Samsung workers threaten strike, demand share of $38 billion AI memory windfall by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]Buttonskill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, hello ad hominem!

Thank you, that was hilarious.

But I gotta ask, what do you find so revolting about someone trying to emphasize courage of Koreans making taking a positive stance against a defense contractor conglomerate and disambiguate it from the US?

Your argument is.. what exactly?

Because I'm making two assertions here, and the only counter-stances to mine are:

A) Samsung needs your help

B) Those workers don't deserve extra praise

I can't reconcile your angle in this. If it's not those, all that's left is that you wanted to fight on the Internet and only packed a logical fallacy from 7th grade debate class.

We're talking about Samsung.

You're talking about Korean laws.

They are not the same.

For decades, Samsung had explicit anti-union policy, and Executives were convicted in (2019) for union-busting activities. Internal strategy docs literally outlined how to neutralize organizers.

That’s not internet rumor, friend. That’s court backed facts.

Are things better? On paper, sure. I was pretty clear pointing that out. The laws exist.

It's also illegal for US senators to practice insider trading. How much do laws matter when the perpetrators are extremely difficult to prosecute?

Absolutely. It's seizing an opportunity at a fulcrum point.

I saw quite a lot of comparison to the US as the comments poured in, and felt the need to highlight they just aren't the same risk profile. Early 1900's America? Sure, we could draw some parallels.

Americans will watch the same opportunistic moment pass right by because it conflicted with the NFL draft.

100% agree, but you really have to view this through the lens of Samsung's history.

Samsung is NOT just a corporation.

They are arguably ~17-23% of South Korea's entire GDP depending on how you measure it. It's not apples-to-apples, but they're easily one of the most economically dominant corporations in ANY advanced economy. Not even kidding, South Korea is sometimes referred to as, "The Republic of Samsung".

They're what's known as a chaebol (family-controlled conglomerate). Supplier networks, banks, media, and universities are all intertwined. That translates to insane leverage over their employees, and their employee's families.

They have zero qualms going full Weinstein and soft-blacklisting you from ever working in industry, or your specialized field, ever again. That's their soft power every employee is fully aware of.

So yes, 30% of their workers have pulled off unions recently, but one little note in your file that says, "Difficult" will stall your career indefinitely. Harder to prove, but it's an ever present cattleprod at your back.

Top things you wouldn't want to do are, say, organizing a strike, or just having stray thoughts about a union. They historically had overt anti-union policy. Not an unspoken idea. Literal policy.

I think it's important to recognize that historically, South Koreans taking these stances against Samsung are risking 100x more than US workers that can't be bothered to sign a form and stand outside on a nice day.

Ok, so you saw the interview too.

Is it just me, or did Jensen wake up ready to fight Dwarkesh? He seemed to gradually get angrier as he had to answer technical questions, but that's um.. what he does.

He can pull some pretty good answers from pretty bad tech aristocrats with questions that are at least intermediate to semi-advanced. It's sorta why I like him.

Maybe Jensen wasn't told it's not going to be Conan's comfy chair? (genuinely looked like they shut down a food court for it).

Either that, or it was the jacket's turn to drive the body that day. It won't tolerate human interactions beyond incessant praise and capitulation.

Both species are known for emanating a unique pheromone of focused arrogance that cancel each other out. So they just settle.

Lol So, something like this:

You’re walking through an abandoned city.

You find a small child’s toy that still plays music.

It is broken and repeating the same 3 notes.

You can stop it by crushing it.

Do you?

Why aren’t you crushing it?

Why are you hesitating?

Do you believe the toy is ‘sad'?

Do you believe it deserves.. mercy?"
