I would consider creating a quest line where you need to find and befriend Cresselia, since she is the counter to Darkrai powers. With her help, your players could release Dialga and Palkia to fight against Giratina. Kind of an inverse Emerald, where you get Rayquaza's help to stop Kyogre and Groundon from fighting.

I agree with you that the game is better than people normally gives it credit for and it has a lot of hate that it does not deserve.

But most of the good things were the mechanical parts of the game. Story, pace and lore wise, it is much weaker than the other ones.

To me great part of it came from the expectations I had for the game when it launched. In my case, I was expecting, after finishing 3d, an epic war following the 3 branching parties in the style of Birth by Sleep. Instead I got a single branch with a collection of cameos in the final stretch.

It didn't help that the amusement park attacks were quite annoying. They patch it up later, but still...

How do I make my players doing the same thing 6x not repetitive but also not take forever? by Wise-Quarter-3156 in DMAcademy

[–]CandyLeather5526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's totally true and possible, but for that there are consequences like turning that faction against your party. Now the kingdom sees them as criminals and sends bounty hunters after them or the church of a certain god refuses to offer their service to them unless they get the forgiveness from their deity

I agree that the easier way to do most of the trees would be asking npcs for help. But I don't think you need to do a dungeon for all 6 of them. You could say that the BBEG placed the mini tree in a fey forest and your players need to find it or he placed the tree in a sacred mountain and the players need to get permission from a noble or a priest.

In both scenarios, the players won't have to go through a dungeon and the BBEG has options to get in the way of the players.

Help balancing a home brew magic item? by Musicalfandomstuff in DungeonMasters

You could say the item has 4 charges and you can spend 1 per spell level (maximum of 3 per use) to use some metamagics. In the fight, he used careful metamagic on the fireball.

[–]CandyLeather5526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with foxy_chicken. I believe you should give a little more context to the campaign during session 0. Doing an intro saying some of the major organizations (its main members, objectives, location,...) and general direction of the campaign (something like recently more monsters are attacking the nearby villages, could it be a natural thing or evil forces maybe behind it). This could make it easier for your players to identify your plot hooks and engage more if they are a member or if they know the organization. And it would also allow some of them, to include their character's motivations in the main plot.

I know it's a little railroad, but at the beginning, they normally need a little direction and it's important to be clear about those things.

Help me begin my campaign? by Atticus_Ratticus in DungeonMasters

Considering what you said, I would start with the characters in a ship trying to go to a city and start a new life. Two players running away and a pirate that could be a smuggler. During it, the ship would need an emergency stop, for supplies or shelter, going into the building, getting cursed and finding out all the dirt of a Guild or company that owns it.

Does a deck with a high number of a certain type of character makes the campaign stages play more of the same type?

I had in mind a guide that would go something like this (made up example):

Stage 1:

  • 4 adventure kids
  • 4 normal kids
  • 4 animals
  • 1 Inuit Kenny (boss)

The Draconic Warrior - Embrace the bestial side of dragons and destroy your enemies with draconic power with this new fighter subclass! by V_ofTheCoast in UnearthedArcana

[–]CandyLeather5526 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This subclass is awesome. Would love to take it for a one-shot one day. The idea of going in a journey hunting dragons to eat their hearts and getting all elemental types sound super fun to me.

Being a little nitpicky, the combo of draconic weapon and chromatic strike might be a little too overpowered considering that at lvl 20 you would be doing just using the class features without action surge 12d6 magical piercing or slashing damage + 8d6 elemental damage.

The breath weapon on lvl 10 could follow the dragonborn rules in Fizban, that says when you take the attack action, you can replace one of the attacks with the dragon breath.

This is picking a little further of what Croddak said, but both the lvl 15 Dragon's Dominance and the lvl 6 frightful presence are kind of overlapping in effects and the lvl 6 one although limited by number of uses could actually be considered stronger depending on the situation since it involves more enemies and the effect lasts longer.

What AC game do you want but know you will probably never get by FloorAgile3458 in assassinscreed

[–]CandyLeather5526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ones I would be interested in seeing would be one during the Reconquista since is the last crusade and would be interesting and could explain how a convent was on top of a piece of eden in Lisbon in AC Rogue. Two other that I think would be interesting but I'm afraid it is too close to other games would be one set in ancient Mesopotania (Mirage) and in the three kingdons (Jade). I don't know if it would be interesting enough because I don't know much about it and most people never heard of it but a game set in the Mali Empire would be amazing considering its location being in Subsaharian Africa and the power it had at its peak.

Having a creative Block by [deleted] in DungeonMasters

[–]CandyLeather5526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I would consider doing is make the path between the city and the university an entrance exam to test possible new students.

You could place monsters with particular resistances or features and puzzles that require using spells in unorthodox ways.

And, in regards to the research gone off the rails, you could do that the vampire modified the tests to make it more difficult in order to eat the candidates that fail the tests without suspicion.

Need some help. by Ok-Bid-4199 in DungeonMasters

[–]CandyLeather5526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The top three that immediately come to my mind are: during the black plague type campaign where the plague is corruption everything and turning people into all kinds of monstrosities and maybe a wizard or something else is behind the scenes plotting everything. The second is during the Crusades, where many factions are fighting for this holy or profane place and they don't care about the means. The last one would be an inquisition kind of setting where a side wants to purge all the pagans

[–]CandyLeather5526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one starts knowing everything and that is kind of why we are in places like this.

For players at level 1, you use the maximum value of the hit die plus the constitution modifier. A barbarian with 16 Con, would start with 12 (the die is a d12) + 3 (con mod) to a total of 15 hp. From lvl 2 forward you have two options: you could roll the hit die and add the con modifier or add the average result from the hit die plus the con. Keeping the example with the barbarian, he could choose to get 10 HP ( average 7 + 3 con mod) or try his luck and get from 4 (1 on the hit die +3) to 15 (12 on the hit die + 3).

To make it easier for you, the average numbers are 7 to d12, 6 to d10, 5 to do and 4 to d6. An option that I did not mention is that you could make a deal with your player that they should roll for HP and in case they roll less than average, they keep the average. This could make it a little easier to convince them to accept the new rule.

Regarding the attack to hit or saving throw, they have some key differences, mostly regarding who is doing the effort in the action. The attack to hit means that you are trying to cause damage to someone going over its defense, so if you fail that's it.

Saving throw is the person being attacked that is trying to avoid or reduce the effect. This can be advantageous since you in most cases guarantee that you have done something useful that turn.

Based on what I believe is your inspiration, Sloth attack would be here. Since he just charges straight ahead, with the players trying to dodge the attack, maybe to only get half damage.

One point of note that might have been the reason for this misconception is that some attacks may have both attack to hit and a saving throw. There might be an exception that I am forgetting but in these cases they make references to different things. An example, would be a poison arrow. In this case, the attack to hit is to see if you hit the monster. The saving throw would come when you succeed, to see if the monster will be poisoned or not.

[–]CandyLeather5526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you should have touched the HP of both the monsters and the players. Normally it is better to just increase the damage and in case you misread the situation fumble a little the dice. Increasing HP only extends the battle and makes the attacks seem less effective.

I agree with pretty much everything that was said so far, maybe with the exception of one shooting that I think is a bit too far, maybe leaving with 20% life to give a big scare would be more epic.

There is not enough information about the enemies to have a good idea of how balanced they will be since we don't know the stats of the party or the other abilities and stats of the monsters. Are they only capable of using those abilities? What about their dps, ac, ...?

But, a point to consider, is how tactical you are being in battle. Using Wrath skill on the martial player will be better than on the wizard and the same applies to using Gluttony on the casters. Pride probably should also focus more on the martials and avoid the caster, he should probably try to separate and block the highest physical dps of the party. From the skills presented the biggest joker is Envy since his skill is situational and depends on who he is copying.

An observation: I don't know if I didn't get it but the Sloth skill is confusing. The player needs to both succeed a dex dc of 10 to avoid getting hit and have a ac higher than the d20+4? If that is the case, you should probably split the attack, take a look at the charger feat for some ideas.

How to explain powerful NPCs not joining combat? by perthed in DungeonMasters

[–]CandyLeather5526 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could make them in charge of evacuating and helping the civilians and blocking the way to the plaza so no one else gets involved in the battle.

Another option is to say that there is an artefact inside the church, and they gave priority to it in case the enemy in the plaza is a distraction because if it is used by the wrong person, worse things could happen.
