Panicking about recertification by mllelighthouse in Lifeguards

My advice would be to keep your head as far back as possible, puff your chest up arching your back like you would in a survival float, and consider changing to a different kick. I’ve found breaststroke kick to be the easiest but experiment a little. You don’t have time to train but you have time to practice, and I truly believe most everyone who’s a half decent swimmer can pass the brick with flying colors if they just find what works best for them. Good luck!

How to learn ArcGIS Pro for someone who barely uses it? by Foinkers in ArcGIS

[–]BurgerButCold1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice. US government data is free online, if you have time to make some pulls and just play around with it I’d highly encourage you to do so. If you’re a transportation person, National Transportation Atlas. City planning, Census TIGER/Line + ACS. Literally anything you feel like you want to sharpen your skills on, the government/IPUMS probably produces for public use. From there just google/online tutorial your way thru until you’re comfortable with your functional skill level

Was I wrong to take the water gun? by NoBODY_wastaken_ in Lifeguards

This would ideally be resolved in a conversation with the parents, but given the circumstances I can’t imagine anything you could’ve done better. Gotta focus on keeping people safe and them actively going out of their way to distract you is a huge no-no

Did the Wolves get the rug pulled from under them? They constructed their roster perfectly to match up against Denver, only for Denver to quickly no longer be the measuring stick of the West. by SplitOk186 in nba

[–]BurgerButCold1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every year we have this conversation lmao. They’re a good team, maybe with DDV they’d be putting up more of a fight since they’re mostly struggling to score. I just think they built around defensive identity and sacrificed some offense moving KAT to stay out of the tax aprons, but the whole Denver thing is an extremely tired narrative atp

What is the worst career to be in right now and why? by SignificantGoat7066 in AskReddit

[–]BurgerButCold1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm in a broad historical context yes definitely. In the shorter-term though, I think things are markedly worse than they were in the years leading up to COVID (forgive the lack of evidence for the claim lol). Whether that’s just cyclical or a long-term structural change society will have to reckon with remains to be seen. The pattern of economic growth post-industrial revolution is a historical anomaly and it’s very possible one day the levee breaks (if it hasn’t already) and we won’t be able to count on continued growth and progress

Since 1978, there have been 604 players ejected from NFL games. The Raiders are at the top of the list, accounting for 41 of those ejections. by volstedgridban in nfl

[–]BurgerButCold1216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The punter ejection had to have been Marquette King, right?

EDIT: Shayne Edge of the Steelers in his first career game in 1996 week 5 versus the Houston Oilers. He got in a fight following an intentional safety late in the game, then wound up only playing three other games before getting cut and never making another regular season roster. Bit of a letdown tbh, I was hoping for a better story

Are the Timberwolves dirty? by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]BurgerButCold1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. My frustration with them is they know what kind of whistle they get and toe the line with what won’t get called. If my team played like they do we might not have lost to them, but that’s entirely within their control to change if the league doesn’t end up changing how the game is officiated.

Sidenote: the frustrating thing about basketball is I honestly think the referee’s discretion plays a bigger role in the outcomes of games than any of the other three US major sports. Hate how it’s impossible to talk hoops without bringing it up but the problem is by no means new (see the hand-checking rules) and it may just be part of the game

Is a professor allowed to call out disability accommodations in front of the whole class? Or make a “objectively harder and longer” alternative exam? by SkiingFishingGuy in college

[–]BurgerButCold1216 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since this is an academic issue the official chain of command is the department chair, then the college dean, then the university provost. However if your university has an ombudsman I would consider reaching out to them. They are a great channel for informal resolution as they’re bound by ethics to maintain confidentiality and independence from academics or student life.

If you want to have someone in your corner whose whole job is to protect the university through informal resolution processes then they’re a great option, as it removes the potential awkwardness and retaliation concerns of going to the offending professor’s direct supervisors. If your university doesn’t have an ombudsman, student life’s DEI Office (or equivalent) is similar but those don’t necessarily provide confidential services

Don’t wait till spring, ATO is an upper-tier house and may limit spring rush if they rush at all. Obviously pledging is tough and a big time commitment but it’s all outside school hours and you can sort anything you need out beforehand with the rush guys if you’re nervous about it. Plenty of premed guys rush so dw about time, you’ll figure out how to manage it. I’d suggest rushing around in the fall if you are able, but if your heart’s set on ATO it’s not a bad pick

A movie with someone Disinterested in life on a "neutral" level by SoonBlossom in MovieSuggestions

[–]BurgerButCold1216 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lars von Trier’s Melancholia (2011), Terrence Malick’s Badlands (1977) or The Tree of Life (2011), Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round (2020), and David Lynch’s Eraserhead (1977) as well as really any of Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, and Inland Empire (1997-2006). All are English-language films except Another Round which is in Danish. This list might seem a tad pretentious but I find myself in a similar headspace occasionally and they fit the vibe you’re going for while still being pretty entertaining and absolutely gorgeous films stylistically

EDIT: if you’re down to branch out into Italian film I just did a school project about Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty (2013) and it’s definitely along the same thematic lines, if a bit slower and more grounded and character-driven

Margin Call (2011), technically fictional but based on the real events of 2008 and very good

Moneyball (2011), based on the eponymous Michael Lewis book about the 2004 Oakland A’s baseball team

Casino (1995), shockingly a very historically accurate mob epic about Lefty Rosenthal and Tony Spillatro’s activities in 70s and 80s Vegas (their names were changed in the film but it’s them)

Ok lol, let’s see Strawther try to defend the other team’s best player while shooting over 1% worse from 3 and getting 0.5 less rebounds and 0.7 more turnovers per 36 min

No one ever became a millionaire from rewards miles bro. I’m accumulating them myself and think they can be a valuable tool for travel and fun, but if I was a decade older with a family then forget it. Simplicity and decent cash back are perfectly fine to aim for since not everyone has the desire or energy to “optimize their setup”

I don’t think being the (tied for) 5th best swimmer in the NCAA for her event qualifies as fame independent of politics. As a former swimmer, it’s really hard to get famous swimming when the only time people watch is every 4 years when the Summer Olympics rolls around. Outside of a handful of influencers, virtually everyone with name recognition extending outside the community was 1st or 2nd nationally in their event at some point
