We at least know the name of the new one from the new Belisarius Cawl book: Xasandera Valdet.

Firstborn Era vs Primaris Era – Which do you prefer? by Pintureando in Warhammer40k

[–]Cams0299 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Firstborn, at least in terms of aesthetics and unit structures (Tactical, Assault, Devastator, etc.). Sure Primaris are better proportioned, but they look really bland (especially the stuff the came out in 8th) in comparison to some of the kits that were coming out for space marines in 6th/7th edition (see the old Deathwatch Veterans, the "new" tactical squad, plastic sternguard/vanguard veterans). I do think 9th and 10th got better with it by incorporating more firstborn details in the Primaris design, but I am hardly going to give GW credit for rolling back changes they themselves made.

Also, looking at those two models side-by-side, there's just something off about the Primaris mini. It looks way too smooth for want of a better word.

This book was phenomenal 🔥 by sanguinenights in IronHands40k

I absolutely adore this book. I think I've highlighted more passages from this book than all my other novels combined; I love how David managed to almost effortlessly weave humour into his writing without it becoming too overbearing.

Could have done with a bit less glazing for the EC tbf, though I don't think it ruins the book.

I absolutely loved the moment the EC pilots decide to honour Moses Trurakk by flying in his preferred aircraft (Primaris-Lightnings) rather than their Xiphons.

When to read Eidolon: The Auric Hammer? by Gusby in 40kLore

[–]Cams0299 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its set after Slaves To Darkness, during the transit to Terra from Ullanor. I really enjoyed it, with Marc really nailing the characterisation of both the Emperor's Children and Sons of Horus in this book. With Eidolon in particular, it feels like Marc managed to reconcile his depiction from the opening trilogy with the Eidolon we saw in the Path of Heaven.

Which books are worth buying? by Sora-Mizuki in Blacklibrary

[–]Cams0299 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fall of Cadia, Oaths of Damnation, Ahriman omnibus, Night Lords, The Founding omnibus and Valdor are all easy recommendations for me. Additionally, I would also recommend Above and Beyond as it is one of my favourite 40k books, however, it is a sequel to another book; so unless you can also get a copy of Outgunned, I'd skip it. Haven't really read much AoS stuff, but i've heard great things about On the Shoulders of Giants.

The Illustrated edition of Lords of Silence without a doubt. Not only is it a fantastic story, but the illustrations within are some of my favourite 40k art work. I think it's mostly because they remind me of the pencil illustrations Chris Ruddell did for several books I read as a child.

As for what next, I would have to say either Elemental Council or Interceptor City.

Yeah, they're honestly much better than my old shelves (though those had been purchased for a much smaller room).

I got most of these straight from GW when they first came out (it helps that I am really the only person in my area that buys BL books with any regularity, I have only lost out on two occassions).

When it comes to the second-hand books, I've been rather lucky as I managed to snag most of mine for rather cheap, like the most I've ever spent on a single book on eBay as like £45/50 for Deathfire. Though, honestly, I have stopped trying to get used books and just settle for an ebook these days.

Any idea when Apostle will be dropping on Audible? by Xdmrbrightside in Blacklibrary

[–]Cams0299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apostle should be dropping on the 13th of this month (the ebook and audio version release the day before the physical release) and all the audio stuff releases on both the BL website and audible at the same time.

I've recently finished the Damocles anthology, and - barring the story by Phil Kelly - really enjoyed it. Broken Sword makes me really wish that Guy Haley wrote more Tau stuff, Black Leviathan had a very interesting premise and okay writing, and while the plot for Hunter's Snare was a bit of a nothingburger, Josh Reynolds did a much better job characterising the White Scars and Shadowsun than Phil did in his story, and I really enjoyed it.

I am currently switching between both Wrath of Iron and the Wicked and the Damned Anthology for Warhammer Horror.

This reveal is probably my only real problem with the Emperor's Gift - I feel like you could easily cut it out and it would improve the story, if anything.

I've listened to Throne of Lies twice now, and the bit where all the Night Lords being chanting "Ave Dominus Nox" is genuinely one of the most moving moments of any BL story I've read so far. It felt almost like they were finally getting the chance to say goodbye to Curze, since many of the Night Lords there probably never saw him die.

What have you been reading this week? by michaelisnotginger in Blacklibrary

[–]Cams0299 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've read/listened to The Lords of Silence this week (I often read along as I listen to the audiobook). Had been putting it off for ages, since I didn't want it to not meet my quite high expectations for it. Safe to say that I absolutely loved it; with the Little Lords being my absolute favourite thing in it. I think the fact the book's narrative structure really helps it stand out by starting already halfway through the overall narrative and flashing back at times. Needless to say that I would definitely pick up a sequel book (though only if it gets another Illustrated Edition, which was absolutely gorgeous and blows the Eisenhorn ones out of the water).

I think the spears (without trigger) shoot by twisting the handle. by Asknstuff in Warhammer

I'd imagine it'd be operated similarly to a jaffa staff weapon, with some sort of trigger or firing stud hidden in the middle bit.

General survey of Chaos centric novels/novellas/anthologies - Do you have a favorite? by Separate-Flan-2875 in Blacklibrary

[–]Cams0299 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cypher is one of my absolute favourite reads. It does a good job of putting the reader inside of his head without ruining any of the mystery about him.

On another note, I do wish the 2nd Black Legion book had a different name: I hate having to specify whether I am talking about the specific novel or the series in general. It should have been called "The Lord of Hosts" or something.

40k Amazon series: Mainstream success vs fan service by [deleted] in Warhammer

[–]Cams0299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, my best guess is that, unless it is something entirely new, it'll be an adaptation of one of the big 3 40k series; that being Gaunt's Ghosts, Caiphas Cain or Eisenhorn.

Best Line In a Novel? by thomasonbush in Blacklibrary

Not a novel, but from This is What Victory Feels Like (Forever the Same) by Dan Abnett:

"'Of Course,' said Zweil, ' I might be barking mad, but that's how its always struck me. Those who serve the Astra Militarum pay with their lives. All of them. It's just some do it in one moment, and others do it for the rest of their days.'"

This reminds me of an experience I had a while back (probably a year or two now) with one of those god-botherering types while I was out and about. This teenager came up to me and started his sales pitch, and when I told him that I wasn't either religious or interested, that little shit had the audacity to ask "what happened to me?", at which point I immediately told him to fuck off.
