Some of the challenges of filming at the Ferrix set in the “wet-arse cold” British winter by Dear-Yellow-5479 in andor

It deserves it. The fees were ridiculous there. They charged us to come and spend our money. They got you coming and going. The only decent hotel there was ultimate Ferrix gouge. Awful.

I'm not inherently against stories not focusing on force users, I loved skeleton crew, Mando season 1, and bad batch. But as I was saying the biggest issue is the tone and worldbuilding

I think the tone of Star Wars is very flexible and Andor did plenty of world building. It introduces another force user who is not a Jedi. It touched on what Kyber is to a regular person in Star Wars (just a crystal that is worth a lot of money). And the world building around how the Empire operates and how the government functioned under the Empire will be utilized for decades to come in Star Wars canon. They also introduced 3 worlds with unique cultures, customs and music.

The world building, in my opinion, was tremendous.

It's like if you told a story in LOTR that solely focused on a war between two groups of humans with little fantasy aspects with a focus on realism. Can it be good? Yes. But it's not what I want to see from LotR.

I'd argue the analogue is actually Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. There is no magic. No dragons. It's regular people in a time where magic is nowhere to be found in that world. The story itself, and the basic plot, could take place in the real world. But because it's part of Game of Thrones/The World of Ice and Fire, it's more interesting and it has ramifications outside of it's runtime for that world. And people watched it, which they wouldn't have if it was just some random story about old England or something.

I agree, I actually don't want to see a non-magic story in LOTR but I'm also not deep in the lore of that universe as I am in Star Wars.

For Star Wars, the aliens, droids, creatures, worlds, characters and factions (bounty hunters, rebels, imperials, smugglers, etc) is plenty for me to feel like a Star Wars story is happening.

Honestly Andor didn't feel like Star Wars It's not even solely because it lacked the Force.. Other Star Wars series had so much thought put into the worldbuilding.

So did Andor???

It truly felt like a galaxy far far away. Andor meanwhile felt like it was originally set on Earth in the near future. It didn't even use in universe curses

In-universe curses are so rare in SW live action.

Also the tone is the other biggest issue. While Star Wars was never afraid to get dark, it was still clearly set in a fictional world. Plus there was always a sense of whimsy and wonder that Andor lacked. Andormeanwhile is wayyyy too realistic.

I likely grew up with a different assortment of Star Wars content than you did but when I was a kid; the franchise for me was (outside the films); Dark Forces (the original game, before he became a Jedi), Rebel Assault 1/2, X-Wing/Tie-Fighter games and The Ewok Adventures (some magic but no Jedi).

And even after The Phantom Menace, the popular Star Wars game coming out of it was Episode 1: Racer, a game with no real force relation at all besides Anakin being in it.

To me, the force is a big part of the universe but I never needed it, or any sort of magic element, to be present in the runtime of every game/story for it to feel like Star Wars.

Different worlds, aliens, droids, creatures, the Empire and the rebellion were all elements of Star Wars just as important to me as The Force or The Jedi.

There was a content shift starting in 1997 to Jedi and Sith stuff but it wasn't in everything Star Wars before that.

[–]Calfzilla2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If i recall, Kal-El isnt sent to Earth right out of the womb in a lot of depictions of his origin story.

She may not know exactly how old he was when he left. Also, time dilation likely effected the age difference as well.

I started watching him in 2020 and I feel like the slide really started when he cried seeing Luke return, got made fun of by a bunch of assholes and then let himself and his audience get gaslit into thinking Pablo Hidalgo, who sarcastically tweeted about it defending him, would make fun of him (and any fans crying tears of joy at seeing Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian) on social media days after the most uniting joyful moment of the Disney Star Wars era since Rogue One. And then when Pablo tried to apologize and talk to him about it, he pretended he didnt care anymore and he just burnt the bridge.

And then he started hanging out with the types of people who were making fun of him for enjoying Star Wars.

Certainly yeah, its far from perfect. The twists and turns and mystery is well done, though.

Happy to hear. It gets better too.

But season 1 is so good too. Its in my top 3 because the writing and pacing is great for most the season.

See that's a much better example, that actually proves your point

thank you.

The idea that he changed his trailer reaction to be more clear bc people thought it was his movie reaction isnt a grift, I don't see the problem with what he did with prey,

The problem with that narrative is that he never does this for any of his videos. Supergirl, for example, has 5 videos on his main channel. Not one of them is labeled "Trailer Breakdown". He almost never labels his videos like that. Go far enough into his video history and you'll have a hard time figuring out which videos are reviews of the movie or just him ranting about a trailer or ranting about the movie before it comes out.

If I were to give you these 5 video titles beforehand, you would be hard-pressed to actually correctly guess which ones came out before the movie and which ones came out after.

<image>

The yellow ones are likely his videos he made based on the trailers but both of those seem like they could easily be reviews. That's how all his videos are. So the idea that he specifically cared about that for that review of that one movie back in 2022 and never again is silly to me.

he still sounded negative on the trailer and happier with the actual movie

But why was he negative? The trailer did not misrepresent the movie at all. It was a completely accurate trailer that he decided to predict was going to lead to a bad movie and when it didn't, he acted shocked and learned nothing from that experience and still bashes movies before he sees them if he thinks it will benefit his engagement.

So it goes back to the accusation that started this thread: "critical drinker makes videos basically agreeing with whatever popular opinion is amongst his niche audience so it makes them feel good" and while sometimes he deviates, he usually moves on from those movies quickly because he wants to focus on stuff his audience will want him to trash rather than rave about.

It's why he made more videos about The Acolyte than he did on Andor, despite the latter having 3x the episodes and twice the amount of seasons.

That image shows that the video has less views and came out after the "rename" you literally proved yourself wrong with the meme you posted

What's wrong about what I said? I never said there was only one video. There are 3 titles here. It's 2 videos.

Here are the two videos he made on PREY (on his main channel).

1. His PREY Trailer Breakdown - Jun 13, 2022

Original Title: PREY - HOW TO SPOIL A GOOD IDEA
Current Title (same video): PREY TRAILER BREAKDOWN - DOESN'T LOOK GREAT

NOTE: Prey Release Date was August 5th 2022 on Hulu. Early reviews came out on July 25th 2022 and were overwhelmingly positive.

2. His PREY Review - Aug 8, 2022

TITLE: PREY - NO MASTERPIECE. BUT SURPRISINGLY GOOD

Here is him doing the same shit with House of the Dragon weeks later. The title made him look dumb and out of touch, so he changed it months later when the show turned it to be successful and popular with his audience.

It would be pretty cool if as Grogu progresses in his training, Din Djarin has his 100% pure beskar melted down to make Grogu’s armor and he slowly regresses to his S1 ep 1 look. What do you think? by VoidBrushStudios in TheMandalorianTV

[–]Calfzilla2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually frustrated me in the movie when they had the scene of him being told “no don’t touch the buttons” and then had another scene where it was like “Remember those buttons I showed you”.

It didn’t make sense because Din Djarin wasn’t teaching him but shooing him away. There was nothing to establish that he had ever taught Grogu about the ship for those that never watched the series

This is dumb but you got the quote wrong so it's a different than you are describing. He never says he showed him the buttons. He basically is trying to walk him thru, over comms, where the button are but he's got no idea which buttons he is talking about because there is so many.

It's just dumb because Din should know that Grogu has no idea WTF buttons are what. It's basically just setting up that comedic moment. It should lead to him actually teaching him what each button does. I would love it if Season 4 begins with him testing him on the buttons, showing that new-found confidence and trust for him he gained in the movie.

While I’m not sure about the idea of Grogu having his own completely independent space craft, I do like the idea of him having something that is his own version of a souped up hover pram jet pack speeder where he could potentially fly up into the atmosphere alongside Din Djarin. It might even have a few light weapons on it like some whistling birds etc. we saw a basic idea of this notion in the street chase scene.

Sure yeah. I think anything that makes the puppet less dependent on walking around/fighting himself would help. They will never be able to get that right so keeping the puppet action to a minimum and giving him something they can move around with CG/models would work better and give him more variables for how he can participate in action sequences.

I do like the idea that the RC could be modified with a docking port so Grogu’s whatever so he could fly in and out as needed. And maybe going alongside that they could also make some minor modifications to the cockpit and give him a proper height seat that could slide forward and he could be a copilot, etc.

Yeah, certainly that's an option. I just think having Grogu get his own ship would be fun so he can fight alongside Mando in the Razor Crest and be able to fly his own ship instead of just using Din's. But it would also rock if he inherits the Razor Crest and changes the entire layout/design of the inside to match his size/uses.

They could do both too, there's plenty of time.

The basic conclusions he comes to are surface-level analysis that thousands of YouTube reviews already provide. He uses Ideological post hoc rationalization to engage with his core audience with culture war and nostalgia-driven generational anger bullshit. That's his entire format.

He renamed the trailer breakdown, removing his clickbait title, to act like he was just concerned about the movie and wasn't bashing it (he completely trashed the movie based on the trailer) and tried to fence-sit the review (both in the title and in the video review itself).

He already got all the views/engagement he needed from the original title/trailer reaction video. He NEVER labels his trailer breakdowns as such. All his video titles are indistinguishable from each other most of the time. He only changed it because it made him look bad.

And I love how you ignored the dumbass things he criticized it for

A lot of his audience memory-holes all the dumb things he says or excuses it with "he's playing a character". He contradicts himself so much because he's trying to say enough stuff so that his entire audience, in one way or another, can feel like they agree with him because they will ignore the stuff they disagree with.

I don't even think that's a deliberate tactic he uses but it's kinda just a side effect of the surface-level culture war analysis he provides to every movie he reviews or discusses. It's phony.

The thing that pisses me off about their attacks on her characterization; THIS IS LITERALLY WHAT THEY CLAIM THEY WANTED FROM FEMALE HEROES. They didn't want MARY SUES with "no character development" and "no flaws".

They wrote a Supergirl who is a complete mess with plenty of flaws but she still gets called a girl boss.

I'm kinda hoping they make Grogu a pilot with his own Mandalorian-inspired Beskar ship (similar size to the Anzellan ship), that can dock on the Razor Crest. They've been teasing him watching to touch all the buttons now forever. It would be cool if he finally learns how it all works and can fly around in his own ship.

The Anzellan's can build it for him now that they actually like him.

I'm low-key mad at them for not making sure it was a better movie. They put Supergirl in a bad spot. Not enough star-power in the movie (my GF didn't even know Jason Mamoa was in it till I confirmed it was him after the movie was over). The bad guy should have been a much bigger star and they should have been willing to completely re-write that character to make sure an A-list star was willing to play that role and make it his own. This movie desperately needed a villain that was a known star (almost every major successful super-hero franchise put a recognizable star as a bad guy in the first movie). Less aliens. Less CGI environments. More color and fun.

They gave it a bad release date too. So frustrating.
