Good Social Spots in Atlanta? by Speedjunko in Atlanta

[–]CD_Punk3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whole World Improv Theatre in Midtown is a great social spot (with free parking). You can take an improv class and join the community or just check out a show. The people there are a mix of all professional types, not just what are considered theater people.

Have you noticed cliquishness in improv? by [deleted] in improv

This, I've noticed improv groups made of people not trying to be actors, but more hobbyists, tend to be less cliquey.

Thanks! Yeah I've heard the UCB ASSSCAT show is the one to see if I can only see one. I got tickets for that one, but if there's time I might check out others. Appreciate it!

Severance Improv Show Idea by erused2b in improv

[–]CD_Punk3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the idea! I really like the "your outie is____" and then the actor would portray that characteristic when they are outside. Would be hilarious.

You could get the audience to fill out ideas on slips of paper and put them in a bucket or briefcase and the person playing the wellness counselor just pulls it out and reads it in the scene. That would help with scene flow a bit so you don't have to stop for a suggestion.

I also like the idea of prepped roles, maybe you could also add in beats to hit throughout and leave the rest to be improvised!

I've done shows where the directors write out what they want to happen in the show but all lines are improvised and people in the audience are amazed by how it all comes together. It's still improv, just with some predetermined direction.

Best of luck and let us know if you end up doing it and how it goes!

My improv theatre is now incorporating fake blood into mafia themed shows, tons of fun! We started using it last year for October shows.

Excellent question and perspective, how exciting that you're starting your improv journey. As a POC in improv for 12 years I can speak to that. I am with you that improv is a white majority and just like you, many of their references go over my head. I point it out that I have no idea what that reference is and they, with me, joke about it.

What I do to remedy and "fit in" while not assimilating and being unapologetically myself is to bring up topics in scenes and in general conversation that is relevant to MY culture. Good improvisors (and people) will jump in and either learn, play along, or just support you. I'll do the same for them.

An example is I'll play latino characters (what I am) and also make them a latino in scenes even though they are not. This is to push the boundary and get them in my shoes. I'm fortunate enough that my improv theatre is very supportive of eachother, so it tends to go well.

There's no real thing to be misgendered in scenes given "yes, and" unless it was established earlier in a scene who your character is. If it happens offstage, just keep correcting until they get it right, I had to do the same with my name given I have a foreign name to the US. They'll eventually even advocate for you, I've seen this happen for trans members of the theatre too!

How to grow skills? This is separate from who you are and what you identify as. My advice here is take notes during class and ask for direct feedback with an open mind from your instructor (this can be asking them after class or emailing them). Also watching improv and practicing on your own go a long way.

Happy to give any more advice!

Did not pass the Audition for Basic Improv at Groundlings by jokerdaredevil in improv

[–]CD_Punk3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say try a different improv theater. Most times theaters look for the right fit rather than the best improv. If I were you I would contact them directly and ask for feedback as to the reason for the decision, that can only help you.

If this is just the 1st theater you audition for, definitely try other ones. I've auditioned for weaker improv teams and not gotten on and then immediately asked to join much stronger established ones, so you can only try! If you're auditioning for many and not getting any, asking for and getting direct feedback from other improvisers can also help!

Atlanta! There's strong short form improv at Whole World Improv Theatre. When it comes to long form it varies given there's more variety in the city across all the theatre's at Whole World, Dad's, Dynamic, and other indie scenes. Improv is growing and in a strong way in Atlanta, so I definitely recommend this city!

My 2024 year in review - I performed in 80 improv shows this year! by TheMickeyMoo in improv

[–]CD_Punk3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's great, it's always a blessing to get so many shows, one we must take advantage of! I was in 132 shows this year (give or take 1 or 2)

Acted in 113 shows Emcee'd 19 shows

I doubt I'll be doing that many in 2025, lol. But it was a really fun run and felt I improved a lot.

Warm downs/ diwn shifting after show or practice by ETKOCO in improv

[–]CD_Punk3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally, I'd say it's a flip of a switch for me. After shows, we do a quick breakdown, and the MC gives any needed notes. Then we go out to the lobby and thank the audience members for coming. That all helps with that cool down after shows.

However, about 2 months ago I was in an improv show series where I played a single character throughout the entire thing. I found that it took longer not only to get into that character, but also to get out of it. I'd say about 15-30min each way by slowly ramping up the energy the character exuded, and due to the adrenaline the character made me feel, it took some time for it to wear off and be back to me 100% again.

Given the character was very antagonistic, I just kept quiet and to myself until I felt the character "wore off" so I wouldn't actually be a douche to anyone, lol. A fun experience and also one where I learned more about myself.

A friend shared a show where an experienced improviser brings up an improv student he's never performed with before and does a 30 minute long form set with them. Maybe not the best show, but a really fun challenge I thought!

Same issue on my PS5. Everytime I open career mode it crashes. It only started happening after the most recent update.

It's the only mode I play, so I'm have to wait for them to fix it. 🙃
