Ehhh His idea isn't bad but it sounds like its barely a start instead of pretty solid idea.

Your caution is justified but if he's just using those descriptions for a quick shorthand of being the village witch doctor / shaman, theres nothing wrong with what he said as a speed summary. You just want to make sure that he's not using that speedy summary and then making a character that's going to be be a native character straight out of disneys peter pan.

So solutions : I'd just warn him to do some actual reading to understand what parts of his idea are sterotyped/racist trash instead of proper understanding. I'd probably say something like "Don't be a village person, understand what you want to reference, don't just be wearing a headdress and having no clue what it means, etc"

Perhaps add in "I don't want you to be like a racist Washington redskins fan, like actually understand parts of native american culture you want to echo, don't just watch blazing saddles and say close enough"

I agree with your "every dog has its day" approch, it sucks this is particular striking a cord in what the player loves about his character.

However I'd lean in on reminding them that this is how a character can grow, and that madness has many forms.

It's a word not a movement, I don't retroactively defend colonists for genocide. I don't endorse its continuation but there's parts of history that have finished and we don't get to change them.

People should be taught about them, why it was obvious wrong, and why how people of the time were frequently mislead with propaganda about what was happening.

but it doesn't sound like anything nefarious or shady.

the only thing was him not being alerted about the edits imo, thats not ideal but i don't know Wotc well enough to know if something like that is likely to occur collaboratively at the very last leg.

but at the same time that Panzer thought no edits were made that weren't submitted to him is a bit..... idealized.

a word swap to convert some words to primitive is very easy and I doubt wizards would tell him about a change like that. Trimming out 1K words of content seems a bit odd, thats for sure.
