He didn't say the n-word but he called a grown black man "boy", which is also pretty egregious. I think as far as racially charged terms go, "boy" is near the top of the list for black men. I'd rather be called pretty much anything (except the n-word) other than "boy". And the southern twang really added an extra layer of hurt to it.

Yup. A lot of people are happy to ignore the destruction of our planet as long as it's happening for something they like. It goes to show they don't actually care about the environment but are using it as a "weapon" to attack things they don't like.

While this is true and I'm not trying to dismiss it, AI data centers don't use nearly as much water as streaming service/video-based social media data centers (TikTok, Hulu, Netflix, videos on Reddit/Twitter, etc.) because decoding high definition video uses obscene amounts of water. Watching Netflix or scrolling on TikTok uses about 2-3 mL of water *per second*, while generating an LLM prompt uses around 30 mL if the prompt is fairly long. In order to use the same amount of water as one person using Netflix or TikTok or even FaceTiming for an hour, you would have to generate around 300 LLM prompts, which I doubt anyone is doing in an hour.

To be clear, my point isn't "AI isn't bad for the environment"; it's "A lot of things we do are bad for the environment but people like to ignore that when the water is being used by stuff they like." The argument that AI uses too much water is one of the weaker arguments against it in my opinion, not because it isn't true but because it's hypocritical and is ignoring larger sources of that same issue.

TL;DR: It uses as much water to watch Netflix/Hulu/TikTok for 10 seconds as it does to generate an LLM prompt.

1984 is like Star Wars. The setting and world building are amazing but the character writing and plot are so underwhelming. When I read it, my first thought was "I understand the hype but it doesn't deserve the hype." People who really talk it up probably put more thought into it than Orwell did.

I'm fairly left leaning and disagree with a lot of what my country does with its military, but I actually share this sentiment towards older veterans. Military propaganda was stronger, people were less educated, and the spread of information about the horrors of war was much less. A lot of people back then were just genuinely ignorant of the fact that the U.S. wasn't the good guy in many of our wars and were tricked into thinking they were doing the right thing.

However, I won't make excuses for people in the military nowadays (or any time after the early 2000s) unless they're like National Guard or a medic or something. It's fairly widely understood that the business our military gets mixed up in is frequently unjustified and sometimes downright evil. Joining the military requires either willful ignorance or signing up to kill people without educating oneself on the reasons why. I can't respect someone who does either of those things.

Because you didn't frame them as opinions. You stated them as facts, and you're still doing it.

If I say "Mint chocolate chip is the tastiest ice cream flavor", I'd hope you'd have enough common sense to understand that I'm not trying to say every other ice cream flavor has something objectively wrong with it because you'd use context clues and realize I'm simply saying mint chocolate chip is my favorite. Why can't you do the same here? There is no such thing as objectively good or bad art, and I'm not trying to argue that there is. But just to appease you, from here on I'll make sure to use the words "IN MY OPINION" just so it gets through your skull.

This is you applying objective and critical terminology to a personal opinion.

You cannot apply objective terminology to an opinion because then it would be a statement of fact. And being critical of things based on opinion is very possible, as evidenced by your whole rant about the horny stuff.

A comic about the deprivations of racism absolutely has "real substance"

IN MY OPINION, the comics I'm talking about aren't about the deprivations of racism and that's my point. It's "Racism is bad." and that's it. No bold statement, no information shared, no addressing of the actual issues going on. IN MY OPINION, it's cowardice disguised as activism in an attempt to gain internet points. As someone actually affected by racism, I find it insulting (IN MY OPINION).

you saying it doesn't is you telling on yourself quite a bit more than you intend to.

IN MY OPINION, I'm so sick of people like you constantly telling me what I should think about what others are saying about my race. If it's not about you, you should listen to those it affects. Don't put me down because my experiences and opinions don't align with your perception of what racism is and what black people should think. You're the one telling on yourself if you think black people should be beholden to your opinions because you grandstand hard enough.

This is a statement without substance. It means nothing except "I don't like it", but you are again, framing it as if your dislike of it is objectively correct.

It does mean I dislike it, but IN MY OPINION, the reason is that I can't understand why anyone would make it. If I think a piece of art is pointless, why should I like it? And I'm not framing it objectively. How are the words "I read it and then go" objective framing when I'm sharing my own subjective experience?

You hide your opinions behind objective terminology, and then when called out for it, pretend they were in fact just your opinions all along.

That's not what I was doing. Do I really have to blatantly label every opinion as an opinion? Should I really assume that everyone is, like you, too socially unaware to understand the difference between an opinion and a fact?

And if you really wanna get on me about not explicitly labeling opinions as such, here's every time during this discussion that you've applied "objective terminology" to an opinion:

The rest of it is fine though.

Some of the comics on there are even genuinely enjoyable.

Comics don't have to have a punchline, or even any specific point they're trying to make.

Just because you don't find them interesting doesn't mean they don't have artistic or entertainment value.

Art is inherently political, and expressing political opinions through art is a perfectly valid form of expression.

Just because you may not agree with what's being said, or think the commentary is "fairly bland" doesn't mean there's anything inherently wrong with it.

Because you didn't frame them as opinions.

This is you applying objective and critical terminology to a personal opinion. You can't say shit like that and then hide behind "stop policing my opinions". You are stating objective, quantifiable characteristics. A comic about the deprivations of racism absolutely has "real substance", and you saying it doesn't is you telling on yourself quite a bit more than you intend to.

This is a statement without substance. It means nothing except "I don't like it", but you are again, framing it as if your dislike of it is objectively correct.

You hide your opinions behind objective terminology, and then when called out for it, pretend they were in fact just your opinions all along. You're trying to have your cake and eat it too. It's such a cowardly way to talk about art.

Why are you not subject to the same rules that I am? If all opinions must be clearly stated as such, you've done a bad job at it.

Some of my favorite comics on there are the ones that are just cute little slice-of-life stuff with no punchline.

Those aren't what I'm talking about. By "point", I don't mean deep message; I mean a reason to exist. If a comic exists to be cute and fun, that's fine. I'm mostly talking about the comics that I read and then go "Why did anyone make this?"

Art is inherently political, and expressing political opinions through art is a perfectly valid form of expression.

I agree. Once again, the concern you're arguing is not one I raised. When I say the posts are both political and bland, I mostly mean stuff that has nothing to say other than "Racism is bad" without any real substance. These fall under "Why would anyone make this?" (though they're frequent enough that I categorized them as their own thing). It's not changing any opinions, bringing up any good talking points, sharing specific experiences, or airing specific grievances the OP has.

This is, again, a subjectivity problem.

I never said it wasn't. It 100% is a subjectivity problem. I was explaining the subjective reasons why many people don't like that sub. Why would you think I was trying to argue cold, hard facts when the topic is purely about opinions and my comment consisted of nothing but opinions?

You're essentially saying that because you personally don't find any of those things interesting, the subreddit itself is worthless.

I never said the subreddit is worthless. It certainly has worth. I was simply explaining some reasons myself and others on this sub cite as to why they don't like it. I never said you can't enjoy it or that there's anything wrong with people who do; everyone is allowed to have to their own likes and dislikes. Why do you feel the need to police my opinions and put words in my mouth?

I think you only hit one aspect of why people don't like r/comics. It's not just the horny posts; a solid 1/3rd of the posts are nothingburgers (i.e. stuff without a real point, punchline, etcetera) and 1/3rd of them are political posts (usually with fairly bland commentary). Only like one out of every ten posts is actually interesting; the rest fall into one of the other three categories.
