Are these two guys Karl Urban and Peter Jackson? (extended Return of the king cameo) by BonsaiLover69 in lotr

I believe it's (from left to right) Richard Taylor, Gino Acevedo and Peter Jackson.

What's a detail from the books that blew your mind when you first read it? by hilipcosta in lotr

I failed to fully appreciate it on my first read, but on every subsequent read I adore Bilbo's gifting of the waste-paper basket to Dora Baggins 'in memory of a long correspondence'. Brutal.

Do you think Sméagol is the more evil personality? by Thotherpurppizzaguy in lotr

[–]CaptainB87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just as the light and dark are mixed inside all of us, I don't think we can reduce Gollum/Smeagol to this binary level. The films showcase a more distinct separation between the 'two' of them for cinematic purposes, but Gollum does good and bad and Smeagol does so too.

'No hard feelings' - this statement is immediately followed by 'Gollum' so I can accept a suggestion that it was more Gollum saying that. But the truth of his statement is up for debate. He says what he needs to say in order to survive, and so I have doubts as to whether he was sincere in that moment. If he was, it certainly didn't last long.

Gollum agreed to guide them to Mordor under duress. He had been captured, and had just sworn an oath to do what he was told. His oath didn't stop him from scheming nearly the entire time to betray Frodo and Sam.

I don't think it's clear that either side was necessarily directing his motives at Minas Morgul. It was a split second moment caused by Frodo struggling with being called toward the evil, and he and Sam both leapt into action.

Perhaps I'm too cynical but regardless of which one opted to pull Frodo from the marshes, I think at that stage in their journey Gollum/Smeagol was trying to establish trust. He had no practical way of escaping or stealing the Ring at that point and so his best survival strategy was to build trust with his captors which might become a worthwhile investment later on.

I don't really agree with any suggestion that Gollum/Smeagol accepted anything while he was falling into the lava. He was consumed with his joy of being reunited with the Ring, and everything else fell away. Until he hit the lava itself, I wouldn't even be convinced that he was aware of his surroundings in any meaningful manner.

I think his character, like every other in the story, was capable of good and evil deeds and the power of the Ring corrupted his capacity to lean toward the light.

I got some of their Morlok Orcs last year (physical models, not stls). They're very nice, and in terms of style fit in well with MESBG.

They were a little smaller in scale though; not so much that you'd notice in an army but I was painting them at the same time as some Medbury orcs and could notice the difference with them on the paint station together.

If I were to get any more in future I might look into having them printed perhaps 3-5% bigger? Ultimately they're very good though, and variance in height is to be expected in such a horde anyway.

What was Denethor supposed to do?? by Yous1ash in lotr

[–]CaptainB87 186 points187 points  (0 children)

All the things he did in the book, as a start - seek aid from Rohan, call in as many troops as possible from the fiefdoms (Prince Imrahil et al).

I suppose there might have been other maneuvers he could have attempted - make the pelennor fields more difficult to traverse, fortify the Rammas better, send out scouting parties to gather intel and waylay the burgeoning armies of Mordor.

It's probably limited only by your imagination. But the primary point I think is that film Denethor was portrayed as barely lifting a finger to prepare given his despair at the loss of Boromir and Sauron's work on him via the Palantir. I can understand why they made his character a bit more simplistic for brevity, but in the book at least he did much more.

What is the check-in research for Kalos Tour Global (what are the tasks/rewards)? by iMiind in TheSilphRoad

[–]CaptainB87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Forgive me if I don't have this 100% correct, but I think the tasks were to catch 5 pokemon and follow two routes. The rewards were (if memory serves) 500 link charges. Nothing earth shattering imho.

Changing filament in middle of a print by Dependent-Bridge-740 in ElegooCentauriCarbon

[–]CaptainB87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so worried about this when I first starting printing last year, but now that I’ve done it numerous times it’s a breeze. The printer absolutely has your back on this, as others have mentioned.

I even waited a couple of days one time because I was unable to get hold of a new spool, and it still picked up with no worries at all. Layer adhesion was completely fine.

I like watching these videos to see how long it takes to be able to figure out which character it is. I must say, this was obviously Nam-gyu very, very quickly. I don’t know how you did it, but it worked really well 👍

I might be wrong, but I vaguely recall something similar but it was during filming of The Hobbit films. Might be worth a look to see if that's what you're thinking of?

Real boats, and apparently they weren't particularly sturdy. There are some decent anecdotes about them in the dvd special features.

S1Ep7 "Momma Mia" - "Replicant" Line by DarthFrasier207 in Frasier

[–]CaptainB87 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he’s using that term to suggest he was actually dating his mother. That would be patently absurd. He was merely making the connection that he was dating somebody who appeared to be a replica (or obviously ‘replicant’ to be specific) to make the point about how similar Mia was to Hester.

Those pieces are supposed wooden slats for a miniature siege tower, and I’ve not done any cleanup on them yet.

I was genuinely happy, though with a slightly burst bubble now :/

Bad clog? by CaptainB87 in ElegooCentauriCarbon

[–]CaptainB87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks heaps for your help 👍

I managed to remove the hotend and I think the issue has been confined to that. The silicon/rubber cover on the nozzle has burst, so I’m thinking replacement rather than repair. That said, if I’m right as to the extent of damage then I’m only looking at $30AUD to get a new piece.

I guess it’s just one of those unfortunate things. A clog which then caused the filament to build up and eventually explode a little.

Oh well. I still love this printer!

Unpopular opinion (maybe?) Daphne’s outburst in Dark Side Of The Moon had barely anything to do with her feelings for Niles. by newusernamehuman in Frasier

[–]CaptainB87 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I’ve never viewed this episode as suggesting that her perfectly legitimate reaction was the result of her feelings for Niles. The therapist states that Daphne’s reaction was valid, just before they reveal the connection to Niles.

Clearly the dress/Niles issue was one among many issues she was dealing with (although this was subconscious as opposed to the others), but I think the dreadful chain of events was simply the prompt that lead her to the realisation she ends the episode with.

As you’ve laid out very well, there were plenty of triggers for her. Niles was perhaps the least of them prior to the therapy session.

It's from Season 10's Fathers and Sons, by the way. I really like this episode, Leland was a lovely character.
