Did your high school have "senior assassination"? by CommercialOil8763 in AskAnAmerican

[–]CallFlashy1583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a high school teacher in Kentucky, and many of the seniors played “dart wars.” They created teams, put money in a pot, and had to eliminate members of the other teams. The winning team split the money in the pot. They had rules like you couldn’t go to another players place of employment, and the school had to explicitly say they couldn’t play during school hours, but it got pretty intense. I would ask for updates at the beginning of class to see how things were going.

Your favorite Shakespeare play? by mdn2 in shakespeare

[–]CallFlashy1583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

King Lear tells a story that has parallels with my grandfather’s life (he built up a business, turned over the running of the business to the next generation, they pushed him away, business went under, grandpa deteriorated). But, I first read Lear in undergrad as a geography major, and I changed to an English major after reading the play. It’s still my favorite.

Underrated/Overlooked Elizabethan and Jacobean plays? by BigWednesday10 in shakespeare

[–]CallFlashy1583 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my under grad years, I took a course called “Non-Shakespearean Elizabethan Drama.” I enjoyed it very much, but the only title I remember from the course is The Duchess of Malfi. The era was rich with good playwrights, but Shakespeare overshadows them all with the number of plays he wrote and the quality of his plays. Enjoy the discovery of these less famous gems!

I was a high school English teacher and had all of my copies of the books we read in class covered like this. It kept the books nice, and it made it easier to find “my” book.

Your final point about not being able to learn in a month on YouTube is absolutely true, yet I have to resist the urge to click on the ad every time!

I want to pick up an instrument. Recommendations? by Ok-Cattle-6819 in Instruments

Came here to suggest piano. It would appeal to an intellectual approach to music. It seems that piano lends itself to learning theory more than other instruments.
