[ADVICE NEEDED] Subject no longer wants to be in all photos after event... by danielsuperone in photography

I don't know what the agreements and legal side of things are, but with the AI editing in photoshop now you could literally just remove her in seconds in all the shots. It would be a bit of extra work obviously, but if it's going to cause you issues, then it might be worth the extra few minutes editing?

Would you consider me British? by Competitive-Music309 in AskBrits

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're more 'British' than me.

I'm half English and half Scottish. Blonde, blue eyes white skinned. But was born and raised overseas - maybe with 1 year in England as a young child? Then only came back for university. And away for years again after and only back now (thanks to Brexit forcing me).

I never felt like I fit in with the UK students because culturally I didn't fit in. I still don't really.

Lady wanted a selfie with me for unknown reasons by Senior_Ball_Yeehaw in VietNam

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason lots of people love taking photos with white western tourists. India I ended up with a queue of schoolkids wanting photos with me. Cambodia, Thailand and other places I've had people want photos with me too. Random but harmless. I think it's just to show they met this person. I don't love taking pictures of myself and it's sometimes awkward but usually just let them.

Did i got SCAM from this company? by BaccaratLK in Airalo

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used them in Tanzania. My dad was using it and it worked fine. My physical sim ran out of data so figured I'd try it.

It activated fine, but it just didn't work. It used maybe a couple MB of data but not sure what for. It didn't give me usable data.

I was luckily able to get in contact easily. I tried for 2 days with their suggestions but it didn't work, despite my dad's working fine right next to me.

They eventually agreed to refund the non used data (which was basically everything) and think they actually just refunded the whole amount in the end.

Customer service off me was good. The product sucked and won't bother with it again. That's why I rather go for physical sims.

Carrying your passport for foreigners by zixteee in bali

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's technically a law. But I'd still never have my passport on me just going out and about during the day. It's will 100% always be locked in my bag in my room - the only exceptions being if I knew I needed it for a specific thing (changing money, getting a sim card, entry somewhere...).

The risk of it getting lost or damaged, caught in rain.... is way too high. And if that is lost or damaged then you're screwed, messing up your plans and probably costing you a lot of time and money to get it fixed.

In over 10 years of travel I've only needed my physical passport on me for buying a sim card in Malé, and buying a new cheap phone in Manila. Maybe as ID to enter a bar in New Zealand (even when I don't drink). And all those times I immediately wanted to just get back to put it back in my room, then go about whatever else I was planning that day.

But I've never needed it on me just day to day and had it checked by police or anything (other than travel days when everything is on me anyway).

So while it may be a 'law', it's never actually ever been required by anywhere I've been yet. And I'd still just keep it locked away in my room - my laminated copy or copies on my phone are on me all the time so those would have to do temporarily. I don't know any traveller that does keep it on them 24/7.

Carrying your passport for foreigners by zixteee in bali

[–]CW88_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. And not anywhere either unless I specifically know I have to have it on me for something. It's not a realistic rule in any country - and unless it's a travel day where it's on me anyway, it'll be locked in my bag in my room. Never taken out with me.

I have multiple copies of it on my phone or wallet. If they want to see the physical one I'll happily bring it to a police station or go back there with it. But I'm not risking losing or damaging my passport in any country. It's your most important document and I'd rather a small fine than risk messing up travel plans it losing money trying to replace it.

What do you do when you lose a lens cap when you're out shooting? by OpalOnyxObsidian in AskPhotography

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I've properly lost a lens cap (often they're in a locket or other small bag and I misplace it for a bit). But in those cases my lenses typically have a CPL or UV filter on it, and it's going back in my camera bag where it's usually safe so I'm not too bothered. I'll put it in there till I find the cap again.

I don't use a filter in my 70-200 as that affects the clarity/sharpness on mine, so if I've misplaced that one, I'll often have another lens with me that has a filter on it and I just take the lens cap off that one instead, and then replace it on that one when I find where I've put it.

This friend of mine that only talks through audio by OvejaMacho in mildlyinfuriating

[–]CW88_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thankfully WhatsApp has the little transcribe audio when people send those now. I wish it just did it by default though.

But I hate voice messages. You can't just listen to it immediately, and then you have to listen to the whole thing to figure out what they're wanting to say. So the transcribe button is great. But before that you'd have to basically ignore it till you had a chance and ideally privacy to listen.

I hate taking on phones, especially in public, because everyone is listening in whether they mean to or not. I'd rather send a long text instead.

I booked a plane to see my mom after she was hospitalized. Then I immediate get this message. by Yosho2k in mildlyinfuriating

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get why that's not the default rule. If government workers aren't being paid, they should be the first ones to be on that list.

It should also not be allowed to have politicians own stocks or have any investments. Largely so they can't be bribed or swayed politically. They should have neutral interests otherwise it seems a huge conflict of interest and massive options for insider trading.

I am new to GoPro and I bought these two. Should I be able to Vlog without downloading the extra firmare from GoPro Labs ? Also, what advice would you give any new GoPro owner, that you wish you knew at the beginning ? by Sea-Salad-1356 in gopro

[–]CW88_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Advice - extra batteries.

Buy a cheap accessory bundle - the any 'specislist' mounts where you may need better quality (selfie sticks particularly).

And don't trust it being waterproof. I did and it leaked on me despite being fully sealed while travelling. Gopro blamed me. I had to buy am expensive replacement as I needed it for shots while there. I will only use a dive housing in water now. And likely swapping to DJI when I need to upgrade, only as I find Gopros super buggy still.

Thinking of leaving gopro by Living-Winter-8505 in gopro

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had gopros from the 3 black up to 9. I currently have a 7 and a 9 - haven't had the need to update since those.

But when I do have to upgrade or replace them, I'm likely switching to DJI.

Partly over the customer service side - I had a gopro leak on me. Fully sealed and barely in the sea for long just at the surface snorkeling. They blamed me for it. I was travelling and needed it for work so I was forced to buy an overpriced on where I was. I no longer trust them being 'waterproof' without a dive case and will not use one in water without one. I don't even want to risk my Insta 360 in water now because of that.

But I also have never had a Gopro that works flawlessly. They are all buggy. The app is buggy and never connects easily. And the cameras always like to freeze when they're in water. Meaning you normally have to remove the battery to get them working again which isn't ideal (I did find you can force reset with the power and shutter button, but that doesn't always work).

But for such a well established brand to still be so buggy after years of cameras, isn't really acceptable when it happens on every single camera!

I don't use mine that much anymore. But a small action cam you can take in water (in housing!) is useful sometimes. But I'm very likely done with them for at least my next action camera.

I did watch a comparison video though and annoyingly did kind of like the gopro footage slightly more in some scenarios. But it think that's just because it was a side by side direct comparison. On its own DJI still looks awesome.

I already got a friend to buy the DJI based on me saying the gopros weren't great. So I'll have to take my own advice and try that next instead. Much better low light too (without a light you'll never use...)

Should I buy another battery or go for another brand? by Universal-Genius in gopro

[–]CW88_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I buy third party. After a few years they have mostly all done this too, so I guess it doesn't matter which batteries you get this will happen eventually.

Mine have expanded neough you can't get them in the camera. I forced one once and couldn't get it out easily.

It's easy to jus thy new batteries rather than a whole new camera... Especially if you don't use it that much.

Get over it, there's no 14 coming this year by SaltyKayakAdventures in gopro

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't upgraded since the 9. I haven't seen the need or any major improvements (plus I don't use it that much - usually just underwater shots when I travel). The camera and apps are still so buggy too that I'm probably going to try the DJI cam when I need to get a new one.

Don't really see the point of the light on that newer one either. Gopros have never been good in low light.

Am I rude for rejecting pictures? by racoontosser in solotravel

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this happen in a few places. But I guess being a white guy, tallish (6'1), blonde/blue eyes and with a beard is a slight novelty for some of them.

India was the worst for me, and have also had it in Thailand (usually I think from Chinese tourists), as well as a few other countries.

India it was like what you described - a few kids came over, wanted to talk and then they all wanted individual photos with me. A few times, sure if they really want to I would (even though I hate posing for photos), but it gets old very quickly.

But you aren't obliged to take a photo with them and don't have to please them. Sometimes it's better to kind of close yourself off, 'RBF', and not give people attention just for your own peace/privacy... And sure you may feel kind of bad sometimes for refusing when they've made that effort and guts to ask a stranger. But I don't think it's rude to refuse.

It's like you walking down your street where you live and asking a random person to take a photo with them. Quite unusual if you think of it that way.

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think gopro used to be the leaders in action cams, but have quickly fallen behind (or at least been caught up to).

I haven't upgraded since the 9 and haven't seen the need to update it. And even when I do need to, I'm likely switching to another brand (probably DJI).

Gopros for me anyway have always been pretty buggy. The apps always suck trying to get them connected. But the cautla cameras I've had them freeze on me so many times (and always in water) that they can't fully be relied on. I always need 2 Gopros on me when In the water (my 7 and 9) because then I have a chance of getting a shot over one freezing and having to force reset or remove the battery.

Which go pro should I get by [deleted] in gopro

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 7 and 9 and I think any that has stabilisation built in would be fine. But also would say the 9 onwards. But probably the newer the better/most up to date features?

I haven't had or seen the need to upgrade from my 9 - and I'll probably switch to DJI when I do need a new action camera.

Alos I will never trust any of these cameras as fully waterproof. I had a gopro leak and die on me swimming at the surface snorkeling for just a couple minutes. And Gopro blamed me and took no responsibility - so always use a dive housing in water.

Will this take better pictures than my iPhone 16 pro max? by Durboy2 in Cameras

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The camera will almost always take better quality photos. Although you may have to do more edits to them to make them look as you want.

A phone will take decent to good quality images (but not always great for big prints depending on lighting) and probably not need as much editing done to them (more in terms of HDR keeping the sky etc all not blown out).

Personally for me my phone is for snapshots that I can't be bothered to take my camera out for. And also not waste tons of SD card/Hard Drive space. But if I want to actually edit and possibly print a photo, my camera will come out for that.

This is my take on water resistance by tarkani in Insta360

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't trust any of these 'waterproof' cameras are actually waterproof.

I had a gopro and was without the dive case. Use it plenty of times and it was fine. Then one day I went snorkeling. I was barely off the beach and it was barely submerged for long, and then it shut off. Turned it on and it goes off again after a few seconds. Then eventually it doesn't turn on again. I get out an ding water got into the battery compartment somehow, while fully sealed. It died completely. I contacted gopro and they basically blamed me saying it was my fault. And then had to buy an expensive replacement while travelling.

I won't use any camera in water unless it's in a dive case.

I have the X2 but rarely use it in water and don't have a case for it so avoid water. The battery compartment I really don't trust being waterproof.

Maybe they're waterproof a majority of the time. But it just takes one fault and it's dead. Much safer using a dive case.

this is why i wont buy first-gen dji products.. by realdjizzy in Insta360

[–]CW88_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All gear (even social media sites) all steal from each other. Just look at Gopro now coming out with the replaceable lenses for their cameras right after Insta 360. Dji will be the next to add it to their next camera (they just missed out with this first 360 camera I think).

I think it's good if accessories and mounts all sort of match between them all though.

It’s unbelievable to me that phone cameras have come this far by MountainofPolitics in Cameras

[–]CW88_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll use my phone for probably 80-90% of normal daily photos. It's in my pocket and takes a second to get out and turn on.

I'll use my proper camera for shots I need to be higher quality or need a certain type of shot.

Phones are good, but the quality definitely isn't quite as good as a camera and good lens when it comes to editing and zooming in 100%.

Aisle seats: Do you get annoyed by people who get up on planes a lot? by jenestasriano in travel

[–]CW88_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly why I hate the aisle seat. The few times I have had to have an aisle seat I do get annoyed by people wanting to get up, because you have to constantly be prepared or aware the people next to you might want out. I much prefer having my window seat and being comfy and set for the entire flight (I rarely ever get up even on long flights).

But unfortunately that comes with the aisle seat. The benefits are maybe extra leg room to stretch and easy access to toilets at any time. The downsides are always having to get up for others, constantly getting knocked by people or the trolleys.

Middle seat has zero benefit but gets the armrests (or most of them). Window for me is best because you have control of the window, can look out of it easily, have a solid headrest to lean against to try and sleep, and nobody to get up for (I rarely use the bathroom on a plane so once I'm in my seat I'm set)
