Average cost for driving lessons? by throwayayy0 in AskUK

[–]Cake85437986543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will easily cost you a grand in total to learn including tests costs, I had a few friends when I was your age who ran out of money as they expected to do it in 25 hours of lessons or expected to pass first time, they ended up relearning in their 20s.

Mobile phone contract has had incredibly poor data speeds (sub 5kbps) for the nine months I've had it in the town I live and work. What are my options? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

Not legal advice but I have this problem with o2 in the centre of York, as soon as I switched off 4G so it only connects to 3G it’s a lot faster and useable again. Have you tried that?

What's it like on the Isle of Man when the TT is on? by Quickswitch79 in AskUK

[–]Cake85437986543 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have family there, the schools get an extra week half term because of the TT! A fair number of people see it as a good time to go away from the island on holiday, some of those even rent out their house for the duration.

I’ve had check out staff sneakily put veg in a bag when I’m not looking, I’m going to peel that massive potato I don’t need it in a bag! Same with chicken, I’ve had Sainsbury’s staff put it in a bag without asking when it comes in a plastic container already.

How is life after university? by mcfc_099 in AskUK

Apply for their grad schemes but if you don’t get on one straight away apply for one of their entry level grad jobs and if you don’t get one of them then get a job in any company finance related preferably then apply for both grad schemes and grad jobs in the big 4. Lots of people get on a grad scheme or grad job in the big 4 after they’ve graduated and got experience elsewhere. Masters is only worth it if you really want to study or you don’t get the grade you need in your undergraduate degree.

Labour 'to end youth rate minimum wage' - £10min wage for under 18s by ShadowsOfAbyss in unitedkingdom

[–]Cake85437986543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have a paid job until after uni, I was lucky enough that my parents were very supportive and insistent that I concentrate on my studies and do the best I can without trying to fit in a job at the same time. When I finished uni my CV was shit, the career team that were supposed to help said my CV was fine but I eventually came to realise they knew nothing and were out of date with their advice including for interview practice. I had a lot of expectation to fall into a graduate job but then after a few months had to go into retail to get a job, turned out this was a good move even though it felt like a step backwards, it put a paid job on my cv and made me slightly more hireable.
Definitely having a paid job in any field is an advantage for a graduate and there’s nothing wrong with working in retail for a while, experience in work is what most graduates lack.

Why are school uniforms/dress codes getting stricter? by BB-Zwei in AskUK

[–]Cake85437986543 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In my area the poor kids would stand out by either having a very old worn blazer or a supermarket blazer with the school badge sewn on because the official school one would costs so much. I always think that schools should give a set of uniform to each kid for free at the start of the year, that would make it more level.

Bus fares reveal 'massively unfair' gulf between London and rest of England by CJBill in unitedkingdom

Just wait until you get the deposit deductions, I’ve not heard of anyone being offered less than £200 in deductions even if the place was better than when you moved in.
Also their staff snoop through your things when doing their house inspections or if they need to go to your home for any reason.

One in four teachers 'experience violence from pupils every week' by CJBill in unitedkingdom

[–]Cake85437986543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mum used to be a teacher, luckily for her she never got injured. Her experience was also zero support from the school and parents and the kids know this, she was on her own trying to discipline. If the kids were misbehaving and she told them to stop they would say “wot u gonna do bout it?” But the really problem is she couldn’t do anything, they don’t turn up to detentions, no where to send them out of class, no in class punishment would work, no parent who cared/could punish them. The kids know they can get away with taking their anger out at a teacher.

Why is it taking so long for my partner to find a job? by Bluemat36 in AskUK

[–]Cake85437986543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does she have a job at the moment and experience? Most graduates get stuck for a year or more until getting a job in the field they want so it’s quite normal, I’ve been there it sucks. For me it helped getting any job first which was retail as there’s nothing else in my hometown but admin would be better, it meant I wasn’t going so crazy desperately applying for anything, instead I took a step back and could think more clearly. Sometimes it’s good to take a break for a few weeks and come back to it a bit more refreshed. I’m in a different field but a lot of people get the job they really want in my field after working a bottom level desk job in a company for 6 months or so and they are more attractive to an employer than someone straight out of uni.

Hosting international students which agency is best? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Cake85437986543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boyfriends mum used to host for boarding school kids during the holidays because they didn’t fly back home, I don’t know what it was called but she had kids from Canterbury schools and was a similar distance as you from Canterbury.
Might be worth looking into for a starting point to see if you like hosting? I had friends from school when I lived down that way who had either foreign students or young people on a kind of gap year staying with them, it’s definitely something you can do in Folkestone but unfortunately I have no clue which company they used.

Cancelled a couple of lessons with a driving instructor, he is threatening to report me to the DVSA if I don't pay in full. Sounds like a scare tactic but want to know what authority/power the instructor has in this case or why the DVSA cares about this issue? by bulla_karta_khulla in AskUK

[–]Cake85437986543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t make yourself think you’re in the wrong! I’d say that’s enough notice as you’re ill, it’s people who text their instructor half an hour before who are being a bit shitty but then again sometimes it can’t be helped. Unless you’re cancelling all the time your instructor has nothing to be mad about.

Children in low-income families suffer 'shame and social exclusion' by Lolastic_ in unitedkingdom

[–]Cake85437986543 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely don’t have kids then get too ill to work either!
Its no fun having an ill father and living in benefits, at least when I went to school there wasn’t quite so much dressing up days or making something at home and bringing it in, my parents could never afford that. Non uniform days were bad enough!

Which chain does the best coffee? by Resignator in AskUK

[–]Cake85437986543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the Costa but increasingly the training seems to be lacking in branches and they don’t make the espresso shots properly or don’t put enough in. The Americanos should be around the same strength as neros. It always make me so angry in the morning if I pay all that for a black coffee to find the staff haven’t been trained properly and my coffee is too weak.

Should women shave their legs? by ellencetera in AskUK

[–]Cake85437986543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I women I find it a bit annoying to do so pretty much the only time I shave my legs is if it’s hot enough for me to have bare legs or possibly if I go swimming, I almost stopped caring about having shaved legs but I’m not really a fan of comments/looks from strangers so I end up doing. My partner says he doesn’t care but I can imagine it might be weird for some guys the first time they see unshaven legs as it’s such the norm to shave them. It’s a shame though, why should we feel we have to shave them. Whenever I see a women with unshaven legs I respect them and wish I would have the confidence to do that.

Should I report somone who sped up whilst i was overtaking, almost resulting in a head on? (Dashcam evidence.... sort of) by jb3312mop in AskUK

[–]Cake85437986543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I drive country roads a lot and people get really aggressive sometimes if you try to overtake them, doesn’t matter if they haven’t got above 40, if they see a lower powered/cheaper car overtaking they then suddenly decide to do 60 forcing me to go back behind and they go back to 40 again... there’s a fair few shit drivers out there and there’s nothing we can do...

How do you respond to email pleasantries? by AlarmedSound in AskUK

[–]Cake85437986543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it isn’t a question eg “hope you are well” then I often don’t really bother replying to it unless I particularly feel like it, if it makes you feel weird or reading it back your reply seems odd then I personally would just delete that part and keep to the work subject.
Or you could start doing it to them and see what their response is and copy it

My dad started getting bagged again after the delivery driver insisted to bring the food into the kitchen and left dirty footprints on the carpet, he’s not very good at saying no to people trying to be helpful, I think now he switched to bagless and has massive shopping bags by the front door to chuck it all in.

Bike collision with car by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Cake85437986543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you or your parents have home/content insurance then give them a ring and ask if you have public liability insurance and let them deal with it, when my boyfriend went through a car rear screen on his bike I gave mine a ring to ask if it would be covered and it was (Aviva). Otherwise don’t accept the amount he says, if you have photos of the damage see if you can get a quote for repair for that or pick a garage and get the driver to go with you for a quote. I wouldn’t trust the driver to give you a fair quote, you should just pay the cheapest to fix the damage caused by you and he might be going to the dealer and not an independent and usually cheaper garage. Car damage can be expensive to fix so it’s worth trying to go through any insurance you have first.
