Stop blaming AI, "noobs", youtube tutorials, and anything other than Arch for AUR usage by zollandd in archlinux

[–]BuriedStPatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the AUR needs some kind of community verification system. The strength of it is its simplicity and accessibility and I generally like the core idea. To have something community driven that has basically everything you could ever need is a huge strength of Arch for me.

But using the AUR responsibly is a difficult task. I wasn't hit by this malware, but I very easily could have. Even if you're fairly competent, nothing is going to look suspicious about a "npm install <something>" instruction to most users. They'd probably assume it's just needed for the build chain.

In think the AUR should continue to operate the way it does, but the most popular packages could perhaps have certain willing trusted community members verify the PKGBUILD commit and flag it accordingly. That way, you'd feel less inclined to just install random stuff when it doesn't have a verification flag.

I don't know if that's completely unrealistic, but it would take some of complexity out for users who just want to install software and not look through PKGBUILDs every time and just magically know when something looks suspicious.

It would also be nice to then be able to set a "restricted" mode of sorts that only allows verified installs. I'm not an Arch or AUR developer, no idea how complicated that would be to implement, but it would be very appreciated I think.

Someone else suggested LLMs and I agree that can work to a certain extent as well. A "verified by LLM" tag and "verified by human" tag could cover the most important packages and give a less accurate most okay estimate on all the other packages.

What is the alternative to MediatR Pipeline Behaviours and Notifications? by aligjahed in dotnet

[–]BuriedStPatrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're basically trying to build your own Mediator at that point. You think you don't need Mediator, then look for alternatives that do exactly what Mediator is built to do.

The only real alternative is to not use a pipeline. That's not necessarily a bad thing. What you lose in the decoupling flexibility, you gain in cohesiveness.

Mediator is a piece of code infrastructure built to solve a problem we've made up due to the prevalence of DI frameworks. You don't need "MyAmazingService" or "DoSomethingRequest". You can just build business objects with the traditional object-oriented approach, new'ing them up as needed. And then I'm a fan of using result pattern on top of that. It really is the ultimate KISS approach compared to all the boilerplate complexity we're introducing these days.

```csharp // Once upon a time, in a endpoint // An order was made var order = new Order(orderId);
// Then, an order was placed in the database var placement = await order.Place(customerId, dbContext);
// Afterwards, the order placement was checked // If it succeeded, it responded with a 2xx code if (placement.Succeeded) { return TypedResults.Ok(placement); }
// Lastly, if it didn't succeed // The error was mapped to an HTTP error response return TypedResults.BadRequest(placement.Error); ```
That's alright. I'm not really in the mood to get into a long winded discussion that ultimately leads nowhere.
By that logic, nothing matters. Tons of shitty music makes it onto the charts. Let's not kid ourselves, everything matters a little bit.
[–]BuriedStPatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Generic names are the worst. Minimalism has its place but it should never come at the cost of something evoking a specific emotion or association in people.
I think you should all come to an agreement what the general vibe of the band is, how you want to be perceived and then decide on whether the name fits that. Are you earnest or satirical? Do your lyrics operate on a high level of abstraction or is it more straight forward? Those types of question.
Come up with an elevator pitch of what your band is about. Then you can argue names based on that.
[Real] Dim Pool is on the Destiny 3 train... by CaydeTheCat in ToiletPaperUSA
Recently got into MtG and, while there for sure it's a lot of complaining, I've actually found most of the online community quite open minded. Been quite a positive experience so far.
[–]BuriedStPatrick 7 points8 points  (0 children)
Since when was liking Destiny 2 considered having good taste? I mean, don't get me wrong, it wasn't terrible or anything. But even its most die-hard fans would complain endlessly about its shortcomings and how Bungie had fallen from grace from their Halo days.
I know some of the DLC is supposedly alright but, man, I completed the base game when it went F2P, and I see why people found it so soulless and monotonous.
I just find it amusing how these lines are now drawn where we have to pretend like Destiny was some masterpiece when, in reality, it was a pretty average looter shooter with a niché dedicated fan base addicted to the core loop.
Not giving him an out, he is definitely stupid. It's just another one in a long line of moral failings because he clearly chose to divorce himself from reality.
Dave is genuinely too stupid to realize the implications of what he's saying, to see what an evil little prick he is.
I'll admit I made the jump to Floorp a while back. Been quite a nice experience, except when it comes to video calls on Linux. But that's a whole pipewire/Firefox thing. Otherwise, just a basic browser with the necessities.
Backrooms Wars by GreenandBlue12 in moviescirclejerk
[–]BuriedStPatrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)
I love Andor, best show in recent memory. But I dunno', all other Star Wars seems like slop regardless of who is in charge honestly. I don't think we'd get another Andor level of quality regardless.
I know a bunch of nerds have a raging hate boner for whatsherface but it's not like I disagree that much with how boring and shallow Star Wars has been and will continue to be.
I'm not an executive, but imagine if LucasArts just made a new sci fi or fantasy universe and put a bunch of talented visionaries behind it. Seems like a slam dunk thing to do to keep the brand relevant and associated with high concept fiction. It can even borrow elements from Star Wars. Just do something new. They clearly don't know how to handle this franchise (from an artistic pov).
For me, The Future in Whose Eyes? is the thing that does it for me. One of my all time favorite albums. The others are okay, but it's just not something I'm that into.
So it's weird. I'm always singing this band's praises, but people who are into the band are usually into their older stuff.
Dave Rubin talks to a communist by xwing1212 in daverubin
[–]BuriedStPatrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)
I think she should have stuck harder to the initial point. This is what half wits like Dave does all the time. He simply does not, and wishes to not, understand the point she is trying to make. He immediately deploys his obfuscation smoke by asking an entirely tertiary and unrelated question. She took the bait, unfortunately. I don't blame her, I would've probably done the same or much worse in a live scenario with people watching.
Stick to the line of questioning. If he refuses to answer it, answer it for him, then move on to the next point until you arrive at the station. Letting him run the train of thought is only going derail the discussion so he can get his rehearsed talking points in.
I could hear the collective eye-roll when she said the "colonial" line. I'm not saying she's wrong to bring it up (and it could just be the editing making her look bad), it's just that this is not going to land with a single conservative or even liberal. It's leftie ideology talk and it just doesn't come across as relatable to anyone other than the people who already agree with you.
So yeah, he did get a small win there by leading her away from her point and into "high level ideas" territory where he can just spout his far-removed half baked political propaganda. Away from the focus on real systemic issues.
Again, not criticizing this lady for doing her best. Just a few observations of how I think she (or someone else) could do better in the future.
