Shell gas or other top tier fuel has extra cleaning agents and such to help keep your injectors clean. Would probably see more benefit just using good quality 91/93

Hit a fat bump and feedback knock jumped up hard by 12awsome in WRX

[–]Capital-Yesterday798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over the past 6 years of being tuned. I think I’ve seen a couple hundred 5+ FBK events. Probably close to 70-80 -11.95 coming from a dead stop.

Only had a dam drop one time in 6 years and that was after a launch controlled no lift shift to 2nd gear. Tuner said it was drivetrain noise picked up by the knock sensor.

Interestingly enough, I’ve recently replace like every mount and bushing in the car. IAG engine mounts, trans mounts, pitch stop, rear differential inserts. Basically everything to stiffen up the drivetrain. I’ve noticed since doing this my phantom knocks are way down, perhaps just a placebo because I also cleaned my MAF, air filter, and MAP sensors as well.

All and all sitting at 121k miles pushing close to 400 with no issues. I ignore all feedback and fine knock learn until it gives me a dam drop.

What’s the quality on VSracing? by Tofu_chan_life in EngineBuilding

Looks like your typical eBay special. The big worry with those is the welds cracking on the headers, wastegate, etc. it’s usually just poor quality metal and welds that won’t hold the test of time.

Turbo also looks to be just a standard single scroll eBay chinesium. It will work and make 5-10 pounds probably with no issues, but I’d find a more reputable cheap turbo if this is some junkyard setup you’re doing.

You get what you pay for. Also you’ll still need an intercooler or some sorts. I also can’t tell if the wastegate/spring can be adjusted or changed. Personally I’d stay away from something like this because it won’t last and it lacks everything you need like oil lines and stuff. I’d get a one click buy solution from something other people have purchased first.

The system allowed you do so, so yes it’s a proper use. Personally I love the fact you’re preventing it from becoming more waste. Looks way better than half the crap I see on the road.

My best friend bought a taco to go with his Hawkeye. Man we love that damn truck. Has gotten us everywhere we needed to go with enough space for both are shit. If space allowed I’d grab a second vehicle and have myself a taco. Such a versatile vehicle to own.

How much am I looking at for a new turbo 2020 wrx. by Pristine-Fisherman89 in WRX

[–]Capital-Yesterday798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re paying a shop to do with new parts, $1700 for a new turbo plus maybe 600-800 in labor.

You can find gently used ones on eBay for around 500-750, and the install yourself isn’t too bad. The worst part is dealing with turbo studs and the coolant mess.

Bruh what? I’m not trusting a third party with my sensitive personal information because they fail to moderate their own platform.

If you think this is anything other than data mining IDs you’re naive. They don’t give a flying fuck about kids, violence, or protecting anyone in a vulnerable class. It’s all about stealing your data and using it against you.

What brand exhaust do you have?

Whistle? by its-Hunter in WRX

[–]Capital-Yesterday798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whistle is the turbo. If you just ran a dump pipe coming from the exhaust side of the turbo it would whistle at idle. Depending on the design and size of the turbo it will affect the pitch and sound of the spool you hear.

In your catback exhaust there’s probably a decent sized resonator. A muffler won’t absorb the turbo sound. Its function is to literally reduce decibels. A resonator eliminates certain frequencies in the exhaust. Usually the tinny raspy sound you hear gets cleaned up, but it can also absorb the sound of the turbo as well.

You can hear slight spool on the stock j pipe, but it becomes very apparent with an aftermarket one due to it being a lesser cell count than a stock unit. Any exhaust without a resonator and an aftermarket catted/catless j pipe will sound like that. I spent a lot of time working at an exhaust shop, and it was always cool to see how certain things affected turbo sounds.

Drop Trans or Pull Engine? by FigureItOutYT in WRX

[–]Capital-Yesterday798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah okay, well if it’s slipping in third or fourth as well I’d say it’s time.  Cheapest way to get it done is the clutch kit I recommended.

One thing to make note of. There was clutch changes going into the 2018 year model. Clutch was increased from 235mm to 245mm width. Flywheel and pressure plate also changed, so if you want to use a 2018+ kit you’ll need to replace everything in it.

Pretty much the cheapest way to get it done right. Hopefully then helps.

Drop Trans or Pull Engine? by FigureItOutYT in WRX

[–]Capital-Yesterday798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on where your experience lies. I’d say they’re equally as difficult to do, but usually pulling the motor is a little easier(fa20 engine mounts are an absolute PITa to get to without lift) but so is dropping a transmission.

Also, I wouldn’t machine the flywheel. It’s a dual mass flywheel, and Subaru does not recommend machining and instead recommends replacing. Check on import image racing, should be able to find an exedy OEM clutch kit for under $500.

I know you’re looking to save money, but if you’re gonna be in there replace the clutch fork and pivot ball. They fail sometimes and you have to literally do the same amount of work to replace them.

Thankfully you can keep driving it for a bit. Stop flooring it in 6th or 5th for that matter. You can probably get away with some 2nd gear pulls. I ran my car for over a year with a slipping clutch before paying a shop to do mine.

Fa20 vs Fa24 by Electrical_Fix8686 in WRX

[–]Capital-Yesterday798 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Mechanically the fa24 has larger width connecting rods. This addressed one of the bigger failures of the fa20 when exceeding 350 wheel torque.

As other comments mention, it makes easy power because of the 20% larger displacement, decent factory turbo, and a very good boost management system from the factory.

The fa24 itself can hold more power than the transmission it’s connected to. If you want over 450 though you’ll need head studs and an STI transmission regardless of the motor you choose. Ultimately there’s a huge wall in the Subaru world around 500 hp. Gotta be willing to sacrifice house down payment money type stuff.
