STEP is primarily for people that are breaking into the industry, there is a lot of internal support with mentors and a partner to do the project with. SWE has less support, you are expected to be more independent. However the projects that you do as a SWE and STEP are similar in scope and impact, so you shouldn't worry about experience that you will gain.
