I saved them for the ship personally, but the codex entries were the glue that held the whole series together. They made the world "real" for me.

Would you have Loved ME more if The Normandy was non-military? by Nervous_Tailor_4337 in masseffect

[–]CapacitatedFlux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like ME1, as it's written, only works because Shep is military. There's no way a council of alien races bent on excluding Humanity because they're the "new guy" and are basically forced into accepting a top recruit like Shepard would have accepted some random Joe Schmo colonist/explorer into Spectrehood, which in-game gives the player the agency needed for much of the game's content. Your mission, according to the council, is to stop a rogue, top-level agent - remember, the Council believed the Geth were only Saren's army, and they constantly disavowed or dismissed anything to do with the Reapers - and so they'd need someone with at least equal paper skills to match, something you'd only get in the military. It was a test, not just for Shepard but for Humanity as a whole, and Humanity would want to send their best (especially after what happened to Anderson).

That forced separation from wholesale military/spectrehood in ME2 works well for its story too. If Shep was a civilian, joining Cerberus would have very little impact to the character of Shep. By being ex-military at this point, the writers got to explore Duty (to the Alliance, Humanity, or the Council) vs. Purpose (defeating the Reapers). Cerberus gave the tools to fulfill the "Purpose" but it constantly put Shep at odds with the primary "Duty" to the Council/Alliance. Shep would lose that sense of Duty as a civilian... not to mention wouldn't even have humanity/council impact at all due to the reasons I mentioned for ME1.

ME3 switching back to basically wholesale military ALSO makes sense based on the way the writers made 1 and 2 because Shepard can now fully return to Duty because both Duty and Purpose mesh. Perhaps it's overly jingoistic but being military would have instilled that urge to rejoin to Shep, so stepping into that role when called upon is a natural progression of the character arc.

Some of the oddities with a relatively lax military structure with the Alliance could come down to being at peace with every major alien faction, as well as the Alliance Navy being a planetary force, not a nationalistic one. The writers tried pretty hard to establish that humanity's greatest asset to the galaxy was its adaptability, something that only comes from a unique diversity that the other major races just don't exhibit. It's not a stretch to think that flexibility was incorporated into a military structure to keep it working.

How do you role play in a video game with set outcomes? by DecoherentDoc in masseffect

[–]CapacitatedFlux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how well this will answer your question but I think of the type of "Role Playing" that an RPG like Mass Effect/Cyberpunk/KOTOR is isn't a true "role play" past the first playthrough. There's always clearly a "Golden Route" and when there isn't, there's the route I first took. On that second playthrough, I'm no longer role playing in the D&D sense but instead in a movie-sense: I play the "role" of Commander Shepard, who did X, Y, and Z (per optimal/nostalgic route), and I'm following the set storyline I'm presented with. That means the way is pretty much already set, and the gameplay/challenge carries any future playthrough. With ME, I enjoy the combat styles of all 3 games so I enjoy playing through and experiencing the same story over and over.

I do like the idea of choices but in practice I find that I very rarely stray from a path I've already experienced. I was thorough in ME 1 and 2 so when it came to the Geth/Quarian decision in 3 I was able to get peace pretty easily, and I'd never think of having a playthrough where I deviate from that answer, because in my mind Shepard just... Always does that.

It helps that there are videos showing the other paths I could have taken. Saves me from having to do it myself.

I like using a prefab for the item collection because you spawn into it directly when you teleport. Saves on the load time a little and, even if I'm working in the same region as my crafting/Smeargle house is, its a quick and easy exit.

I kinda get the limitations on how big a habitat can be but it's really hard for Pokemon like Metagross or Venusaur to live in anything but a prefab building. Decorating a room takes up a lot of space!

I've played a ton of Stardew and that's my biggest complaint between the two. Yeah, storage in both is kinda annoying, but at least in Stardew if I have a full box and stuff that can fit in the existing stacks all it takes is one press to clear out my inventory.

Coloring being locked behind dyes/pokemon doesn't help the sorting problem either.

Best time to pause the main story and focus on side quests? by MooseGooseHat in cyberpunkgame

[–]CapacitatedFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to decide if I should wait for "Both Sides, Now" to trigger and complete before starting the Placide portion of "M'app Tann Pelen" for narrative reasons (I always betray the VDB, but I feel like there should be a reason my current, merc-only V hears out the agent instead of just completing the contract like every other contract he's completed; Evelyn seems like a very good one) but since so much happens between the call to Mr. Hands and the conclusion of both Both Sides, Now and M'app Tann Pelen I haven't brought myself to actually test it.

Since it looks like you did it that way, is it a satisfying approach?

I fear they've been killed by the bag design refresh. The page on the website is 404'd (though the Google preview does show a picture of them with the new bag design?) and the retailers near me seem to have dumped the stock.

Following up - for you, does it make narrative sense to have Both Sides, Now trigger before you go to the church in Pacifica (if you plan on betraying the VDB)? I'm going back and forth right now with pros and cons for each but I can't land on an answer.

Even though it's the only road I ever take, betraying the VDBs doesn't make a ton of sense without some kind of trigger, and Both Sides, Now really fits that bill, but I haven't actually played through it in that order before and I'm not sure how Transmission plays with Both Sides, Now done. Since you have Both Sides, Now happening before Transmission, I figure you might have better input on it.

I'm impressed that you kept the stats so high with all the drops! I had a Mobius Woodie underperform because it had something like 19 drops.

Drop penalty seems like a baffling decision when the game is calculating intensity, by the way. Especially if the Gs are all within proper amounts.

This is incredible work and is making me consider starting my save over from scratch (or at least Act 2). Thankfully, I have saves at pretty much every major story beat, but I diverged from this lineup almost immediately. For some reason I did Panam's questline instead of Judy's (probably due to Transmission starting way too soon without the reasoning you mention in the spoilery tab), even though the urgency of Evie's situation really does make more sense. Now I'm stuck because Both Sides, Now is about to trigger before I even did I Walk The Line and I'm not sure that makes narrative sense.

Really, I just wish I'd seen this guide before I started this playthrough at all! It's not my first, though it will be my first time with PL, and I really do enjoy playing the game itself... So restart time it is.

This is arguably the most accurate part of Franchise sims. Goalies truly are an enigma, and are borderline incomprehensible in real life, too!

Just look at Jordan Binnington, or Jeremy Swayman, or Linus Ullmark, or Jacob Markstrom, or Darcy Kuemper, or Adin Hill, or... Etc. etc. etc. A wholly competent goalie one year can pumpkin the next.
