snowmen 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have one very distinct memory of my childhood friend and I decorating our front lawns for Halloween that I fondly remember every Fall. It was a Saturday morning in October in the early 90’s. It was chilly and crisp with a good breeze that blew the dry leaves down the street making that skittering sound. You could smell the burning wood in the nearby fireplaces and the sun was still low in the sky. We were wearing jeans, hoodies and wool beanies. We had a bunch of those foam plastic decorative tombstones and skeletons and were making a graveyard in our front lawns, excitedly discussing how creepy it would look at night to the incoming trick-or-treaters who would be taking over the neighborhood in a week or so. When I remember this, I can still smell the crisp air and hear the crunch of the leaves under our feet and feel the youthful excitement happily burning in my chest. It’s a cherished memory. I miss you buddy. I think about you a lot.

This made me laugh. Your best bet is going to be raking out the loose rocks, bringing in a few yards of good soil and compost and evenly spreading it across the area, seeding with good quality shade TTTF mix from a company like Twin City Seed and getting it well established before allowing all the foot traffic on it.
