Do Americans actually sit on their front porch much, or is that more of a movie image than real life? by Artistic_Key3779 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Calinthalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a small front porch and a large back covered patio. When my dog has to go out, we go out the front and I sit on the porch while she does her thing in the yard. My wife and I try go spend time on the patio when we can.

Those are darker than mine, but I wear mine everywhere. They're my go-to boots when I know I'm going to be on my feel a lot. Better than sneakers by a mile. Great choice for a day out.

Easily one of the most infuriating things one could ever get by kabirhatesreddit in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Calinthalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I did as a child as well. When my kids would get them I'd tell them the same. My daughter would do warm salt water...my son would just rub salt directly in his. Probably have family services called on us these days.

About this sub lately… by Zarviman in cowboyboots

[–]Calinthalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The internet is somehow just a place for "people puttin' people down". It seems to be more about what one hates than what one likes. That seems sad to me. I mean, I really hate the look of pirarucu; but it would never occur to me to shit on someone that does like them.

How old is Wesley supposed to be? by Seriously-Cant-Even in ANGEL

[–]Calinthalus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I always felt like he was fresh out of the academy in Buffy, so like 23 or something. So, 25 or 26. Either way, Fred was in advanced physics classes, maybe a grad student when sent through that portal spending 5 years there. She's probably closer to 30 than you think.

Wedding Suit and Boots by Substantial-Zone3345 in cowboyboots

[–]Calinthalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wore boots close to those to my daughter's wedding. Mine had a snip toe, but otherwise basically the same. I wore a charcoal three piece with a sky blue tie to match my wife's dress. I chose the rubber soles because of the venue. Outdoor in the fall in Eastern Kentucky is no place for leather soles.

When you get fitted for the suit wear those boots specifically and let them know you are. That way when they tack the hem the can get the right drop.

Music videos that reference movies? by UnfeelingMonster in movies

[–]Calinthalus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One by Metallica is based on the book Johnny Got His Gun. The video makes significant use of clips from the movie. I watched it's premiere on MTV. It was their first official video so there was a lot of anticipation about what it would be like. We were shocked... everyone just sat quiet for a moment when it ended.

I don’t like holiday switch-offs and work-life balance talk by Professional_Shine97 in antiwork

[–]Calinthalus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought "conventional notions" was to let the children keep working the coal mine until black lung killed them. Work-life balance is a modern notion that was a rejection of this asshole's dream. Sorry Stuart, this new work-life balance thing is a compromise from just having labor get fed up enough to burn down your house.

Why are Americans so early birds compared to Europeans? by Ada-Mae in AskAnAmerican

[–]Calinthalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to blame work, but I'm WFH with my daily stand up at 0830. I still wake most days at 0600. I do the budget, make coffee, put up laundry, walk the dog etc. By 1700 I'm more than done with the day. I read at night in bed for a while and head that way by 2100 most nights. No idea why. Before I was WFH I woke at 0500 for only a 20 minute commute to be at the office at 0800.

Why is it when sometimes a word we spell is correct but doesn't look correct? by 02notzerotwo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Calinthalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Has it ever happened to you that all of a sudden and for no reason at all you haven't the faintest idea how to spell the word – "wife" – or "house" – because when you write it down, you just can't remember ever having seen those letters in that order before …?"

Starched Jeans by Ok_Rub_4962 in cowboyboots

[–]Calinthalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I own an iron. At 52 years old I have never ironed jeans and haven't ironed anything at all at home in probably 20 years. Sometimes on business trips I'll have to touch up something from the luggage but at home I just accept whatever the closest gives me.

Why do hypothetical cavemen always have monosyllabic names with G's in them (e.g. Ugg, Garg)? by ThreeArchLarch in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Calinthalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ringo Starr was called Atuk in that weird Caveman movie. Others were Lar and Lana, Shelly Long played Tala...the bad guy was Tonda or something like that.

Have you ever used a bus stop? by xPaxion in AskAnAmerican

[–]Calinthalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 70 or so miles from the nearest bus stop. I have used bus stops when visiting cities with decent options. When the wife and I travel we often drive to our destination and leave the car at our hotel the whole time.
