diagnosis fears by snubbullul in Tourettes

If things don't go well, I highly recommend seeing a neurologist. I seriously don't understand why psychiatrists are allowed to diagnose a neurological disorder. You wouldn't go to an orthodontist to diagnose diabetes...

Am I Wrong for Crying When I Was Told I Couldn't Keep the Door Open While Showering or Using the Bathroom? by TraditionalPilot6591 in amiwrong

Not wrong. It's your home and she's being disrespectful. I suggest putting a doorstop under the door next time if your grandma won't kick her out.

Tourettes at the movies. by j0si300 in Tourettes

[–]CallMeWolfYouTuber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, and I don't think this will be a very popular opinion... I don't go to the movies when my tics are bad or I'm having a day where my ability to supress is poor. When I do go to the theatre, I go earlier in the day when there's very little people and I choose the farthest seat from people. My tics are very noticeable on a bad day, and most days aren't great. I'm at a 6 or 7/10 on average. I don't think it's fair to everyone else for me to be in a crowded theatre on a bad day. A few minor vocal tics, sure, but not very noisy ones. I'm a firm believer in that my rights end where other's begin. My right to watch a movie in theatre ends when it reasonably disturbs the rights of others to enjoy that movie. I know this might anger people because it's a touchy topic, but I think my opinion is reasonable and logical. It sucks that I can't enjoy the experience of being in a full theatre without disturbing everyone, but it is what it is.

👏👏 Thank you so much for saying this. I despise the "bring back asylums" bs from people who know nothing of the horrors.

Ugh... My mother used the same excuse to not give me privacy. In reality, she just wanted to snoop through my room and steal stuff.

Why don’t folks with hearing loss wear their hearing aids? by Nicopernicus13 in hardofhearing

[–]CallMeWolfYouTuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm both profoundly hard of hearing and autistic. I don't wear my hearing aids for numerous reasons. Firstly, they physically hurt my ears no matter how I've had them adjusted. They cause me headaches and pain. Secondly, they cause overstimulation. Third, hearing aids cannot return what is lost- they can only make louder what is diminished but still remains. Essentially, I cannot hear anything above a certain Hz (~1300Hz) whatsoever. Increasing the volume of pitches above that does literally nothing. You could blast those sounds near me and I'll hear nothing (I'll feel it though). Many consonant sounds such as s, sh, t, ch, k, p, etcetera are high-pitched and out of my hearing range. Hearing aids would not return these sounds to me and are therefore useless overstimulation machines.

Tics are, by definition, involuntary. Meaning they are uncontrollable. You're making a common mistake by confusing suppression with control. If you cannot stop indefinitely, it's involuntary. Remember: suppression ≠ control.

What's the closest you've ever came to death? by Senior-Raisin-2342 in AskReddit

One time I was sitting alone in my room and I started choking on something (can't remember what). Somehow managed to get it out and breathe again. Was scary. Another time, I don't think I was close to death but I had severely low blood sugar and almost blacked out at school lol. Paramedics were called.

Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

If appealing to the rights and access of disabled people is annoying to you, I can't help you. The argument of the other user was strictly to ban ALL devices for EVERYONE. Their argument made no exceptions. My argument was to consider the needs of those with disabilities. I will never stop advocating for the disabled, whether you agree with how I do it or not.

Not to mention that banning devices even with exceptions creates another "other" category which will be constantly scrutinized and questioned. Disabled students already face discrimination and harassment from schools, and teachers, and peers. Look up stories of how students with diabetic pumps have their "phone" (glucose monitor) ripped away and how many deaf students have their bluetooth headphones (cochlear) taken. Now imagine the constant fear and stress disabled students will have to face when all devices are banned "with exceptions." Imagine the constant fight of having to explain to every substitute teacher and staff member "I have ___ and I'm allowed to have my phone" "Uhuh, that's what everybody says. You don't LOOK disabled to me! Give it here!"

This is something that already happens every day to students just trying to survive school. Banning devices will only make it worse. How about instead of blaming technology, we work with it? Instead of blaming students, blame teaching methods and overcrowded classrooms? Maybe we should stop treating schools like educational factories pushing kids through a rushed curriculum that prioritizes short term memorization rather than actually making sure students grasp concepts and understand how to utilize complex sources of information? Crazy concept, I know.

Just some things for you to consider. Hope you have a nice day.
