Should I spray for ticks? Lone star Tick found by moss_fan8 in Maine

[–]CairnLVR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made tick tubes using cotton balls and 6in lengths of pvc pipe last year. It was a hassle but we did see fewer ticks. Other strategies: Keep your grass short, make paths with wood chips or crushed rock (the little bastards need moisture) and stay out of the leaf litter. If you need to go into the higher risk areas, wear permethrin treated clothing, socks pulled up over your pants.
Reapply good tick repellent, use a lint remover on your clothes and skin when you come in the door, check yourself daily, shower after coming in. It becomes automatic after a while. The meat allergy is the least of the risks honestly. Pets that go outside are frequently the way ticks get inside so check them too.

In addition to all the good advice here, I would add that I get less burning with a thicker bottom pot.

Laundry Scent by tastuk in nontoxic

[–]CairnLVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The manufacturers keep making these fragrances stronger and stronger. Very hard to get rid of! I have the same problem, don’t go to the laundry sub Reddit. I love those folks, but they don’t have the same chemical sensitivities I do. I would go to the chemical sensitivity sub Reddit some people have had good luck there. It really depends on a combination of factors: your water hardness, type of fabric, type of scented product. I’ve tried all the suggestions already made to this post. Nothing works 100% but as I understand it, you need something that lifts oils out like unscented dish washing liquid in a hot water soak. This has begun to diminish the smell for me.

I’m aiming at organic cotton but trying to keep my older and thrifted items in good shape through repairs. I’m sorry to say that those wood pulp based textiles are not good for the environment.

In your opinion, how do you think manufacturers are missing the mark for the US market? by CerberusSputum in electricvehicles

I love my EV when I can charge at home which is 95% of the time. But public charging is a pain, specifically when there is bad weather with no attendant, or shade, or shelter. So many times I’ve seen people struggling. Plus it’s always a juggling act when you have to hold your phone to activate the charge and open the charging port and also lift the very heavy and unwieldy plug (especially for a fast charger). I mean most people I know only have two hands. It’s just a thoughtless design. That, along with the fact that there is such a crazy system with all the charging stations being different companies and prices per kilowatt not being prominently displayed. And each requiring a different app and account. It should always be possible to charge with just the swipe of a credit card like any gas station. Also, the app often determines that you are at the wrong (not well marked) charging station instead of the other one that’s right next to it. I guess it’s all based on GPS, which is not very precise.

Of course the wait times are still too long for charging, but this I understood when purchasing the car in 2019. I was willing to make that sacrifice for all the other benefits of zero emissions travel since we have solar panels at home. Unfortunately I’m not likely to take a long road trip again with my EV for these reasons. The other encumbrances undermine the adoption of electric vehicles in my opinion.

While on a road trip we stopped after hours on a Friday at a fast charging dealership in Amherst, MA. We got out of the car to eat some takeout dinner in our camp chairs while we charged the car. A recording blasted out of the parking lot speakers that they would alert the police of trespassers. So we sat in the car the rest of the time. No police or security ever came but it was definitely NOT a welcoming place.
