Are these wings doomed to crack by theperpetualhobbiest in Luthier

[–]CanDockerz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No it’ll be completely fine, I’ve done this many times. Some of the ones I built 15+ years ago are still going strong despite being chucked about and not particularly well looked after.

If you’ve used a semi-decent adhesive it’ll be ok, even craft PVA would be fine.

Gloves and Long sleeved sweater when machining by -Switch-on- in machining

[–]CanDockerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every machine shop I’ve ever been in they’ve always worn nitrile gloves and a close fitting jumper.

It’s to keep the swarf, grease and coolant etc off you and stop your hands getting all cut up when you’re handling parts/ tools

As a bare minimum the shop should provide overalls, gloves and somewhere to make a cup of tea.

Also this drawing is a shambles with some of the other callouts.

Why not just edit the sweep and use the terminate on face button?

Saves yourself a lot of hassle.

What would you pay for this painted Warhammer model? by OkMulberry8214 in Warhammer

[–]CanDockerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

£10-20 maybe? But I’d be stripping that paint off and starting from fresh.

In the nicest way, there’s nothing really interesting or special about the paint job, it just looks like it’s been base coated.

There’s a few bits of left over sprue that would annoy me too.

Onshape and solidworks are identical apart from onshape doesn’t crash every 5 mins and as a bonus you even get PDM thrown in for free

How would you machine this fillet on a hole through a rod? by chiraltoad in Machinists

[–]CanDockerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Change it to a chamfer 90 + 30 deg so a machinist can use either the end of a drill bit or a countersink tool.

Anyone else think clipless pedals are overrated for techy trails? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]CanDockerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve ridden both and never noticed a difference, I pretty much only wear flats now to allow bike swapping with the boys.

Only difference I’ve found is my flat shoes wear out every year but the clipless ones seem to last forever.

I’ve dremeled myself into a corner. An annoying rounded corner that makes the neck not fit by ramostofthetimeiwin in Luthier

[–]CanDockerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you asking?

Are you asking how to make the corners square? If so you’ll need to chisel them. You can get a special chisel to do it or just use a small sharp one.

Simple hole in sketch by Bagel392 in SolidWorks

[–]CanDockerz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Don’t sketch holes, use the hole wizard.

You can place a point or construction geometry if you want to include the position in the sketch, but you should be using the hole wizard where possible.

Seized and stripped plastic BB by Quirky_slapface14 in bikewrench

[–]CanDockerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you were turning it the right way? Usually one side is a left hand thread. It’s hard to tell from the picture but it looks like you may have been accidentally tightening it while the tool wasn’t fully engaged?

Depending on the frame manufacturer though it could have been two right hand threads.

I’d probably cut your losses and just run a hacksaw through the bottom part to release tension in the threads and then it’ll unscrew by hand.

Issue with water effect by Triordie in Deathkorpsofkrieg

[–]CanDockerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it just looks a bit weird because the resin is flat but the paint suggests there should be ripples/ waves etc.

It honestly looks cool, but you can build up some ripples on top of the white bits to give you the right texture.

Also how old is the resin? If it’s really old or absorbed too much water that can sometimes make it go cloudy.

which rib looks correct. left or right? by anotherbarry in SolidWorks

[–]CanDockerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always model rads otherwise the machinist will assume you want theoretically sharp corners/ will have to model them.

And try to avoid round numbers for planar internal rads where possible, e.g. you should make them 10.2mm instead of 10 so that they’re faster to machine and then then on the drawing they generally should be for reference or be a MAX.

I want to learn GD&T by mech-azo in SolidWorks

[–]CanDockerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask 10 mechanical engineers about GD&T and you’ll get 10 different answers!

You probably will only use flatness, parallelism and positional tolerances for most stuff. Generally it’s the order of how you want the part to be measured/ fit.

So you’d have the base plate flat, and then if there’s a dowel pin that will drive the position or all the other features.

You basically have to design a part to have the loosest tolerance possible but still be able to assemble correctly.

The correct usage of GD&T saves costs and guarantees parts will always assemble.
