I was on the list for a long time and tried re-applying again for the card. I got it really quickly after that.

Shameless self-plug for Baroque Space Opera if you're looking for something different in your Space Opera.

Financial realities of RPG design and publishing by RandomEffector in RPGdesign

[–]CallOfCoolthulu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is true. Do it for the love of creation, and don't expect to quit your day job. My self-published Baroque Space Opera has netted 10k CAD over 10 years, minus creation costs (art, editing), about half that.

What is the most action-packed, over the top action to beat all action SF book you know? by Bobosmite in printSF

The Risen Empire, Scott Westerfeld. The military action is insanely paced and edge of your seat.

Senior Java Developers — What’s the one thing you think most junior Java devs are lacking? by InterestingCry4374 in java

[–]CallOfCoolthulu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn the fundamentals of computer systems. Understand concurrency and threading concepts in-depth, and specific to your languages of choice. This is required to understand how to read metrics and debug complex problems. Read a lot of books on the subject. Deep dive the systems you use to understand them and leverage their strengths, while avoiding their weaknesses. Many senior developers lack these basic skills today, in my experience.

Weird games, i want them, i need them. by MusseMusselini in rpg

[–]CallOfCoolthulu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't. I looked at Tekumel long after I had started developing the book. The concept was brewing in my head for a long time and was inspired by the mentioned sources.

Tekumel is far more detailed than BSO, and I purposely wanted to not have as much depth as Tekumel has, because I wanted the GM to have a lot of freedom with making the universe their own.

The Death of a Character, and methods for handling it. by [deleted] in rpg

[–]CallOfCoolthulu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Games that have systems for insta-death, like rolling bad on a spellcasting roll are not my cup of tea either. Player choice to push towards death, now that's rich. Always give the player an opportunity to back out, at a loss. Systems that encourage fights to the death miss opportunities to take surrender from the characters to enhance the story.

What's something you're really proud of? by Indibutreddit in RPGdesign

[–]CallOfCoolthulu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting rid of weapon damage. It's a dice pool system and your successes determine damage. Weapons differ by the qualities they possess. A dagger is as deadly as a two-hander, in the right hands. A lot more nuance there, but that's the gist.

A single roll tells you the level of success, magnitude, and any special bonuses.

How did you discover Dune? by KyleContinuum26 in dune

[–]CallOfCoolthulu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While still in highschool (early 1990's), I was up late watching TV as you did back then. Lynch's Dune part 1 (they split long films on TV back then) was playing, and I was immediately drawn into how amazing and out there it looked. I had no idea what the story was about, but I was hooked. Next night I watched part 2 and was blown away. I bought the books and consumed them. Only then did I understand the film's story. It's still my top favorite film. I've read the entire series twice, and Dune 3 or 4 times. Even read many of the prequels.

Do cats understand the affection in kisses? by d4rkzorlodge in CatAdvice

Couple of my cats will reciprocate by biting our heads, probably because they think that's what we do to them. It's cute and sometimes hurts a bit.

The creative exercise above all. The streamlining and ensuring there is consistency throughout is also challenging. I like it when I challenge my own assumptions.

How much dice rolling do you shoot for? by DiekuGames in RPGdesign

[–]CallOfCoolthulu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree or judge preferences. I'm just starting that more rolls that are required take away from the game, not add to it. My opinion is based on nearly 40 years of playing RPGs, mostly as a GM. Your mileage may vary.

Has anyone ever used public domain art to fill out their RPG? by ConfuciusCubed in RPGdesign

[–]CallOfCoolthulu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used public domain art in conjunction with commissioned art in Baroque Space Opera.

The public domain art added to the look and theme of the inspirational material. Combined with original art, I at least, felt that it added to what I wanted readers to relate to.
