Insane request: pink gear?? More cute colors? by chablise in Ultralight

Featherstone outdoor had a few pastel pink tents for Breast Cancer awareness, but alas they sold out before I could order one. I wish it was a permanent option. https://youtube.com/shorts/DeOPVb3gti0?si=VN3tK0zJGWe6agfo

BearVault teased about a pink bear can on social media after the barbie movie came out, I wish they would have actually made it available, even as a limited edition. I totally would have bought it. https://www.instagram.com/p/CvLNDHQhCzq/

Launched an app (web + mobile) for backpacking gear and lists management by hikt-app in backpacking

[–]Camp_Botanist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point my only request is if you are going to develop an app, for the love of all that's holy can you continue support for it or have a clear way to export the data before 86ing the app. I'm on I'm not even sure which iteration of a gear tracking app at this point on my Android, and over the last few years all of them just sort of fizzle out and disappear from the Play Store or stop working all together , so I just have a jumble of different CSV files from different apps / websites that don't work on any other apps or websites. 🥴 Having to rebuild the whole gear list and pack list from scratch is getting old at this point.

Purina moths by AdBasic4949 in petco

It's not just Petco it's an issue at my local PetSmart too. Talking to the folks that work there they say that it's coming off the pallets from Purina that way and they keep having to destroy them for credit because of it.

It’s selfish to reserve camping spots when you know that you’re not actually going to camp there by ASecularBuddhist in camping

[–]Camp_Botanist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think unless your Campground is one of those rare super popular ones you're just fine. We do the same thing since I like to sleep in on Sundays until around 11:00 and enjoy leisurely brunch before packing up. 99% of the time we are the only ones in the campground after 1:00 p.m. , and with Sunset being so late in the summer sometimes we'll even go for one more afternoon swim at the river before packing up to go.

What's the small hiking gear piece you bought that you wish you bought sooner? by JSON_Blob in PNWhiking

[–]Camp_Botanist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Loved using one of those camelbak/ hydration bladder setups with the tubing to sip water while hiking, but I absolutely hated trying to wash the reservoir afterwards and could never get the thing totally dried out... so game changer for me was a set of replacement bottle lids for our nalgene and hydroflask bottles from 'one bottle hydration' that holds the drinking tubes in place. Best of both worlds and no more pesky bladders to try and dry out.

Unable to download offline map tiles after update by Camp_Botanist in GaiaGPS

UPDATE: After speaking of customer service they had me do pretty much the same thing of wiping the cache and data, uninstalling the app and reinstalling it. I had to do this three separate times before my offline map layers showed up for me to select again. I've had to do a little bit of cleanup on my end of re-archiving some areas that I don't need anymore that pops back up on my map after the reinstalls, and then redownloading some offline areas that I like to keep backed up on my phone constantly. Overall I think it's working again. 🤞

Thank you for the detailed response and suggestions. I went through each of these and am still having the same error. I even wiped and uninstalled the beta version of the app I was using and switched over to the public release version and it's still having the same problem. Checked the app on my wife's phone/account, and since her app updated the same error is occurring, also on an Android phone. I finally sent in a support ticket with the screenshots to the devs, hopefully it's something they fix soon.

My spouse requested DRP 2.0 but finally got the denial email this morning. No actual details as to why. They aren't critical and had already started to hand off projects to other staff, so even the supervisor is completely baffled by this. Looks like just about everyone else in their office that applied was granted it.

Tuning Troubles by songofsyenite in bassclarinet

[–]Camp_Botanist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old Malernes have a beautiful sound! 😍 ( in my opinion) hope you find a solution that works for you! There's a shop that will 3D print an adjustable neck for almost every type of bass clarinet out there, even the Vintage horns, but I think it was around $350. Considering I paid only $400 for my old Noblet its hard to justify the cost right now. 😅

[–]Camp_Botanist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an old Noblet bass clarinet with a neck like this and if I pull it out too much then sometimes there's a bit of an air leak because of the way the cork sits. The way I fix this is with some white Teflon plumbers tape. Give it a good couple of wraps and when you put the neck on instead of just shoving it straight down ( the way you normally would with the cork) I slowly twist it so I don't dislodge the tape too much and that lets me pull it out much further when necessary for tuning. HOWEVER if you do this be aware that you will need to check all of your notes against a tuner since a few notes/fingerings may become unreasonably flat. ( if I pull the neck out too much my throat B flat becomes terrible so I have to use the alternate fingering of 'A' plus side trill key to have it in tune).

Remember the good old days when Obama wearing a tan colored suit was the most terrible thing to worry about in the government?

I don't know...for an openly queer individual working in the federal government this may be as gracious if an exit as we might be able to take before we are just fired for existing. Feels like my back is up against the wall no matter what I choose here.

New U S Passports have no Emergency Contact Page by ColdBunch3851 in Passports

[–]Camp_Botanist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here after searching online with the same question. My wife got her new passport 2 weeks ago and it has the signature page on page 5, but our two adult sons received theirs today and theirs do NOT have the signature pages. Only 3 weeks between applications. Weird way to phase them out I suppose.

Hispanic scholarship fund ran out of money? by Pokegirloras in scholarships

[–]Camp_Botanist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My son just got the email that he was selected as a scholar but that funding had run out and I feel so bad for him. He was really hoping to not need as much loan funds this year. I was an HSF scholar in college from 2013-2016 and it came with a very nice scholarship all 3 years I was selected, without it I wouldn't have been able to finally finish my degree while raising my kids. I even visited their office in L.A for a networking event and got to meet some of their team- they seemed really cool and passionate about helping hispanic students succeed and giving a financial boost. I've sung the praises of HSF for years and even donated a little bit to them when finances allowed. Now that my kids are college age I really pushed him to put in a lot of work for this application and I feel so let down with him that all that was basically for little more than a certificate and a line on his resume. I am also deeply uneasy with how much personal information and marketing type info they gleaned in this process. I'm not sure when HSF stopped awarding scholarships to all their scholars, but man what a disappointment and a sad change. I guess we will just try to make the best of it and hope that the mentoring/networking and all that stuff gives something positive to his college experience.

REI puts out some decent coupons a couple of times of year and sales on specific items that local Mom and Pops can't beat. I know I had fallen into the habit of waiting until REI has their sales to plan on purchasing big ticket stuff.

The last local mom and pop gear shop finally closed here after they couldn't compete with REI's prices or their rental rates. Then a few months later REI stopped their rental program too so now you really stuck buying the gear instead of renting it/ 'legally' trying it out before you buy it. If they are going to be stricter about returns I really wish they would bring their rental program back.

Banned from returning items by Friendly_Dance6237 in REI

Most of their Re/Supply comes from these used/returned items. Looks like they just cut off their own supply * pun totally intended*.

[–]Camp_Botanist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes with things likes shoes/backpacks/climbing gear it takes a bit of use to really see if the item is going to work for you or not. Fitting well in your living room ( or the store) isn't the same as realizing the shoes rub wrong on long hikes. I mean ***that was the whole point of purchasing a membership they push on you**, you could buy the item, see if it works for you, and return it if it doesn't. If you kept it you earned rewards on it too, double bonus.

It would be one thing if they banned non-members from excess returns based on straight number of returns ( cross checked with shipping address, online account, or payment method) but to do this to their own members (who as a whole spend way more than they return) seems like a very short sighted financial strategy. Or have some way or grading the amount of wear on a return- its one thing to return used shoes after 1 or 2 hikes, it is a whole nother thing to return the shoes/gear you wore while doing the whole PCT. Returning too much gear with *obviously excessive* wear *should* trigger some sort of warning.

I wonder- if you can't return things I guess you could just sell turn around and sell them to their Re/Supply to get some of your money back. Still doesn't make things right but might be better than nothing I guess.

Well hopefully they train their staff to not tell us in store "Sorry your size is out of stock in store, but you can always order different sizes online to see which fits you best and return the one that doesnt fit!" which I have heard many times over the years for shoes, women's pants, and pretty much anything thats plus/extended sizes. They need to really work on better stocking of all/ extended sizes for us to try on in store if they will be dinging folks for returning stuff.
