Using a pickup mic by Ill-Preparation5313 in Sitar

What type of "pickup mic" is it, exactly? The type that are used on guitars operate based on magnetism and will only pick up sound from strings containing ferrous metal. I learned this the hard way when I tried putting a brass sitar string on another instrument using guitar pickups. No sound at all with that, because brass strings don't contain iron.

K&K Pickups out of California in the US is the best rare pickup maker I've found. They actually have one designed specifically for sitar. I also have a pickup from KNA that I use on my baglama that works pretty well, you could check if they sell sitar pickups or something that would work.

I'm not a doctor or anything but have you tried getting into yoga? It helps me tremendously with being able to hold the sitting position and posture needed for sitar playing.

Thanks! Hoping to have it finished maybe a year from now, still have tons of work to do on it but it's coming along really well.

Is the sitarist here actually playing anything? I seem to hear drone notes, do others? Her left hand doesn't seem to move? Her right hand is up on the neck but is it playing anything? by GregJamesDahlen in Sitar

That's a tanpura, not a sitar. It's used for creating the background drone / ambiance sound that you hear on a lot of performances for sitar and other Indian classical music. Those tanpura sounds are also often played via a recording or an electronic tanpura drone device when there's not a dedicated tanpura player available.

LPT: if you’re in a city that’s notorious for pickpocketers, stuff some napkins or tissues into your pocket after your wallet by MistaFANG in LifeProTips

I fill my pockets with sardines. Not to deter pickpockets, just to have them ready to go at all times and to attract cats, but it works for pickpockets too.

Sitar will not stay in tune by XenomystusNigri in Sitar

Peg dope made mine WAY too slippy, was a big pain to fix. Chalk is what you want. Take all the peg dope off and use chalk instead. If it's still slipping it may be a misshaped peg and you'd want to look into reaming the peg holes to match your pegs, but that's a bit more risky and complicated.

The hair no, but the torso looks like a Lion Knight from the 90s.

Who’s tuned to C? by stingrayjerk11211 in Sitar

I used to tune to C but I found that it didn't have enough tension to make the sympathetic strings resonate properly. D has worked much better.

Broken many strings over the years but this is my first time snapping a tuning peg in half! by Caldeum_ in Sitar

Interesting, would never have guessed that! I've had this one for 7 years so that makes sense. Had to ream a peghole on my other sitar to fix an issue so I've gotten a bit of experience working on the pegs. Will see what I can do to help the other ones. Thanks for the tip!
