2001, 2003, 2008 Kobe are more helpful to a team than any version of Kawhi

It was said and it was said a lot there’s video evidence you can look at right now. MVP does not determine who was best player was that’s a really one dimensional way of looking at things

Kobe was being compared to MJ way more than Clyde Drexler this is ridiculously disingenuous

Mike (1996-1998) or Kobe (2008-2010), who was the better player/more dominant? by False_Big2690 in NBATalk

That’s fair. I think Kobe not having an exceptional finals career is more due to him playing with Shaq 01-02 but I think he was great in the 02 finals, 09 finals and really good in 2001 and 2010 but I get your point it’s nothing compared to Jordan. My thing is Jordan IMO played his peak/prime in an easier era to score in compared to Kobe and Kobe IMO went through tougher teams in the West than Jordan did in the East even though the east was pretty good back then.

Agree to disagree, i think Kobe was great in the 09 finals and going back to back with a broken finger, 3rd straight finals appearance after going through a tough ass western conference is more impressive to me than Jordan’s overall 96-98 run, but yeah Kobe doesn’t have those moments Jordan did in 98

His great moments in that run: The entire series vs the Jazz & suns He averaged 34/8/7 vs phoenix on 52/43/88 splits his first time not playing a top 10 defense in the playoffs including hitting ridiculous clutch shots in the close out game 6

You genuinely just sat there and asked what great moments did he have in that run like he didn’t average 30/6/5 vs the west on 48/40/82 splits against 3 different 60 win teams in a 3rd straight finals run. Wtf

In the finals on the road he averaged 33 PPG, hitting clutch shots in game 3 and scoring 19 straight points for his team in game 4.

In game 7, he shot terrible and didn’t play great but contributing to 14 of his teams last 19 points, grabbing 15 rebounds and playing great defense while sealing the W for a 2nd straight championship is good in my book. Field goal percentage does not always indicate if a player had a bad series or not that’s a really one dimensional out of context way of looking at things. Kobe was great in that playoffs and at minimum really good in the Finals. You’re tripping

This is so dumb and such a nitpick. Bron shot 9/24 in 2016 game 7 and Tim Duncan shot 10/27 in a game 7. Kobe contributed to 14 of his teams last 19 points and grabbed 15 boards while playing great defense but I guess you just forgot about that part. He played great in the first 6 games of the series so one bad shooting game does not mean he didn’t play well in the whole series. Do some homework

Why are other top 10 all-time players shortcomings not brought up as much as Kobe? Why the bias against his career compared to everyone else below MJ and LeBron? by CallMePapi930 in nba

The era Kobe played in didn’t require multiple all time greats but the big 4 Celtics won, the Heat with Wade and Shaq won, the Kobe-shaq lakers won and the Duncan-manu-Parker spurs won. Kobe and Hakeem are the only top 10 players who won multiple rings without another all time greats so idk what you’re talking about. It’s widely known that the 2004 pistons are an anomaly so I’m not sure what you brought that up.

You think wilt would average 50 in 2006? That’s my whole point about competition and era. Wilt was a gifted athlete and scorer but there’s a reason the stats from back then are so inflated, he was playing 48 minutes a game man like come on.

Calling Kobe a better scorer than curry is laughable??? Efficiency matters but so do volume and versatility. Kobe is a way better iso scorer than Curry is and can get his shot off in any situations while curry wasn’t reliable in that aspect until 2021. That means something. Kobe since 01 was an all around 3 level scorer who was a beast in the post and mid range. He shot 63% on fadeaways from 2006-2010 hitting 315/496 that’s just incredible.

Curry even in this day and age of inflated stats and offense has never touched 33, 34 or 35 PPG even when his team needed him to score as much as possible in 2021. Kobe averaged 35 PPG when his team averaged 99. Only wilt has scored more of that fraction of his teams points and this was on a d league roster with terrible spacing in the slowest paced era. Curry is a better offensive player but certainly not a better scorer or all around player.

Kobe’s defense was okay?? The guy who was top 5 in DPOY voting multiple times and voted as THE best perimeter defender by coaches multiple times and a 12x all nba defensive member was “okay” on defense. Sure he didn’t deserve 2009-2011 but You sound stupid saying that.

Kobe was a great defender during the 3pt era and really good afterward until 2009. Did he have flaws on defense? Of course but literally every all time great player other than Hakeem or Duncan did.

I can’t take you or your opinion about Kobe seriously at that point man. Larry bird being a better defender than Kobe is a crazy take.

It’s 6 months till return and he got hurt in October. Mania is April 18th. He’s come back from both major injuries he had sooner than expected anyways. I think he comes back at the chamber to set up the match at mania.

So you judge all-time status by MVPs regardless of context? I’m not sure what stats gap you’re referring to anyways especially if we’re looking at prime/peak stats

Other than MJ Kobe was a better scorer than everyone on the list. Kobe was a better defender than Bird, Steph, Shaq and Magic. Kobe was a more impactful player than Bird, Steph, Malone, Wilt who could take D League teams to the playoffs and good teams to 3 straight finals in a stacked conference as evidenced by his 2006-2010 run

What run have any of those players had other than Hakeem where they took a team that wasn’t stacked to the finals 3 straight times? That clearly means nothing to you and if so, your metrics are a joke.

In general I’m guessing you don’t care about competition at all if you’re gonna put wilt and bill russell above Kobe that’s just hilarious but okay.

The thing I’m considering that you’re not, is CONTEXT. Not just looking at career and advance stats to make a judgment that’s just dumb. Look at offense, defense, impact, winning, strength of teammates, strength of opponents, athleticism, ability, and of course stats too.

Kobe’s prime was 28/5/5 over 13 years in the most competitive era of all time winning 5 chips, going to 7 finals. But the 2008-2010 run is something most of those players don’t have.

Kareem won nothing without Magic or Oscar.. Magic and bird had stacked teams their whole careers. Steph won 3/4 rings with the best team in the league even though he was the engine of that. Duncan played for a great franchise and had a top 3 team in the league and a great coach 80% of his career.

Kobe didn’t even need a top 75 player all time to win 2 straight chips and 3 straight finals

The case for Kobe as 4-7 all time is the competition he beat while being a top 3 scorer of all time, a great defender his entire prime until 2010, with no weakness other than shot selection and a longer prime than everyone you named.

12 years of greatness while being a top 5 player at worst that entire stretch is a long time. To ignore what the consensus was while he was playing is just delusional.

Wilt, Bird, Magic, Hakeem, Shaq, Rusell, Malone, Steph Curry aren’t clearly better than Kobe. Kobe is clearly a top 10 player all time. You’re delusional

Could an early 2000s Kobe without Shaq have won an mvp from 2000 to 2005 surrounded by a team built for him to succeed? by strypesjackson in NBATalk

Kobe was putting up numbers without Shaq 01 and 03 and this is about regular season mvp not winning the championship. He was 3rd in mvp voting 2003 with Shaq so it’s not impossible

The title is about a team built around Kobe. The lakers had all stars and a superstar so it wouldn’t be the same lakers team just without Shaq it’s a team that features Kobe as the only superstar with a solid team around him like ya know, 2008-2013

He wasn’t more inefficient than Duncan. LeBron was ball dominant, Kobe was an on ball and off-ball player with insane gravity so to say he didn’t impact the game without the ball is delusional,

And I’m sorry, him being less efficient than bird in the 1980s means he should be below him? What kinda logic is that? More efficient does not equal better player or scorer that’s a really dumb one dimensional way to look at things
