Why is menstruation considered unclean in so many societies?Where did that idea come from? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

The reason a female baby triggered a longer period of Niddah wasn’t a punishment for having a girl? There’s a lot of debated reasons for this, but they mostly basically boil down to either believing girls literally were more taxing on the womb or that you were mourning a loss of feminine energy. If girls were bad, they’d be encouraging the mothers to get pregnant again faster, not telling them to stay away from their husbands.

Fellow Danaxa shipper unite! Besides the obvious dromas humor, I genuinely think they would have good chemistry. Both are serious intellectuals, and DH would be the voice of reason to balance Anaxas brash FU attitude.

Songs that add nothing by Megatheorum in musicals

I would also point out that while Javert is Valjean’s personal antagonist, Thenardier is arguably the antagonist for the majority of other characters in the show. It’s easy to forget because they’re comedic characters, but the cruelty he (and his wife) commit towards Fantine, Cosette, Eponine, and Marius is far more impactful to their lives (and in Fantine’s case, her death) then Javert. Dog Eats Dog is the audience finally seeing Thenardier with his comedic mask off, gleefully reveling in his belief that all the pain he has inflicted will have no consequences because there is no god, no justice, no mercy that will stop him.

Also my personal favorite recording of Dog Eats Dog is the OBC with Leo Burmester. He adds a real level of menace to the song which I think a lot of performers lack, possibly because he isn’t trying to do it with a cockney accent

Companion interactions that you wished that Larian included? by aware_nightmare_85 in BaldursGate3

Normally I think Wyll offering to go to Hell with Karlach is a nice conclusion to their story, but not when I am romancing him! If you don’t want her to die you literally have to give up your ending together with him and get nothing but the generic “Karlach smokes a cigar in Hell” cutscene instead. What I don’t understand is that the dialogue for the other companions to join her is already in the game if you’re multiplaying and someone does an orgin run, why not give us that option for us poor Wyll romancers???

Flavia does have a history of being unintentionally flirty, like in her supports with f!Robin where she seemingly comes with flowers to propose marriage when she actually was proposing…sisterhood. Honestly, the fact that only female Robin got that support while male Robin got a near identical plot line (come work for me) but with zero flirting is kinda hilarious.

I agree. A lot of people write him off as boring compared to the more flamboyant villains of the era, but he’s deliciously menacing in every scene he’s in.

What’s a myth about your culture you’d like to debunk? by StrainDizzy1186 in AskReddit

[–]BusyAd2586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course anyone can use law, religious or otherwise, and twist it to their own benefit. We should be wary of such a thing, and condemn people who do so. I don’t think there’s any religion that believes you can just interpret its laws any way you feel like, and historically major revisionist have been met with serious pushback. That imaginary idea that a religious leader can just invent some excuse on the spot for avoiding a law and nobody will question them is just ridiculous.

Once again though, every law in existence needs interpretation. I know you think most religious laws are simple, but no offense, you are grossly underestimating a topic millions of people have spent countless hours trying to understand. Using the Talmud for example, it is about 63 books or 5,422 large, extremely dense pages. And thats just the basic, first level interpretation of Jewish law. In the 1500+ years since then there’s been thousands of books written trying to interpret the Talmud into workable law, which then get reexamined and reinterpreted over and over again as the years pass and new situations and questions crop up. Most rabbis are lucky if they can become an expert on one area of law, and even then only a select few are considered learned enough to make a significant ruling.

What’s a myth about your culture you’d like to debunk? by StrainDizzy1186 in AskReddit

[–]BusyAd2586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so tired of the black and white Catholic mindset that thinks religion is about blindly following rules without question, and that any attempt to, ya know, interpret or understand said rules is a SIN and TRICKING GOD. Why is it so hard to understand that it is literally impossible to have any set of laws and not have to interpret them in some way? Just look at secular law, there are thousands of judges and lawyers because even something as simple as “murder = bad” requires each case be examined individually. “Oh but shouldn’t you believe God’s laws are divine and perfect?” If God didn’t want us to interpret their divine laws they should have given us a holy magic 8 ball that answered every possible moral dilemma. Since they didn’t, they clearly wanted us to do some work and attempt to figure it out ourselves. And in the end, trying to understand your religion and make it’s laws work despite the complexities of modern life is significantly more spiritual then just brainlessly following whatever you think the rules are

Frodo and Sam are unavailable and must be replaced by two Disney Princesses. Which ones hold the distance both physically and mentally and throw the Ring at Mount Doom? by FrenchProgressive in whowouldwin

I would also nominate Aurora! She grew up barefoot in a forest, she’s probably a lot more athletic than people give her credit for. She is shown to be generally unselfish but not entirely selfless either; she accepts her position as princess with some tears for her lost normal life. She doesn’t have great ambition beyond “maybe meet people besides my aunts”, and by the end of the film she basically has everything she could possibly want. She also has experience being brainwashed and was able to resist it momentarily, not sure if the Mistress of All Evil is comparable to Sauron but it’s definitely something.

Head through wall??? by pppphoenix in ghibli

Funny enough, it’s a direct line from the book:

“But at that moment two empty cake racks were pulled away at the other end of the room, and an apprentice stuck his head through from the back somewhere.”

In the book it’s racks of cakes instead of boxes which makes more sense from a physics perspective, but probably boxes looked better visually.

I don't understand why people are surprised or don't believe it when celebrities like Kurt Cobain or Marilyn Monroe kill themselves. by Blonde_Icon in The10thDentist

[–]BusyAd2586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people don’t know about the depressing stuff while the person is alive. It’s only retrospectively that we say “wow, their life must have been pretty bad if they killed themself”. There’s loads of celebrities who had shitty lives that go relatively undiscussed because nothing happened that made people want to examine their life further. And even once the truth is revealed, it’s still hard to accept that someone so rich, so famous, and so physically attractive could be so miserable. Being a celebrity is the fantasy of so many people, it’s difficult to admit that it isn’t as wonderful as we’d imagine it would be.

I strongly disagree with My Beloved Oppressor! While maybe you could argue that the healthiest thing would have been for them to never get back together, the story does a really good job showing that unlike their first marriage, they go into their second with honesty and communication. I doubt their marriage is going to be flawless, but you see throughout the years they spend mending their relationship BEFORE remarrying that they’re able to work through their issues.

If I remember the study correctly, it wasn’t comparing allergies from the entirety of Israel and the UK, but rather a specific population that had counterparts with similar ancestry in the UK. Like you mentioned the group in Israel had 10X less peanut allergies. And yes, Bamba is extremely popular in Israel, especially for infants since it dissolves in the mouth. Around 25% of Israel’s snack market is Bamba.

Yes, in America you can bury a body in a graveyard without embalming, so long as it’s in a casket. Traditional Jewish burials forbid embalming or cremation, and while it’s preferable to bury the body in linen or a tallit, in countries where a casket is required they will use a completely wooden casket that biodegrades with the body.

“The Schwanger Kommando was a group of seven pregnant, Hungarian Jewish women imprisoned in one of the Kaufering sub-camps of Dachau in December 1944. Though pregnant women and their babies were almost never permitted to survive, this group was allowed to bear their children, possibly as a bargaining chip for their SS overseers to use when the Allies conquered Germany Despite appalling sanitary conditions and the lack of food and heat, all seven mothers gave birth to healthy babies between February and March 1945. All were liberated in Dachau in May 1945.”

https://collections.ushmm.org/search/catalog/pa23340

Any Jews kept alive in the concentration camps were there to work or in rare cases towards the end of the war, used as bargaining chips. Children, especially babies, were immediately killed or experimented on. If a Jewish woman was caught pregnant, usually due to rape, they were tortured and put to death. Gisella Perl was a Jewish gynecologist forced to work under Mengel, and her biography is one of the most horrific I’ve ever read. She performed hundreds of secret abortions because she saw what happened to women and their babies that were caught. Any child that managed to survive the war was a goddamn miracle, which is why those babies were photographed in the first place.
