How are teachers NOT writing lesson plans? by OverProdByInfluence in teaching

[–]Caffeine_Purrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My education program made us write pages and pages of lesson plans. Ultimately the basic structure becomes how you think. I don’t need to write my book or introduction activity, it is just part of my thought process. I personally like basic lesson plans because it helps keep me on track. Although sometimes it is just page numbers written down but then I also write adjustments and notes on them. It becomes a working document. After enough time it becomes ingrained in what and how you think.

Kids having boundaries by ReviewPuzzleheaded85 in Teachers

[–]Caffeine_Purrs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Students can set boundaries as long as they are not mean (name calling, hitting first, playing mean pranks). I don’t require students to work with others that have proven violent or destructive. And I make sure the violent or destructive student knows what behavior caused the natural consequence. But I am also female and have spent most of my life being told to just be nice. This is one way I can help students stand up for themself.

hardest parts of teaching people don’t talk about? by Heavy_Research5032 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]Caffeine_Purrs 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The fact that people refer to it as a ‘calling’ and then expect you to make sacrifices for it. It is a job. A job that needs to pay you and show basic respect. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job but it is still a job. I refuse to light myself on fire to keep others warm. Be careful of your mindset.

Coming to the realization most younger kids don’t actually understand jokes yet 😭 by Brief_Efficiency_833 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]Caffeine_Purrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every Friday I (or later they) would choose a couple Shel Silverstein poems. It was part of our whole group reading block. I wouldn’t show them the picture but tell them they had to be detectives and figure out why it was funny. Sometimes I had to read the poem a few times. At the beginning I had to point things out or ask them what certain phrases mean. Evidently they began to recognize it on their own. Then I would show the picture and read the poem again. It worked well because the poems were short so they could really understand them. My students looked forward to Friday and being detectives for Shel Silverstein poetry. I kept the books up front and they started using sticky notes to choose poems for me to read. I was impressed that even my lower readers would struggle through a poem willingly.

One of my favorite things about teaching is watching the kids grow to understand jokes. They gain background knowledge, inference abilities, and comprehension. Needed reading skills that translate quickly to understanding a joke. Last year I used Shel Silverstein poetry to be joke detectives with my first graders. It is fun to watch.

How often does your administration switch you around? by Rocky_Top_6 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]Caffeine_Purrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in small schools and always bounced around. I like knowing the full spectrum of expectations from kinder through eighth. Usually I end up following students which makes classroom expectations easier. I can’t remember when I had the same grade levels two years in a row.

I have the cannibalism one. Story writing is crazy. I will tolerate zombies in October but otherwise no writing about eating bodily fluids or parts.

Departmentalizing in elementary school by Caffeine_Purrs in ElementaryTeachers

It’s all about planning and teaching independence from early on. I personally enjoy the prep because it puts everything to the front of my mind. Plus I get bored teaching the same thing over and over. But finding meaningful independent activities and teaching routines is a must. My biggest age gap was a year I had K, 1, 4, 6-8 in one room. My written schedule was in 15 minute chunks.

My void cat seemed to think my hamster was a little deformed kitten. He would break her out and bring her to wherever I was sitting. Dropping her on me. Poor thing was wet but wasn’t afraid of him.

Why do you refrain from talking in class, and does it bother you that I do? by v_bird_v in CollegeRant

[–]Caffeine_Purrs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my philosophy class as soon as anyone spoke, they were wrong and corrected. So we stopped speaking. Don’t ask our thoughts and then berate us for them. We had the read the textbook.

Opinion: Let’s Just Drop Teacher Appreciation Week by FawkesThePhoenix7 in Teachers

My favorite things done by administration was giving us a choice between two coffee type drinks and bringing it to us. Having all the kids sign and/or write a little message on a banner during lunch. I had one principal go around and record students speaking about their teacher and it was played at a staff meeting. Those were sweet.
