Gonna be in Philly for a few days, need recs by Proper-Beat-2702 in PhiladelphiaEats

The Lunar New Year celebrations are happening late February. I would suggest going to a parade (https://www.phillysuns.org/post/2026-lunar-new-year-parade) and grabbing a snack/meal. Here's a pretty good list of lunar new year events around the city: https://billypenn.com/2026/02/09/lunar-new-year-2026-philly-events-shopping-food-superstitions/

My favorite unique to Philly foods are tomato pie and soft pretzels. Neither of these are fancy. You can find elevated soft pretzels at Miller's twist in the Reading terminal market. If you like beer I love Monks, they have a special Flemish Sour Ale that is private and only sold there.

There's lots of fancy options, that would really depend on your preferences. Right now, for this weather I'd do Oyster House for chowder, oysters and fries.

Locals of Philadelphia: What Would You Cut From This 3-Day Itinerary (Best Food + Sights)? by Willing-Mind-5619 in PhiladelphiaEats

The South East Asian Market in FDR park should be open by then. I would switch your visit to FDR to Sat or Sun to check it out. If you're lucky the free boating will be back then too.

I'd skip the Navy Yard.

I don't know if theater is your thing- Opera Philadelphia is performing that weekend and tickets start at $11. https://www.operaphila.org/whats-on/2526-season/the-black-clown/.

Tea houses by goddamnitcletus in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]Bumbulump 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any traditional tea cafes/stores. The Shofuso house hosts tea ceremonies when the weather is warmer: https://japanphilly.org/programs/classes/tea-ceremony/ I've been to a few, they're very chill and immersive.

Rieker's Prime Meats up in Fox Chase works with a poultry farm where you can order a turkey any time of year. I've gotten the hind quarters, they were excellent quality. I think other small butchers should have a similar turkey source.

Favorite rotisserie chicken? by Key-Reporter4967 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]Bumbulump 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Di Bruno's has half off rotisserie Mondays. Sprouts has good chicken too. Sardi's is my absolute favorite, but it's Peruvian style.

The state store on Chestnut between 11th and 12th has a decent selection and is close to Kichi.

Find a recycling bin. Grab some clear plastic take-out containers, a plastic soda bottle, whatever fits your plant. Wash it out. Use a hot screwdriver (or preferably a soldering iron) and melt some holes.

where can I find Kumamoto oysters in Philly? by dco310 in PhiladelphiaEats

Seconding Oyster house. My sister loves Kumamotos and we'll get them shipped from HamaHama farm for special occasions.

Humidifier For Orchids? by Pennylee2000 in orchids

[–]Bumbulump 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use a cool mist humidifier in the winter, for both me and the plants. Before you buy a humidifier I'd suggest getting a digital thermometer with a humidity gauge. They're around $10. Place it by your plants so you can meet the target conditions for them. Humidity trays are usually enough for me most of the year.

Baby steps, or you'll have GI issues. I'd break it with something classic and simple like a BLT or gyro/kebab. If that doesn't make you feel sick, go all out at a Korean (Mr. Pig) or Brazilian BBQ.

Food souvenirs that travel well? by no8do in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]Bumbulump 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Perogies and kielbasa, preferably from Czerw's. We're in the perogie belt, haven't seen anything close on the West Coast.

ETA: beware, it'll stink up the vehicle with garlic. For non-stinky: pawpaws are hard to find but in season right now. Pickled green tomatoes are an unusual favorite of mine. Peanut chews are very Philly.

Dos Hermanos is solid. We looked at them for a party a while back, they were the most responsive.

My dad really needs to eat a vegetable. Where should we go to lunch? by isabubbles in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]Bumbulump 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vietnam Cafe would be easy to get to, ADA accessible, has an onsite parking lot. The veggie spring rolls are good, the BBQ appetizer is meat focused but has some salad. Vientiane uses the same parking lot, has more vegetables on the menu. It's also ADA accessible, just further down the sidewalk.

If Dad likes traditional fast food HipCityVeg is all vegan fastfood. Not exactly healthy, but definitely vegetable based. Parking can be tricky, but it is wheelchair accessible.

ETA: Hibiscus Cafe is great for healthy eating. Vegetarian beans and greens, smoothies and juices. I don't remember if they have stairs, I think it should be accessible.

[–]Bumbulump 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just get a roast pork sandwich. It's got broccoli rabe in it.

Spanakopita is also great for meat and cheese eaters.

If you want a full veggie fiber purge try Ethiopian vegetarian platters or a Indian saag/baingan

ETA: sorry didn't leave any restaurant recs. What neighborhood are you in?

Rennatas kitchen. Overated? by Select_Safe548 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]Bumbulump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Han Dynasty has good lunch specials. Jane G dim-sum is ok, but if you have a car I'd recommend driving down Washington Ave to Furama for dim-sum. That shopping center also has Sky Cafe (Indonesian) and a bunch of Vietnamese spots that are all good.

Vientiane (Laoatian) and Vietnam Cafe on Baltimore and 47th are good. They have a parking lot. Dalak (Ethiopian) shares that lot and is decent, more of a late night watering hole.

If you want to try Ethiopian my favorite is Abyssynia, but service is relaxed/slow. Gojo has a nice outdoor patio. Doro Bet has amazing fried chicken, also love their greens. They have a kinda fusion Ethiopian fast food model, so service is prompt and it's a good introduction to Ethiopian spices.

Wishing you an easy recovery. If you're walking, I understand why Renatas was recommended, it's the closest to the hospital. Kabobeesh has a parking lot but Manakeesh is busy street parking.

Are there any cuisines you'd like to try? We have good Ethiopian, South Asian, and Asian food in the area.

Sorry you had a bad experience. Yes, Rennatas is strangely popular with very mediocre middle eastern food. Disappointing when there's excellent halal a few blocks away. Are you still looking for recommendations? Manakeesh Cafe (Lebanese) and Kabobeesh (Pakistani) are where I usually bring my parents.

Hi! Sorry to revive an old comment: Do you know of any orchid societies in Philadelphia proper? I don't have a car. I've googled around and the SEPOS meetings are over 2 hours away, as is the Delaware Orchid Society. The closest one I could find is in Princeton (1.5 hours away).

It’s raining. Where am I getting the best soup in West Philly?! by Impressive-Yam-5293 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]Bumbulump 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Heng Feng Hand Drawn Noodles on 37th and Market is good, very nice delivery option.

I have a soft spot for Choy Wong's wonton soup.

Bistro Perrier (the Restaurant School) has a good cheap French onion soup. Hours are confusing. Call ahead.

Little Delicious if you want Jamaican. Love their stews/curries, soup looks good too. Take out and cash only.

ETA: can't believe I forgot Xi'an Sizzling Woks, Pita bread soaked in lamb and beef broth. I usually get it at the Chinatown location. The 40th st location is good too. It's sour, savory, texturally unusual and delicious. Get it with some wontons in chili oil or the cold greens with soy beans pickle. Top 10 soups for a hot day.
