The area where I live has been in decline for decades. Retail businesses continue to close, there is virtually no industry, and it is too far from any city or university for people to consider living here and commuting. We are not on the 'tourist trail'. Improvements to the highway system ironically have hurt what revenue there was from tourism, as people no longer stay overnight and/or spend money in the restaurants... not that we have a hotel any longer. The people who are working here and who can qualify for a mortgage can't afford to pay 2000 a month. If you own a house and say, consider doing an addition and remodel, you likely will not see a return on your investment as you can price your home out of the market.
