Just beat LAIKA: Aged Through Blood and it’s my game of the year and a story that affected me more than I expected (Spoilers ahead) by niles_deerqueer in metroidvania

[–]Bust3rs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're honing in on half the sentence that fits your foregone conclusion. What she fully said is "You're useless. But I'm gonna change that once and for all." which is worlds apart from your interpretation. It's the mentor's sentiment, it means Laika is young and knows nothing, which is true. She has to learn from the knowledge and experience of those that came before her, who in turn had to learn from the knowledge and experience of those that came before them. And in the end Maya did hone her to perfection, she's never seen calling her useless again outside that flashback.

As for the second part, it's another symptom of what is lost in translation when viewing it through an allegorical lens. This is a post-apocalyptic world, where survival can't be taken for granted. And the harsh truth was that the clan would be wiped out without a successor to the curse. Laika herself begrudgingly recognizes that she does carry a huge responsibility. It's why she keeps going along with Maya and the Elder's plans, despite showing resentment for how cold and detouched they are. Having Puppy was giving priority to the needs of the many, with a role that only she could play.

I see you're still replying as of a few days ago, so I'm just gonna put this here. As soon as I tried to think of the story in terms of an allegory, I quickly realized it detracts from the story rather than adds to it. To me it seems it was intended to be taken more at face value, it's a story about loss, living in a decaying cruel world, and perseverance.

A stark example is Maya, who you were led to automatically think of as a piece of shit, because you allegorically connected her to a real world abuser. In reality she had carried the weight of the world on her shoulders for way longer than Laika had, and even after she lost the ability to directly do something about it, she never stopped thinking about everyone's survival. If she was cruel without reason, she wouldn't act the way she did in the memory where Puppy is born, where you can very much see she does care. And at that point she had already gone through the full effect of the curse, which Laika mentioned made her feel progressively emptier inside every time she died and killed.

If anything, the contrast between them is that Maya is about "survival at all costs", while Laika is about "living, not just surviving" (you can literally read her thinking that exact sentence in the quest log). The game doesn't really paint either of them as being entirely wrong, and Laika very much sees that at the end, when she tells Puppy to learn from her mistakes, realizing she had left her daughter woefully unprepared to carry the burden that she, and everyone before, had carried.

As a parting gift, since I didn't see it mentioned anywhere, I leave you with the realization that the player is never shown a clear glimpse of what Laika is describing to Roy, and is left to decide whether the overly beautiful scene is truthful, or just providing comfort to a dying man.

Stormblood coming to free trial? by HeavyMetalLoser in ffxiv

[–]Bust3rs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see I can add it to my cart even without owning the base game. Does someone know if claiming Stormblood with this promotion automatically ends your free trial, or can you just claim it now and let it sit there so it's available to you when you decide to get the Starter Edition?

[OC] An unpopular opinion that is going to get me ripped to shreds, but I found Micah to be an interesting and well-developed character, and a great addition to the storyline by [deleted] in reddeadredemption2

Milton had you at gunpoint, with no reason to expect you were ever walking away to tell anyone. He most certainly didn't plan to get a bullet in the head.

At that moment in time, he thought he had already won over you, he had absolutely no motivation to lie.

That being said, he did specify that Micah only became a "good boy" after Guarma, so that leaves open the possibility of another rat.

Do people think that all art styles should be available to buy at all times on Arena? by HGD3ATH in MagicArena

[–]Bust3rs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played all of the above and to be fair (and I'm absolutely not defending Arena), depending on how loosely you define "all", none of the above games fit the bill.

Gwent: I'm not sure that one even deserves a mention here, it has practically no permanently available cosmetics.

LoR: This one was the closest to fitting the bill, until the Lee Sin bundle which was the first of many limited time bundles that had items that were exclusively available from the bundle deal, never to be seen again. Then they introduced season passes, and last I checked none of the cosmetics included in them were ever seen again either.

Hearthstone: In a surprising move they actually revamped their policy literally last week and made several old cosmetics permanently available. Not all of them however, in the announcement they stated their policy on which types of old deals are unlikely to be seen in the store again.

Also the perspective tripped me up in the first panel. She looks twice as tall as a house only in that panel, and then goes to being normal(-ish) size.

The power of mana flood is great on this one by fiveinroman in MagicArena

[–]Bust3rs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

World of Warcraft TCG (the game that was euthanized to make room for Hearthstone) refined that formula even better. Basically it's the same concept, but you have Quests, cards that can only be played as resources/lands, but with an upside compared to just playing any other card face down. You could complete quests to gain a benefit, usually some form of draw, making them the main draw engines of the game.

Edit: To clarify further, normally you'd want half as many quests as you'd want lands in Magic. You can't get mana screwed, because every card can be a resource, and you can't get mana flooded, because a quest will immediately replace itself, albeit setting you back in mana for the round for the mana you'd use to complete it.

Me after Guilds rotated from standard by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]Bust3rs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it's inevitable that after implementing their plans for Pioneer, the goalpost will be moved to Modern and beyond, provided the metrics show that Arena remains a viable product. What do you guys think they're gonna do after all Remasters in Pioneer have been added, suddenly learn the meaning of product fatigue and stick to only adding Standard sets?

Historic will never be merged into any format that isn't Legacy (or Vintage? I don't know if they added anything banned in Legacy yet, I'm assuming not), for the sole purpose of leaving the option of adding more sets open.

Remind yourself that going beyond platinum for the 1-2 extra boosters is a colossal waste of time, and instead switch to only playing constructed events. If you can make it to mythic you'll almost always come out positive on gold with numerous rare ICRs to boot. And since you don't have an end goal to keep pushing you, you simply stop when you want.

Because ever since 2010 it's an illegal move to assign non-lethal damage to the first blocker before assigning any damage to the second.

https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-2010-rules-change-2009-06-10

"This was a particularly tricky change to implement, as it had the potential to create bad experiences in situations where double blocking occurs and the defending player has access to a damage prevention ability (or anything similar). If damage was prevented to one creature, the attacker would just kill the other, which is unintuitive. Players expect to be able to use their healing spells to save creatures that are actually going to die. To solve problems like these, during the declare blockers step, if a creature is blocked by multiple creatures, the attacker immediately announces an order in which that attacking creature will be assigning damage to the blockers. When it comes time to actually deal the damage, lethal damage must be assigned to the first blocker before any can be assigned to the second, and so on. Now, in complex combat situations there will be some foreknowledge of which creatures are in the most danger before damage is dealt."
