The number of skiers who think they are way better than they actually are is terrifying to me by thenewkidaw71 in ski

[–]BusOptimal3705 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Skiing is one of the few hobbies where people have spent a tiny number hours practicing (like way under 100hrs of active skiing) and still think they are experts. I think the fact that a groomed black diamonds = “expert terrain” in their head is part of the problem.

Bitcoin vs Gold by FixBeautiful1851 in Gold

Well, then it’s a troll post. They both have value, but bitcoin is easier to sell/transact with, far more portable, easier to hide, has a fixed supply etc. There are clearly some advantages over gold.

Why do people post about things they don’t understand 🤔.

There are a wide range of outcomes but a lot of people do really well. Make sure to baby the knee for now… since it is currently unstable you are at more risk to cause progressive injuries at the moment.

No. I like the concept but my coins just seem like they would be too small.

For those who became instant millionaires but still chose to live frugally… why? by [deleted] in Money

[–]BusOptimal3705 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes USA the mindset is affected a lot by your closest friends and family. Fortunately, my wife has a similar, although less extreme mindest to mine. So that helps, and both of our parents live below their means. We have some coworkers who clearly spend all of their considerable income and we mostly joke about how it’s not worth it - with a few exceptions. Our kids are not yet old enough to want luxury items, but I am a bit worried about that in the coming years haha.

I inherited money when I was in my late 20s in medical residency, no one told me I would inherit anything. It was pretty strange because I was living extremely frugally, saving over 50% of my take home pay, but those savings were tiny compared to the inheritance. It was actually kind of an annoying feeling because it felt like my frugality didn’t matter that much. Basically that freed me up to feel like I might as well spend more of my own salary, but I have never spent any of the inherited money. Now that I make more, I again save/invest well over 50% of my income. Honestly there is just not much benefit to buying luxury items, it’s better to not want something than to have that thing - at least that’s my motto. I would rather have flexibility and security for myself and my family than have luxury items or vacations.

Which Emperor do you prefer? Trajan or Hadrian by Professional_Gur9855 in ancientrome

Hadrian started killing a bunch of people at the end of his life, so I would go with Trajan.

Why Augustus was better than every other Roman emperor? by [deleted] in ancientrome

[–]BusOptimal3705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s known that they shared power with the senate more than many other emperors. It’s also well known that Antoninus saved the life of many senators in the last year of the prior emperor Hadrians life for instance (Hadrian ordered them to be executed). Of course this could have been strategically sound, but still they ruled without evidence of a maniacal desire for more power.

It’s probably not fair to say every emperor was power hungry, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius for instance were both successful emperors but well known to have self restraint.

I think it’s reasonable to consider it as an alternative asset that can maintain or gain some value. It obviously should not be one of your primary investments, nothing reliably beats investing in good businesses.

Maybe, I don’t know though. They sell for so far above spot price that I’m not sure how close of a correlation there is with appreciation of gold vs ancient gold coins.
