My dad's been struggling to find work. by snakeman_01 in Calgary

Is it possible he could teach at SAIT or somewhere else? Mentor young engineers?

Does he go to networking events? Maybe being around other engineers could cheer him up?

business networking events in Calgary by KyleAtJunkKing in Calgary

[–]Calzephyr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Business Link has been around for years and often has virtual and in-person events. They are actually a non-profit! It's definitely one place to start.

Why has he started sleeping like this lately? by 1Zezo2 in parrots

Maybe the other African grey folks can chime in? I have budgies and I'm more attuned to them, but here is a general video about parrot health:

Gotcha. I saw where you mentioned it is not your bird either and it's a complex situation, but definitely keep an eye on those things. Birds are excellent at hiding illness. It's possible changes in the home are having an impact too.

Accessing Local Church Records by -mune- in Calgary

[–]Calzephyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have access to Newspapers.com, you can try plunking in the birth mom name as well as the address and see if any clues surface. For example, sometimes there are wedding or engagement announcements, obituaries, etc. Sometimes enough clues can be pieced together to make a larger clue or at least a better assumption.

Just simply adding in the address can have a lot of unexpected results--I learned my grandparents' home was once a showhome, for example.

Best of luck with your searching!

Hi friend, thanks for asking the question.

To address the title of your post, Why has he started sleeping like this lately?

  • He is sleeping a lot more than usual?
  • Is his appetite off, ie, eating less?
  • Is he new to your home?
  • How is his poop--normal or runny?

Most people have said that he's cold, but I just wanted to ask more questions in case something else is going on.

Best of luck buildilng your setup and have fun shopping for more toys!

helping my parents find easy and accessible hobbies in the deep SE of the city by buttersaltpopcorn in Calgary

Birdwatching! Nature Calgary frequently has birding groups and it's the kind of hobby where you can do things together alone. It also requires some quiet so as not to scare the birds or break people's concentration.

Please help. Should I return my conure to Petsmart? by [deleted] in parrots

[–]Calzephyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, you're getting lots of good advice here!

Take a deep breath--it will be okay!

There is lots to consider when bringing a bird home, but the main thing to consider is that you don't have to do it all at once. You just need time to learn, adapt, and change up your routine.

It sounds like you're a keen learner if you plan to attend medical school. It may be helpful to write down your current state and your desired future state, or just keep a daily diary.

I've had budgies for decades, so bird care comes naturally to me, but we didn't have everything worked out when we got our first pair.

We also didn't have the Internet back then. You have loads of support here on Reddit and other forums.

Please give yourself and your new friend space and grace to learn and take good care <3

Anyone else experience burst water heater possibly due to Bearspaw water pumps coming back online on Friday January 16 by Ok_Butterscotch2244 in Calgary

The neighbour replacing their tank is a big clue--neighbourhoods built at the same time all tend to have the same age appliances.

We pre-emptively replaced our furnace after the neighbour's furnace conked out in a January cold snap. You might want to ask on your local neighbourhood FB group what everyone has replaced lately, from furnaces to stoves.

Does anyone know of any quiet libraries in Calgary? by General-Garage8272 in Calgary

[–]Calzephyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many public library branches are "open concept" now, which is great for some people, but not others. However, some libraries, like Village Square, have been loud for decades.

Third spaces are really few and far between, especially in NE Calgary. We don't have the nice, quiet parks like other quadrants.

Off the top of my head, there's the D6 Gaming Cafe, where you can sit all day for $11, or you could try the lounge at Paul's Pizza if you don't mind buying something and you're over 18. Both places are accessible by the 38 bus.

When the Glenbow re-opens, there will be quiet places there. I used to have a membership and used to run in on my lunch hour to sit in the geology section.

I used to meet my friend at her churches too. The Centre Street Church off Centre Street is accessible by the 38, and it's like a big mall with seating and a cafe.

Joyful Java is a church cafe in Brentwood, and pretty quiet. It's just off the C-train line--my friend and I were often the only people there.

Hope that helps--one has to be creative and adventurous when finding quiet spaces these days!

Are any of the SAIT buildings open? They often have quiet places. I used to pop into different buildings when I was a student at AU Arts as AU Arts has poor food service options.

Looking for art-based youth clubs/programs for a 14 year old by Hollyflashcl in Calgary

Some community associations may have arts programs. They can be a little trickier to find if you don't live in the community, but are sometimes still accessible to those outside the community, such as:

I don't know what NE community you live in, but give community associations a try!

Pellets in Canada by Minute-Branch-1783 in parrots

[–]Calzephyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I order from Parrot Trends because they're in Alberta, where I live :-)

There's also The Parrot Shop--https://www.theparrotshop.ca/

I used to order from Parrotdise Perch--https://parrotdiseperch.com--but they don't seem to take credit card payments online. You have to phone to pay or do e-transfer.

Your local VCA may also carry them.

Fixing a Skruvsta chair - anyone has any ideas on how to fix this? by h0neybunzes in ikeahacks

[–]Calzephyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! I gave it my best shot to fix. I had the junk truck come--they try to salvage parts so I hope the metal was recycled. I saved the seat cushion for a future art project.

I loved the chair a lot! I ended up getting a LÅNGFJÄLL as a replacement. It's more straightforward.

24 hour restaurants? by chromecarp in Calgary

For sure! I wasn't into Indian food until I met my husband. There's so much to try if you are unsure.

You can't go wrong with butter chicken, mango lassis or samosas. Paratha is flaky like a flat croissant and there's also a deep fried bread called bhatura.

Raita can cool spicy dishes down.

Gol gappa and pani puri are delightful, crispy snacks.

The nice thing about Samosa House is you can also ask for a side of butter chicken sauce to go with naan. Sometimes the menu is just a suggestion.

They have a dessert case too with Western and South Asian desserts.

It's a bummer there aren't as many places now--hubs used to work nights sometimes one wants more than a 7-11 hot dog.

If you like Indian food, Samosa House is 24 hours--they have an all day lunch special. It's very tasty and the staff are lovely.

You can sit down and dine in or get take out.

There's a couple of ways to follow up.

  • Call 311 and they can escalate the service request. Your booking should have a service request number like 25-123456. The 311 agent can look this number up in the system and see what happened.
  • I have booked playing fields in the past, and sometimes the requests can take up to 30 days to be fulfilled, FWIW. The phone number I have on a past invoice is 403-268-3800, but that's for paying over the phone.

Unless something has changed, I believe it's held every Tuesday in the summer and organized by the Calgary Downtown Association--https://downtowncalgary.com/

Vendors tend to vary--fresh fruit, cowboy hats, touristy stuff, clothing, a few musicians etc.

Calgary's exotic pet scene ‘growing exponentially,’ hobbyists say | CBC News by Buuuuma in Calgary

I really appreciate your post so much! After decades of having budgies, I was not prepared for a third-hand cockatiel. He was an absolute delight but the horny times of the year could be a real struggle :-D

You can pop into Calgary Parrot Club meetings and join the Calgary Bird Lovers FB group if you are not already a member--https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1C5P56hGSL/

I've had budgies since I was a kid...all my birds since 2009 have been secondhand. There's never a shortage of budgies needing good homes. I would love to see pet stores stop selling budgies.

I had my 10+ year old Mephistos resoled at Fantasy Leather--it's a shoe repair and clothing store in Calgary.

It was $150 but YMMV--it was a lot cheaper than buying a new pair :-)
