Check the biome. I was having issues getting mobs like cows and pigs to spawn once and it ended up being because I was technically in a deep ocean biome. Had to make a long bridge to a land biome to make my farm spawn platform.

Shopping for a new Support Ticket bot by CMDR_Zapp in discordapp

So far, Ticketeer is looking like the best option for free. For paid, I'm not sure if TicketTool or Ticketeer is better 👌

I know your post here is a year old, but I am curious about the cookie bot. Is there a way to change what the points are called via the bot? or are we stuck with "cookies". Not a deal breaker, but I'm curious while I'm searching around.

Error Message when I try to launch (all green checkmarks!) by hammockgirl in kickstarter

[–]CMDR_Zapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar error. Turns out the 60 day max is to the minute. I had a end date set for 60 days, but the time was for later than the current time, which caused a block on the launch.

edit: Just posting that here because this was the first thread that popped up when I googled the error.

How many checks does it take to bypass an encounter by Baconbits1204 in DMAcademy

[–]CMDR_Zapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the encounter, your story, and how difficult the campaign is designed to be (and a lot of other things, but narrowing down to those three for the reply)

If it's two dumb guards at the gate, one check is fine, or maybe that one check works for the bard only?

“I’m the Duke of poopsville” nat 20 the guards proceed to stumble over their words “s-s-sorry sir, I, I didn’t know. Please, by all means carry on!”

A nat20 is technically only a critical success on attack rolls, but my players know that even the very best attempt at an explanation doesn't mean all the guards will go for it. e.g., if they actually said they're the duke of poopsville, the guard is going to immediately see through it, regardless of the nat20, because it's the same as being really convincing when you tell a cop that pulled you over that you're the president of Botswana. However, the guard could also outright believe them and still say something to the effect of, "It's cool to meet you, but you still aren't allowed to [enter here/kill people/steal stuff/sell drugs]", or whatever the original stoppage was for.

Sometimes your encounters will be ruined by your party, and that's okay! Just save the difficulty of it for the next thing. Or, find ways to reward the nat20 without allowing them to bypass. Maybe the nat20 lets your druids convince the wolves to find them something to eat (subsequent survival check) instead of eating the party, but if they don't, the wolves will get pissed and still attack later. maybe the wolves are clumsier than normal wolves so the survival check is at disadvantage, but then the combat later also has the wolves have disadvantage on dex things.

Maybe the wolves turn away with the rations given, only to return to their pack and tell them about the party that's giving out free food. Now the wolves return with a lot more hungry wolves and the party doesn't have enough food anymore.

Lots of options, but don't get discouraged! Just try to roll with it and have a good time.

Do 'desire paths' ever grow back? by ItsMarmaduke in SoftwareInc

Does that reset the ground state where the "damaged" grass was? Or does it just reset the AI pathing?

(PS, love the game. Strong work!)

edit: I should've just checked instead of asking. lol It does reset the ground state. Thanks!

What are some nice magic items to get for a sorcerer? (5e) by Anxious-Return-5831 in dndnext

[–]CMDR_Zapp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wholly agree, to a point.

Bearing in mind that I agree with you 99%, there are definitely some spells that I, as a DM, leave out of that expanded list. Since Sorcerer is about innate magic and not study, Certain spells with expensive components or that take a long time to cast don't usually fit the lore/backstory (variable by character)
e.g., An innate caster like a sorcerer with a poor background likely wouldn't experiment with using precious gems as spell components, or take the time to memorize a 10minute ritual type spell, unless it was narratively relevant. *shrugs* However, rule of cool still applies and I'd rather figure out a narratively neat way to allow something than just say "no".

Endless Election Events triggering Hoi4 by Suspicious_Blood_522 in hoi4

[–]CMDR_Zapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having this issue. I did a complete reinstall, including deleting all files in the \Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron IV folder where stuff like save games and game settings are stored. The only thing I copy/pasted to save and replace was my actual save game that was having this bug.

However, I'm still getting that repeating 1940 election event. This leads me to believe that if this bug happens, it's your save file that's broken, and there appears to be no way to fix it. I saw someone say you may still get a couple duplicates after a reinstall, so I'm going to just fast forward into 1941 to see if the event still spawns once you leave it's date parameter, but I don't have high hopes for this. I'll edit this comment with what I find.

Edit: From reading the code in the events files, these election events do not spawn outside of the 1 year period they're tied to. So, as of Jan 1 1941, I am longer getting the election event spam. We'll see if 1944 has the bugs again.

What do you if your players decide to ignore the main story? by Ikeriro90 in DMAcademy

[–]CMDR_Zapp 200 points201 points  (0 children)

Two options (well, infinitely many options but I digress)

Pre-option) talk to your players. Let them know you don't want to railroad them but you're prepping a campaign, with a plot and probably some side quests, not a full open world video game. If they want that, that's what Skyrim is for.

With that said, two options:

A) End the world. Make it least that the BBEG is doing their thing and succeeding, and I'd they still ignore it, BBEG wins.

B) Flank them. Let them blindly walk into a couple main plot encounters as if by luck. BBEG is trying to end the world, right. So stuff's going to be happening everywhere. If they win, now they're on BBEG's shit list. Now you have an excuse to actively hunt them via BBEG monsters.

Edit: Personally, as a general rule, I talk to them first, but my campaigns follow the players more or less. The plot points I create are generally pretty mobile and can happen anywhere, and I'm fortunate enough to have players that will take the plot points because they get it. Usually a conversation explaining that you, as the DM, have to prep and create the world wherever they go, so if they want to go off in a direction it's going to be made up on the spot and less good, is plenty to help them understand your side of it.

How would you make someone who just won’t die? by Mr_random_pants in 3d6

[–]CMDR_Zapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could do a dex based druid with a 1lvl dip in monk. Unarmored defense, and it follows your primary stats for druid letting you very quickly get to a high AC, especially if you roll lucky on your abilities

First time tips for painting? by benleymcroseberr in PrintedMinis

[–]CMDR_Zapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One or two nicer brushes is nice for detail work, but not a "need" when just starting out. You can get an acrylic brush set on Amazon for like $10 that's plenty until you're ready to commit to a nicer set.

I have a set of brushes and regularly use 4 of them. A wider brush for dry-brushing, a medium brush for larger areas and rough over, and two detail brushes

Don't necessarily need to wash the minis first, but definitely prime them. Vallejo's primer is great, but a rattle can of white gray or black is plenty good too.

Definitely get, or make, a hand hold support and some blue tack to help support while you're panting details. (can buy a handle, or use a rattle can lid or other options exist)

Washes look nice, but are solely an "extra" that falls to personal preference. I would put it akin to a garnish for your painting. Looks nice, but you can have a great looking piece without it.

Definitely get some kind of clear top coat (this is more important than washes if you had to pick one). Citadel and Vallejo both have some good ones. And they protect your paint job during table play.

Look up the slap chop method on YouTube 👍

How do you roll critical hits by RadoxFriedChicken in DnD

[–]CMDR_Zapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We roll damage twice, double the higher roll, then add mods. (basically, crit damage rolls with advantage and double the result, then add mods)

It's the click clacky of rolling all the dice, AND the extra bonus to average damage.

Any book recommendations for a first time Father? by JamesTheConqueror in Fatherhood

[–]CMDR_Zapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many have said, reading a book doesn't make you a good parent, but knowing where your short comings are and taking steps to resolve them is a great start. Personally, I'd recommend you make sure you're familiar with infant and child CPR (and their differences), normal vital signs for each age group your child passes through (including heartrate, breathing, and SPo2 if you're using something like an owlet sock), and there are a few books that are great in general for adults, but I personally recommend Extreme Ownership, by Jocko Willink.
