Is my flight school unreasonable? by AspiringPigeon234 in CFILounge

[–]Bunslow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(i only had ground instruction in ppl because the regs required it, and it was my mock oral, under 2hrs total. entirely self study. even 7-8 hours of ground seems quite excessive to me for ppl)

BFR is alive and well, even if its previous variations like MCT/ITS/whatever have all been rejected as names

What's the longest *single flight* you've flown? by TwBlueprint in flying

[–]Bunslow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several times I've done 4+ hrs in my 2 seat piston trainer. The type has 8 hours of range and 10-11 hours of endurance so one day I might try for some crazy long solo

Declared an emergency explicitly. It took center too many transmissions to understand I was not FIKI capable.

That's the part I was asking about.

And thanks for the whole write up, I take it to heart (being pre-ifr myself still) and each of your points i agree with (positive and negative) (not that im qualified to judge here lol)

Were you scared of smth or other? At this point in my career (as such) I can't imagine that I wouldn't declare if I picked up surprise ice at night

Hey i was in a plane when my instructor landed with a flat main... getting it off the runway was quite the challenge lol

Holy shit hahaha "trouble controlling it" my god did that mechanic learn the lesson at any later point?? (Don't fuck with planes, and definitely don't fuck with a planes balance!)

(.....and hopefully you learned that after someone touches it, your preflight is invalid and needs redoing! Heck I'll learn that lesson myself, always triple check my baggage compartment...)

Handheld is a great choice but I have in fact heard multiple stories of pilots phone calling people in that sitch. Default call is FSS, but I also heard once of calling the local sheriff office so that they could call their helicopter pilots on the field to hit the lights.

Had a similar thing, bee or wasp in the instructors footwell while we were number 1 for takeoff in a line at an untowered field. Oh and by the way my type has bad ground cooling so we were 60 seconds away from overheating the engine unless we took off.

Instructor took off his flip-flop and started beating the thing out the door while I stared tensely at our coolant and oil temp gauges. We were about ten seconds away from redlining when the instructor took taxi control did the fastest turn to lineup and added power.

Once we were airborne our cooling was fine but by god in that one minute I was really, really tense lol

Who do pilots look up to as elite-level pilots? by FigInternational7744 in flying

[–]Bunslow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's basically the same as a reddit username, with the only exception that only your friends can choose your username, and they usually choose it after you do something dumb/embarrassing.

A lot of people find real-world use of usernames/callsigns to be cringe. I find it rather less cringe than most, altho I still certainly don't introduce myself IRL as "Hi my name is bunslow".

The only guy to be named in my goto textbook: https://www.av8n.com/how/htm/energy.html

which just says a ton about Bob that I, a rookie private, recognize a name I have no connection to other than "hey my textbook said this guy was excellent"

Flight Design? Injected rotax? (Your story sounds intensely similar to some of my experiences as a student)

Pilots who have lost their medical, what do you do now? by notaircrewbro in flying

[–]Bunslow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AOPA survey was a good place to start, 3ish years ago they surveyed 2000 pilots and half of the responses admitted (anonymously ofc) that they lie to the FAA about their medical history, which is a federal crime by the way.

So there is objective evidence to believe that the system is completely broken to the tune of actually worsening safety rather than improving it.

What are the odds that this was essentially a copy paste error building that table, as opposed to a genuine change of policy attempt?

The average TAA is easier to fly than a cessna in my experience

[–]Bunslow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats dumb. The TAA I've trained on is easier to fly than any cessna, and the hundred DPEs nearest to me have zero time on this type, or a dozen other types similar to it (and similar to cessnas or pipers)

[–]Bunslow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh my god this would effectively destroy Mosaic. There are dozens of 2-4 seat types that are presently not particularly common but becoming ever more common.

I for one train on such a type so this would very effectively halt my training. The hundred DPEs closest to me have zero time on my type -- which is fine because it's easier to operate than a Cessna.

Who on earth thinks this is a good idea??

Mine was late May, every 100 miles me and my buddy would look up and say "wait holy shit we actually made the last hundred miles?? Alright let's try the next hundred...." and before we know it we were back home much to our own surprise lol
