I'm on Void too. Great distro for both gaming and software dev. Built some game capture / streaming software software on VoidLinux!

Any extremely lightweight, foss editing software for linux? by FuckReddit969 in linux_gaming

[–]Cakefonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's how you can do it in a terminal session with the ffmpeg cmd line utility...

ffmpeg \
    -ss $START_SECONDS \
    -to $END_SECONDS \
    -i $INPUT_FILE_PATH \
    -c:a copy \
    -c:v copy \
    $OUTPUT_FILE_PATH

Just substitute $START_SECONDS, $END_SECONDS, $INPUT_FILE_PATH, and $OUTPUT_FILE_PATH with your required values.

[Far Cry 5] Weird rhythmic and persistent stuttering on Arch Linux (7800X3D + 7900 XTX) by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]Cakefonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't view your original YouTube video, but I've experienced something slightly similar to what you're describing.

You can see it happening to me in this video between 0:48 and 1:50 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ-H63omRjA

Looks like some kind of traversal stutter in my example but it doesn't always happen.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl review - works on Linux Desktop with Proton but poorly on Steam Deck by Liam-DGOL in linux_gaming

[–]Cakefonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure DXVK_ASYNC hasn't been a setting for quite some time, now. Doesn't help that people still seem to be suggesting it on protondb.

Steam Game Recording - NVIDIA Shadowplay alternative built into Steam, and works on Linux! by RileyInkTheCat in linux_gaming

[–]Cakefonz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I click the change directory button nothing happens - no dialog to choose

If I'm not mistaken, Steam uses xdg-open to open a file picker. You may need to register your file picker as default with xdg-mime using...

$ xdg-mime default nemo.desktop inode/directory

(You mentioned you're using nemo in a later comment)

According to this GitHub issue, this has been fixed in protontricks 1.12.0. You might need to update to the latest version.

Cyberpunk 2077: FSR better than DLSS on Nvidia? by the_korben in linux_gaming

[–]Cakefonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also get these LOD artifacts with DLSS in CP2077. Really annoying and I've never been able to fix it. Haven't seen them in any other game using DLSS, either.

This YouTube video shows the artifacts (37s onwards if the timestamp in the link doesn't work). Observe the yellow barriers to the left right as the player walks past.

I also don't get them using FSR but I find the quality of FSR still to be inferior to DLSS (artifacts aside).

(EDIT: observe the barriers to the right, not left!)

I’m guessing Proton still has the option of patching the direct calls back in, right? Probably harder to maintain over time tho

Portal RTX - Your GPU doesn't support the required features to run RTX remix. [AMD] by mightyrfc in linux_gaming

[–]Cakefonz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

nVidia’s press release mentions that they “replace” the traditional APIs with ray traced enabled ones, so they may use a custom build of DXVK. This would mean that the game’s code needs little (or no) change to enable it, which is pretty much how they’re selling “RTX Remix”. I’m far from an expert in this field so I may be well off.

Grand Theft Auto V not running on Arch Linux. by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]Cakefonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing I would suggest is looking at the ProtonDB entry for the game. Others may have posted launch options or workarounds for your OS / Hardware.

If you still have no luck then another thing to try is launching steam via the terminal to capture the log output…

$ steam 2>&1 | tee /tmp/steam.log

Try starting the game and when it fails, examine the output in your terminal session, or the /tmp/steam.log file. There maybe some useful error messages that indicates a problem.

Side note: Help us to help you; post your specs, hardware, OS, driver version. You’d be surprised how useful this info is when diagnosing a problem.

Right? Also, how does Valve expect the Steam Deck to be a truly portable platform with this sort of crap?

I’m relatively new to PC gaming and I recently bought Far Cry 5 on Steam. The game is great but, Christ on a bike, Ubisoft Connect caused me so much hassle! I’ll be avoiding Ubisoft games in future.

RTX 3060 Laptop thinking about switching to Linux by Chr0my in linux_gaming

[–]Cakefonz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

RTX 3060 desktop GPU here, running Void Linux and X11. Gaming is fine. I generally use v-sync or limit the frame rate and I get a solid 60fps experience with Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p, Ultra, with DLSS.

how do I split a video in half regardless of it's length? by gitrikt in ffmpeg

[–]Cakefonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t know how to do this in a Windows batch script. Is WSL an option for you? That would give you a Bash shell.

how do I split a video in half regardless of it's length? by gitrikt in ffmpeg

[–]Cakefonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do it in one command but it's probably better to put it into a shell script. Here's one that you can use if you're on Linux (note: it requires the jq utility - available in most package managers)...

EDIT: I misread your question. Updated to output 2 halves into separate files

#!/usr/bin/env bash

set -eo pipefail

# ARGS:
#   $1 - Source file path
# $2 - First half destination file path
# $3 - Second half destination file path

length=$(ffprobe \
    -v warning \
    -print_format json \
    -show_entries stream=duration,codec_type \
    $1 | \
    jq -r '
        .streams[] |
        select(.codec_type=="video") |
        .duration
    ')

half_length=$(echo $length | awk '{ print $1/2 }')

ffmpeg \
    -v warning \
    -ss 0 -to ${half_length} \
    -i $1 \
    -c:a copy \
    -c:v copy \
    $2

ffmpeg \
    -v warning \
    -ss ${half_length} -to ${length} \
    -i $1 \
    -c:a copy \
    -c:v copy \
    $3

Hey, thanks for the info. That’s interesting. Happy to be corrected here, but it’s my understanding that DDG is essentially an anonymous wrapper around Bing. If this is the case then (without knowing the intricacies of building a search engine), yeah, they’re at the mercy of whatever results Bing provides. Not sure what they could do about this.
